Book excerpt: This book offers an analysis of social security in Ireland from 1981 to 2016 - a period of immense economic and social change during which social provisions such as pensions and family benefits were downsized or diluted in many countries. It considers whether this important area of welfare state provision in Ireland changed, and the extent and pattern of change. In the first in-depth account of this aspect of social policy In Ireland, the book sets the welfare state in a historical and comparative context and reviews the impact of globalisation, politics and the financial crash on the scope and generosity of social security. The book will be of particular interest to scholars of welfare state politics and comparative social policy as well as to students of Irish social policy.

Download or read book Social Security written by Danny Pieters and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody uses the term social security, but definitions vary widely. This unique book may be conceived as a wide-ranging definition, although in fact it emphasizes only part of the concept: that administrative function that grants cash benefits to offset or compensate for such social risks as old age, disability, unemployment, costs of health care, and other instances occasioning the lack of means necessary for a decent existence. In an earlier form (1993), this book proved itself as a much-sought-after introduction to the field, for governments as much as for law students. In this completely revised and updated work, Professor Pieters again offers, this time to a new generation of scholars and policymakers, a common language and structure with which to talk and think about social security. The presentation is both abstract (theory of social security) and concise (structure of social security systems). In taking into account the diversity of ways in which social security has been shaped by priorities of place and time, Dr Pieters delineates the distinct alternatives that can be adhered to in establishing a social security system. He builds a frame in which these various concepts, principles, options, and techniques can be put into perspective. Although this approach hints at a common law of social security, Dr Pieters goes no further in that direction than a brief general survey (in his last chapter) of the possible features of a comparative social security law. Social Security: An Introduction to the Basic Principles is sure to find a welcome among many sectors of the legal and policy communities. Full of insight and information, and eminently readable, the book may be seen in a number of different ways: as a road map explaining the social security systems of various states; as an overview of the various options available for building a social security system; as an exploration of the possibilities of rethinking or reforming an existing system; as the first tentative step toward a scientific discipline of comparative social security law; and much else besides.

Book Synopsis Social Security in Ireland, 1939-1952 by : Sophia Carey
Download or read book Social Security in Ireland, 1939-1952 written by Sophia Carey and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the factors which have shaped the Irish welfare state, through a case study of social security development between 1939 and 1952. At the heart of contemporary debates about the influences shaping welfare state outcomes lie the concepts of industrialisation, modernisation, religion, and patterns of state-formation. The Irish case provides a unique insight into these debates. Ireland is a European welfare state, but one in which colonial legacies are paramount. It is a modern, but late-industrialising nation, and for much of the modern period, Catholicism has been unusually influential. The book looks at how these idiosyncratic Irish experiences shaped a distinctive welfare state, and considers what this tells us about contemporary theoretical perspectives on social policy. This account of the behind the scenes battles over social security, tells us a great deal about how the welfare state in Ireland took the shape it did, and in the process, raises questions about well-established accounts of the role of the Church, political parties, and interest groups in shaping distributive outcomes which would persist for many decades.
