Les multiples problèmes qu’il pose a conduit les responsables de cette entreprise à l’accompagner de rencontres internationales pluridisciplinaires. Ce sont les résultats des journées tenues à Lille – les deuxièmes du genre – qui font l’objet du présent volume, au fait des derniers développements de la recherche. Il s’ouvre par un ensemble de six contributions offrant de nouvelles réflexions sur la question cruciale des conditions dans lesquelles ce recueil a été élaboré, réalisé, publié et diffusé. Scrutant avec soin les pratiques de gouvernement, les politiques de maintien de l’ordre, l’organisation de l’administration et l’action de l’État, les neuf contributions de la deuxième partie bousculent un certain nombre d’idées reçues sur le fonctionnement de l’Empire tardif. Quant aux contributions de la troisième partie, au nombre de neuf également, elles renouvellent la lecture de diverses lois relatives d’une part à la fiscalité, à l’économie et à l’approvisionnement de Rome, d’autre part au personnel des mines, aux esclaves et aux femmes.

Scholarship in early Christianity has for centuries viewed Roman emperors’ slaves and freedmen as responsible for ushering Christianity onto the world stage, traditionally using Paul’s allusion to “the saints from Caesar’s household” in Philippians 4:22 as a core literary lens. Merging textual and material evidence with diaspora and memory studies, Flexsenhar expands on this narrative to explore new and more nuanced representations of this group, showing how the long-accepted stories of Christian slaves and freepersons in Caesar’s household should not be taken at face value but should instead be understood within the context of Christian myth- and meaning-making. Flexsenhar analyzes textual and material evidence from the first to the sixth century, spanning Roman Asia, the Aegean rim, Gaul, and the coast of North Africa as well as the imperial capital itself. A first section looks at more general aspects of early Christianity: the name of the Christians, their religious and social capital, prophecy and the place of widows and upper-class women in the Christian movement. Second, the chronology and place of composition of the early apocryphal Acts of the Apostles and Pseudo-Clementines are newly determined by paying close attention to their doctrinal contents, but also, innovatively, to their onomastics and social vocabulary.
