Book excerpt: As a sequel to Dialectics of Force: Ontόbia, this book is dedicated to the progress and force of society—topics that at first glance may seem trite, since mountains of literature are written on this subject. The author, however, having conscientiously presented the views on progress and force of all prominent thinkers over the past and the present chose to follow a distinct path and formulated the criteria of progress based on entirely different scientific paradigms. Moreover, he dared to formulate the two Principles of Social Development, which are akin in their fundamental nature to the first and second laws of thermodynamics. This book is intended for teachers and students of philosophical and social sciences, as well as for all those who are interested in the problems of man and humanity.

Book excerpt: In this book, for the first time in world scientific literature, the category of Force is presented as an attribute of matter alongside motion, space, and time. This has enabled the author to develop a different approach to the Big Bang, to give a new formulation of the border between life and the inorganic world, and to offer his own interpretation in the disputes on the mind–body problem. The category of Ontological Force formulated by the author has allowed him to develop a new definition of the concept of Progress, which creates a methodological basis for fruitful research in the fields of the social sciences and international relations.

The author reveals the contradictions between Russia’s real modern potential and its foreign policy objectives formulated by official Moscow. The author has formulated laws on the Pole, the Center of Power, and Force. Battler introduces some new concepts of the Theory of International Relations: The Foreign Policy Potential of the State and The Law on the Optimal Balance Between the Costs of Domestic and Foreign Policy. On almost all problems raised by the author, his views do not coincide with generally accepted interpretations and approaches. The second extended edition of the book “The Twenty-First Century: The World Without Russia” includes updated copyright and newly added parts and paragraphs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Life Chances, Education and Social Movements' explains the sociology of life chances; the opportunities and experiences of different generations in Australia, the United States and the UK; and how the differential distribution of life-enhancing opportunities affects our well-being. Ralf Dahrendorf’s life-chances theory is used to support the theoretical and empirical arguments in Lyle Munro’s book. For Dahrendorf, education is arguably the most important option individuals can utilise for improving their well-being and for overcoming social and economic disadvantages. While there are countless sociological accounts of inequality, Munro’s study takes a different and novel approach based on Dahrendorf’s model, according to which education and social movements and their networks function to enhance the life chances of individuals and social groups respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 60 years the discipline of human factors (HF) has evolved alongside progress in engineering, technology, and business. Contemporary HF is clearly shifting towards addressing the human-centered design paradigm for much larger and complex societal systems, the effectiveness of which is affected by recent advances in engineering, science, and education. Human Factors of a Global Society: A System of Systems Perspective explores the future challenges and potential contributions of the human factors discipline in the Conceptual Age of human creativity and social responsibility. Written by a team of experts and pioneers, this book examines the human aspects related to contemporary societal developments in science, engineering, and higher education in the context of unprecedented progress in those areas. It also discusses new paradigms for higher education, including education delivery, and administration from a systems of systems perspective. It then examines the future challenges and potential contributions of the human factors discipline. While there are other books that focus on systems engineering or on a specific area of human factors, this book unifies these different perspectives into a holistic point of view. It gives you an understanding of human factors as it relates to the global enterprise system and its newly emerging characteristics such as quality, system complexity, evolving management system and its role in social and behavioral changes. By exploring the human aspects related to actual societal developments in science, the book opens a new horizon for the HF community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In retrospect, Karl Barth conceded that "everything which needs to be said, considered, and believed about God the Father and God the Son . . . might be shown and illuminated in its foundation through God the Holy Spirit." Nevertheless, he refrained from doing so because it was "still too difficult to distinguish between God's Spirit and man's spirit," and so it was--then. However, the late twentieth-century explosion in various disciplines of thought now provides greater discernment between human and divine spirit, a better understanding of the logic of spirit, and the concept and role of spirit in distinction to mind and body. Gorsuch's theological interdisciplinary investigation into the analogia spiritus and a Christian perichoretic relational ontology brings new meaning and coherence to previously difficult scriptures. Moreover, it provides the fundamental landscape for addressing issues of profound theological consequence: (1) redressing the death of transcendence with a new understanding of relational dynamics through which free, temporal, and self-determining human beings might mutually relate with an Eternal God of providence; (2) laying the framework for a viable Christian pluralistic hypothesis in an increasingly pluralistic world; and (3) providing an enriched theological anthropology for addressing human spirit, origins, and theodicy.

Book excerpt: The world's systems of higher education (HE) are caught up in the fourth industrial revolution of the twenty-first century. Driven by increased globalization, demographic expansion in demand for education, new information and communications technology, and changing cost structures influencing societal expectations and control, higher education systems across the globe are adapting to the pressures of this new industrial environment. To make sense of the complex changes in the practices and structures of higher education, this Handbook sets out a theoretical framework to explain what higher education systems are, how they may be compared over time, and why comparisons are important in terms of societal progress in an increasingly interconnected world. Drawing on insights from over 40 leading international scholars and practitioners, the chapters examine the main challenges facing institutions of higher education, how they should be managed in changing conditions, and the societal implications of different approaches to change. Structured around the premise that higher education plays a significant role in ensuring that a society achieves the capacity to adjust itself to change, while at the same time remaining cohesive as a social system, this Handbook explores how current internal and external forces disturb this balance, and how institutions of higher education could, and might, respond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: mile Durkheim is often referred to as the father of sociology. Along with Karl Marx and Max Weber he was a principal architect of modern social science and whose contribution helped established it as an academic discipline. "The Division of Labor in Society," published in 1893, was his first major contribution to the field and arguably one his most important. In this work Durkheim discusses the construction of social order in modern societies, which he argues arises out of two essential forms of solidarity, mechanical and organic. Durkheim further examines how this social order has changed over time from more primitive societies to advanced industrial ones. Unlike Marx, Durkheim does not argue that class conflict is inherent to the modern Capitalistic society. The division of labor is an essential component to the practice of the modern capitalistic system due to the increased economic efficiency that can arise out of specialization; however Durkheim acknowledges that increased specialization does not serve all interests equally well. This important and foundational work is a must read for all students of sociology and economic philosophy.
