Book Synopsis More Than Medicine by : LaTonya J. Trotter
Download or read book More Than Medicine written by LaTonya J. Trotter and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In More Than Medicine, LaTonya J. Trotter chronicles the everyday work of a group of nurse practitioners (NPs) working on the front lines of the American health care crisis as they cared for four hundred African American older adults living with poor health and limited means. Trotter describes how these NPs practiced an inclusive form of care work that addressed medical, social, and organizational problems that often accompany poverty. In solving this expanded terrain of problems from inside the clinic, these NPs were not only solving a broader set of concerns for their patients; they became a professional solution for managing "difficult people" for both their employer and the state. Through More Than Medicine, we discover that the problems found in the NP's exam room are as much a product of our nation's disinvestment in social problems as of physician scarcity or rising costs.
Book Synopsis Asperger Syndrome by : Viktoria Lyons
Download or read book Asperger Syndrome written by Viktoria Lyons and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Kinsey, world famous American sexologist whose life is portrayed in the 2005 movie Kinsey had it. Stanley Kubrick, one of the most important and influential filmmakers of the last century and director of cinematic masterpieces such as Clockwork Orange, Lolita, and 2001 - Space Odyssey, fits the diagnosis. Undoubtedly, Patricia Highsmith, renowned writer of crime fiction, particularly the Ripley novels suffered from it. Likewise, Charles Darwin, one of the most influential and revolutionary scientist of all times as well as Bertrand Russell, foremost philosopher and mathematician of the 20th century meet diagnostic criteria for Asperger syndrome. Other less well known personalities such as the Swiss writer Robert Walser, Joy Adamson famous for her work with animals in Africa, the controversial British politician Enoch Powell, the gifted mathematician Kurt Godel and the American child prodigy William James Sidis are also linked to the condition. Asperger syndrome is a neuropsychiatric condition, a lifelong and pervasive developmental disorder, which sometimes is associated with high intelligence and creativity. very little emphasis on special strengths or talents. Some individuals with Asperger Syndrome are extremely successful in their area of expertise and lead fulfilling lives despite or because of their condition while others are considered failures and life for them is an endless struggle on the margins of society. For some, Asperger syndrome appears to be a gift, for others a curse. In order to address this issue, the authors analyse the life histories of ten historical and contemporary figures from the world of literature, film, politics, science, philosophy and mathematics who had Asperger syndrome, against the backdrop of neuropsychological theories of autism/Asperger syndrome, latest neurobiological research data and current interpretation of special gifts and assets. They also advance a new hypothesis of Asperger syndrome as a disorder of the social self based on right hemisphere dysfunction, and demonstrate that the impact of the disorder on the development of the Self of each individual manifests itself in very distinct ways.
Book Synopsis Sourcebook of the World's Religions by : Joel Diederik Beversluis
Download or read book Sourcebook of the World's Religions written by Joel Diederik Beversluis and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2000 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes small portraits of all the major religious traditions by scholars in each field, as well as essays on spiritual philosophies such as Wicca, theosophy, and indigenous religions by various adherents. The book is divided into four sections: major world religions, spiritualisms, and philosophies; interfaith dialogue; creating a peaceful, inclusive, just world; and a very large resource guide with various directories of on- and off-line religious sites. Under the third section, on creating a peaceful world, for example, one may find "The Jain Declaration on Nature," wherein it is written that one of Gandhi's most treasured friends was a Jain, Shrimad Rajchandra, who influenced the Mahatma with a central Jain tenet, ahimsa, or nonviolence. The section on the Unification Church, another example, is absent all mention of the different phases and kinds of Moon's troubles, attempting only to give an objective portrait of the religion's tenets. This uncontentious, unconditionally loving compendium came out of a 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Download or read book Framing Fat written by Samantha Kwan and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to public health officials, obesity poses significant health risks and has become a modern-day epidemic. A closer look at this so-called epidemic, however, suggests that there are multiple perspectives on the fat body, not all of which view obesity as a health hazard. Alongside public health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are advertisers of the fashion-beauty complex, food industry advocates at the Center for Consumer Freedom, and activists at the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. Framing Fat takes a bird’s-eye view of how these multiple actors construct the fat body by identifying the messages these groups put forth, particularly where issues of beauty, health, choice and responsibility, and social justice are concerned. Samantha Kwan and Jennifer Graves examine how laypersons respond to these conflicting messages and illustrate the gendered, raced, and classed implications within them. In doing so, they shed light on how dominant ideas about body fat have led to the moral indictment of body nonconformists, essentially “framing” them for their fat bodies.
Book Synopsis Issues in the Psychology of Women by : Maryka Biaggio
Download or read book Issues in the Psychology of Women written by Maryka Biaggio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years, I (MB) have taught a graduate-level course in Psychology of Women to students in two different professional psychology programs. Because my students were at the doctoral level and often had some familiarity with the psychology of women, these courses focused on bringing a feminist analysis of psychology and integrating a feminist analysis into one’s scholarly work and professional activities. Although I used several fine psychology of women textbooks during this time, I found none that was specifically designed for graduate students. Thus, I always augmented the textbook with journal articles on specific aspects of the topic, and these focused articles have typically been well received by the students. The s- dents whom I have encountered in these courses have often expressed a wish for a textbook that is designed for their needs; I think what they are asking for is one that could serve as a foundation for their scholarly analysis of psychology as well as a springboard for thoughtful application of a feminist perspective to the profession of psychology. Therefore, Issues in the Psychology of Women has been designed to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses including Psychology of Women or Feminist Analysis of Psychology. This book is the collective work of authors with special expertise in their chapter topic.
