Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews form only a tiny proportion of the Australian population, yet they have made outstanding contributions and have influenced Australian society immeasurably. Stories such as that of Sir John Monash, Australian commander-in-chief during World War I, whose legacy continues through Monash University, show how Jews have reached the highest echelons of Australian society. The Jews in Australia explores what makes the Australian Jewish community different from other Jewish communities around the world. It traces the community's history from its convict origins in 1788 through to today's vibrant Jewish culture in Australia, and highlights the social and cultural impact the Jews have had on Australia. As well as looking at the emergence of a specific faith tradition in Australia, the book also explores how Jews, as Australia's first ethnic group, have integrated into multicultural Australia.

Suzanne Rutland charts this community's history from its convict origins through the turmoil of the twentieth century which saw numerous waves of Jewish immigrants reach Australia's shores. Jews fleeing Nazism arrived in the thirties. They were followed by survivors of the Holocaust and then by refugees from Hungarian Communism in the fifties. More recent waves have brought Soviet and South African Jews. Edge of the Diaspora documents the story of this vibrant community that has integrated but maintained its Jewish identity.

Book excerpt: Australian reluctance to accept Jewish refugees before and during World War II was connected to traditional immigration policies intended to ensure a "White Australia" and barring "genetically undesirable races." Traces the history of cultural and intellectual antisemitism in Australia, often originating in Britain, and of Social Darwinist and right-wing nationalist ideas and their influence on immigration policies before and after 1933. Unemployment caused by the depression (and often blamed on Jewish financial machinations) aroused fears of being swamped by hordes of Jewish refugees. The official Jewish community acquiesced in these fears. As a result, only 7500 refugees reached Australia before 1941. Even after the war, the public and press opposed entry of Jewish refugees.

From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia entered the Great War of 191418 on the coattails of her imperial mother, Great Britain. Some 420,000 of her citizens fought in the islands off New Guinea, Gallipoli, the Western Front, and the Middle East. Among them was a relatively large chunk of the countrys small Jewish population. The precise number remains unknown since many enlisted as Christians. The Jewish story of World War I is far more complex than the current communal narrative, monopolised, as it is, by the superb military leadership of General Sir John Monash, and the avowals of passionate loyalty of Australian Jewry to king, country, and empire. It is claimed that this was manifest in its relatively large enlistment and war effort on the home front. At all times, an edgy Anglo-Australian Jewish leadership was looking over its shoulder worried by possible accusations of disloyalty. The sketchy account of the Australian-Jewish involvement in World War I is due to a lack of evidence from that era and little enthusiasm for collecting whatever was available subsequently. Much of what does exist lacks a grassroots Jewish voice, except for a few diaries and letters. Nonetheless, it is most likely that the capacity of Jewish communal leaders to influence the average Australian Jews attitude to enlistment or home front activities was minimal. One matter is certain, and that is that a strong belief in social integration helped prevent the formation of any communal organisation to care for ill and wounded Jewish veterans.
