From Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland, Boston, and other centres all over the country, the delegations came with full ranks; the husiness sessions were full of interest and the essays and discussions replete with information of practical value; the exhibition hall was spacious and unexcelled for convenience of access, and the number and variety of the exhibits has rarely been equalled; the local hospitalities were among the most lavish ever enjoyed by the Society, the details of the arrangements for the entertainment of the visitors being in competent hands, and altogether the Convention week was one of exceptional pleasure and profit to all the participants. A handsome souvenir publication, compiled by Mr.D. B.Long, of Buffalo, contained descriptions and illustrations of points of interest in and about the city. The Convention headquarters, in the City Convention buildings contained one of the largest and most comprehensive trade exhibitions in the history of the Society. The assembly hall, in which the sessions were held, was profusely decorated with plants and foliage; the walls and columns were wreathed with vines, vases of gladiolus adorned the windows, and the platform presented the appearance of a garden in miniature, being surrounded with cannas, palms and tropical verdure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Fifteenth Annual Convention of the Society of American Florists and Ornamental Horticulturists: Held at Detroit, Michigan, August 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th, 1899 Of course it will require capital to start the business properly to insure its success; and if it cannot be obtained immediately upon the common stock, we would suggest that the more active members of the Society subscribe to a sufficient amount at once to make up the for which they Shall have issued to them preferred stock, drawing interest at the rate of 6 per cent. Per annum, cumulative, the common stockholders reserving the right to cancel the preferred stock at any time upon the payment of principal and interest. Thus the common stockholders will have not only the profit upon their stock, but also a profit upon their purchases, and at the same time enabling them to buy at a less rate than elsewhere on account of the large volume of business which would come to the department, and from the great ex pense saved in obtaining the business; the business to be carried on upon a cash basis, either by pre-payment of cash when sending the order or by cash draft, with bill of lading attached, drawn upon the purchaser. This department to transact business not only with the members of the Society, but with those who are not members; only members of the Society, and the Society itself, holding common stock of the co-operative Department of Purchase shall participate in the profits of their purchases. An accounting of the business shall be made at the end of every six months, and the profits then declared and paid. We wish it understood that we have discovered no new law or principle, and only wish to urge the Society in carrying out what has already been attempted and found to be successful. While not a phenomenal year in any respect, it would seem from the vice-presidents' reports and other sources of in formation from all sections, that a reasonably satisfactory year has been passed. The records of the Secretary's office Show that this has been the Society's experience also. The annual printed volume of the Society's proceedings for the year 1903, a publication of 228 pages, was issued to members in due time and will suffice as a report of our last meeting and 1ts results, and of. The en joyable hours we spent as guests of our indulgent-and generous friends of Milwaukee and Chicago, who proved themselves to be masters of the science of hospitality applied with methodical lavishness unequaled in our experience. The records show that twenty-four certificates Of merit, twenty - eight honorable mentions and nine highly commended diplomas were issued by the judges in the Milwaukee exhibition, and that the gross receipts for space rented to exhibitors were It is also recorded that one hundred and fifty-nine plant introductions had been reported to the secretary's office during the year. This number included twenty-two carnations, four roses, eighty-two Chrysanthemums, six zonal geraniums, three dahlias and forty-two miscellaneous plants. C., August 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th, 1905 The Society, having a charter from the Federal Government, appropriately celebrated its coming to the age of manhood by holding its Twenty-first Annual Meeting at its home, the National Capital. All sections of the country were represented in the convention, business of much importance and interest to the trade was transacted, valuable contributions were made to the literature of the society, and numerous accessions to the membership were reported. The social enjoyment feature, under the auspices of the Florists Club of Washington, was quite prominent; the afternoon of each day being reserved for sight-seeing in the most beautiful city of the country. The weather was delightfully comfortable throughout. The interior of Carroll Hall, where the sessions were held, was decorated with palms, ferns and gladioli. The national colors were conspicuous on the platform. The Trade Exhibition in the adjoining National Rifles Armory and in Masonic Temple exceeded all anticipations in volume and variety, even the overflow space being inadequate to accommodate late arrivals of exhibits. Many new and valuable devices were shown. The convention preliminaries were delayed b-the detention en route of the Chicago and other western delegations. At the opening of the first day's session, in the afternoon, the hall was crowded with representative growers and progressive plantsmen.
