Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains several articles by experts in the fields of special education and psychology. Each article explores the issues, theories, and practices of assessing problem behavior and determining how to use this information. Together, the articles of this text present current advances in the use of functional assessment technology: taking the techniques and strategies of traditional functional analysis and using this information to construct clinical interventions. Three sections focus on the following topics: how functional assessment can be used to intervene effectively and change problem behavior, common procedures for using functional assessment in the preschool and school classroom, and new directions and trends in the field of functional assessment. A thorough and well-researched base of knowledge on problem behavior is provided, and the student learns the many ways in which this behavior may be diagnosed, intervened, and ideally changed.

Book excerpt: This is the best account of social behavior from a functional behavioral point of view. Well reasoned yet daring in scope, this text is used around the world. Analyzing Social Behavior provides the first full coverage of the social sciences from the perspective of modern behavior theory. The book provides an up-to-date introduction to behavior analysis and an analysis of a broad range of human social behaviors, using research from psychology, anthropology, sociolinguistics, and sociology. The book demonstrates why most individualistic concepts of psychology- such as the self, thinking, and grammar-are inherently social events. While the special properties of verbal communities that maintain such behaviors are unique and delineate the social sciences, this book shows that these properties can be understood from a natural sciences perspective.

Book excerpt: As the cornerstone of applied behavior analysis, functional assessment is supported by a burgeoning literature that focuses on identification of and interventions for aggressive, self-injurious, and other challenging behaviors. Although the number of research studies continues to grow, full-length volumes on using functional assessment to address these behaviors remain few and far between. Comprehensive in coverage, Functional Assessment for Challenging Behaviors expands the knowledge base by providing information on all aspects of its topic. This unique volume addresses basic questions in salient detail, from types and rates of challenging behaviors to populations that warrant functional assessment. In addition, it examines typical assessment techniques, including interview, scaling, experimental, and in vivo methods. The use of functional assessment in treatment planning – and in combination with other interventions – is covered in depth. An especially timely chapter identifies key ethical and legal concerns in working with challenging behavior populations. Coverage includes: The history of behavior analysis and functional assessment. The nature, prevalence, and characteristics of challenging behaviors. Interview and observation methods in functional assessment and analysis. Experimental functional analysis for challenging behaviors. Treatment methods commonly used with functional assessment. Using functional assessment in treatment planning. Functional Assessment for Challenging Behaviors is an essential resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in clinical child and school psychology, pediatric psychiatry and medicine, social work, rehabilitation, and developmental psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My interest in nonverbal behavior has remained constant for over 15 years. I think this has been the case because nonverbal behavior has proved a very fascinating and challenging topic. Others might suggest that I am just a slow learner. With enough time in any area, however, one begins to feel that he or she has some special insights to offer to others. About the time that I was struck with that thought, approximately two and a half years ago, I was developing the first version of my sequential functional model of nonverbal exchange. It seemed to me that the func tional model might provide a very useful framework for a book discussing and analyzing nonverbal behavior. I did not want (nor do I think I had the patience) to write a comprehensive review of research on nonverbal behavior. Other works, such as Siegman and Feldstein's (1978) edited Nonverbal Behavior and Commu nication, and Harper, Wiens, and Matarazzo's (1978) Nonverbal Communication: The State of the Art, have provided excellent reviews of the research on nonverbal behavior. Instead, what I have tried to do in this book is to use nonverbal behavior as a vehicle for discussing social behavior. In a very real sense, this analysis of nonverbal behavior is a means to an end, not an end in itself. A consequence of this approach is that this review is a selective one, unlike the comprehensive works mentioned earlier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional behavioral analysis makes it possible to better understand the symptoms of psychotherapy patients and counseling clients and to develop appropriate help options. Not only observable behaviors are taken into account, but also internal processes such as cognitions, feelings and the violation of basic psychological needs. In this volume, the method of functional behavior analysis is explained step by step so that readers can apply it themselves. It also shows how psychotherapies and psychosocial counseling processes can be planned on this basis. The functional analysis of human behavior helps to tailor case planning to the individual. This applies to almost every problem that professional helpers are confronted with in counseling and therapy. This Springer essential is a translation of the original German 1st edition essentials, Die Funktionale Verhaltensanalyse by Michael Borg-Laufs, published by Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden GmbH, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically different from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.
