In these accounts Mr. Josselyn made special mention of the successful cultivation in America of Hollyhocks, Gilly Flowers, Sweet Briars and English Roses. From this humble beginning, Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture have made most marvelous strides, and now in 1916 the United States far sur passes any other country ih the total production of glass-grown flowers. This rapid growth has so increased the supply of Decorative Plants, such as Palms, Ferns, etc., that the best of them are Within the reach of people of moderate means. M. Representative florists and horticulturists were present from all sections of the country, some cities, notably Philadelphia, Chicago and Boston, being represented by unprecedentedly large delegations. Many were accompanied by ladies; and, upon the platform, in addition to the officers of the Society and officials of the City Government, were ex-Presidents Smith, Dean and Craig. Address of Welcome. President Patrick O'Mara, of the New York Florists' Club, welcomed the Society as follows: A year ago, at Detroit, the New York Florists' Club invited you to hold your annual session in the City of New York. We promised you at that time that we would do our best to make it pleasant for you during your stay here, that we would try to show you as good a horticultural exhibit as was capable of being produced here, that we would do everything possible for your comfort, and I am glad to say the New York Florists' Club has up to the present time carried out the promises made there at that time. We welcome you heartily and unstintedly. We trust that during your stay with us you will enjoy yourselves so that when you go back to your homes you will feel rejuvenated, as it were, and that your interest in horticulture will be increased ten-fold. I am satisfied that the community of New York will be benefited by your presence, by the exhibition which has been made here and by everything in connection with the convention. Mr. O'Mara added that the opening of the convention at an earlier hour than customary was because the Acting Mayor was obliged to leave in order to keep a very important engagement. He said he mentioned this fact to explain why the attendance at this time was not as large as it would be later and also as an explanation of the brevity of his own remarks, as he had intended to inflict a longer speech upon the audience but they had very happily escaped it. The business meetings, the trade display and the various recreative features fully realized expectations. Absenteeism at the World's Fair was not noticeable, and under the excellent arrangement made by the Executive Committee for forenoon sessions the program each day was completed in time for visits to the Exposition grounds. The weather was seasonable, and apprehensions of semi-tropical heat at St. Louis in mid-summer were not realized. The generous hospitality of the St. Louis Florists' Club was manifested constantly, and its members were untiring in their efforts to promote the comfort and convenience of their guests. The Convention headquarters were at the Exposition Building in the business section of the city, on Olive street, where ample facilities were furnished for both Convention and Exhibition purposes. The entire floor-space of the Exhibition Hall was covered with the trade display, the exhibits being fully as large and elaborate as in any previous year and including many new and attractive specialties. The Convention Hall was handsomely decorated with palms, oak branches, cannas and other flowers. The national colors were conspicuous above and around the platform, and the fronts of the balconies were gaudy with bunting. The Convention headquarters, in the City Convention buildings contained one of the largest and most comprehensive trade exhibitions in the history of the Society. The assembly hall, in which the sessions were held, was profusely decorated with plants and foliage; the walls and columns were wreathed with vines, vases of gladiolus adorned the windows, and the platform presented the appearance of a garden in miniature, being surrounded with cannas, palms and tropical verdure. The interior of the Convention headquarters, in the First Congregational Church, was beautifully adorned with groups of decorative plants. The sessions were held in the main auditorium, and the adjoining church parlors were utilized, at intervals, for committee meetings and clerical work. The trade exhibition was located in the basement, and every available foot of space was occupied by the various exhibits. The preliminaries to the formal business of the Convention were opened at 10.30 a.m. by Vice-President A. Donaghue, Sr., who was also chairman of the Reception Committee of the Nebraska and Iowa Florists Society. After organ music, prayer was offered by Rev. Thomas J.Mack.w, of Omaha. In his invocation, he prayed for the sunlight of the Divine love upon those who improve the beautiful plants and flowers of Gods creation, that their hearts may blossom and expand toward each other and that they themselves may improve and grow to the stature of perfect men. A Welcome To Omaha And A Reseonse. Hon. Frank E. Moores, Mayor of the city of Omaha, being introduced, cordially welcomed the Convention to Omaha in an eloquent and humorous speech, which was much applauded.
