Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you hear the words "in the original text it says" or "in the original text this means," it's time to be wary. Those words often provide the introduction to misleading information. But how can the hearer discern just what is correct and what is misleading? How can pastors avoid giving their congregations misleading information? "In the Original Text It Says" takes a look at word-study fallacies and how you can avoid them. Author Ben Baxter gives an introduction to word meaning and how word meaning differs between languages. He then examines a series of fallacies, errors that people make in assigning meaning to words in the original languages of the Bible. But he doesn't leave it with that theoretical examination. After providing the basis for how to understand Biblical words, he examines the discussion of specific words and phrases from passages in both the Old Testament and the New. He takes these examples from commentaries commonly used by pastors and teachers in sermon and lesson preparation. With each example, he shows how one might misunderstand the linguistic evidence provided, and also how one can properly apply this information. This book is designed for readers who have had some contact with Greek or Hebrew, but will also be useful to those who have more language skill, but may not have studied linguistics or looked carefully at how to apply their knowledge in teaching.

Book excerpt: Jack Larson after loosing his wife of 35 years, hopes to find peace in the remote area of northern Wisconsin, but instead finds himself involved in a conflict with the winter snowmobile recreational tourist industry. He is harassed by a local snowmobile gang; who damage his property and eventually kill his dog. Jack finds he cannot contain his outrage after the death of his dog and sets out on a one man mission to get revenge on the gang and those that are connected with snowmobiling. It becomes a personal war. As he proceeds he comes into conflict with the town's only detective that is out to preserve his way of life and that of the town's. What happens next are a series of events that leads Jack Larson down a path to the final conflict with no way out. What makes matters worse for Jack is that he has fallen in love with someone new and is caught between his love for her and his own personal need for revenge. Michael Putzer is 63 years old and has been married to his wife Donna for 42 years. He has lived his entire life in Wisconsin with the exception of a two years stay in the U.S. Army in the late sixties. Since his retirement in 2002 from the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, they have lived in their home on forty acres of land outside of Hurley, Wisconsin. They have two grown up married children and a Chinese Shar-pei dog named China. During the author's 33 years with Kimberly-Clark he worked in consumer products Research. Much of that time was spent in the international products which resulted in travel to the Far East, Latin America and Europe. A Winter's Rage is his first book. It has always been his ambition to write a novel, but over the years with work there had never been enough time to complete the task. Once retired there was the time available. While the author is not a hunter or a fisherman, he considers himself an environmentalist. Both he and his wife enjoy the outdoors, hiking in the summer and snow shoeing in the winter. They have a great appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors and the land. Their favorite time of the year is winter looking forward to the abundance of snow that this area receives. They do not snowmobile.

Book excerpt: In Tales from a Snowbank, you will read about the challenges of surviving in a sub-arctic community, such as walking home from school with the fear of turning a corner and coming face-to-face with a big white bear. This is an autobiographical collection documenting the author’s growth to adulthood in a small but significant Canadian community: Churchill, Manitoba. The work details his unique life and times, with humour and tenderness, and examines how the community and the author’s life experiences were instrumental in shaping him. The book provides a wonderful glimpse back in time, as each chapter touches on different adventures in different decades, from illicit pool hall escapades in the 1950s, to meeting a pretty nurse in the 1960s. The book closes with the author’s return to Churchill with his new wife to visit his parents during the Christmas of 1970. This work shows readers a part of the world and a way of life very few have experienced, describing elements of the North, such as the polar bears, belugas, and seals; living in isolation and loneliness; the beauty of Hudson Bay, and the northern lights; and the warmth of community. The book will appeal to readers around the world who appreciate nostalgia, history, or biographies, as well as those interested in understanding what the North has to offer, and the deep historical ties Churchill has with the rest of Canada.

Book excerpt: After the sudden death of his wife, Zoi, in a car accident, Chris Stevenson finds himself traveling from North Memphis, Tennessee, with his two baby girls--one eleven and a half months old, and one fifteen days--old trying to outrun a snowstorm back to Georgia where he was from. The baby was a four-pound-four-ounce preemie. There were wrecks on the interstate everywhere. He needed to get to Gran Nelsons. He needed her love, strength, wisdom, and help. After two days on the road, he was almost to Ellijay. His goal was to get to Blue Ridge. He had realized that wasn't happening tonight. His aunt Nora was holding a room for him at her Inn in Ellijay. He was a mile or so away, and as he rounded a curve, there was a car off the road in a snowbank with a woman passed out on the steering wheel. There had been no other cars on the road since Chatsworth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Periglacial Environment, Fourth Edition, is an authoritative overview of the world’s cold, non-glacial environments. First published in 1976 and subsequently revised in 1996 and 2007, the text has been the international standard for nearly 40 years. The Fourth Edition continues to be a personal interpretation of the frost-induced conditions, geomorphic processes and landforms that characterize periglacial environments. Part One discusses the periglacial concept and describes the typical climates and ecosystems that are involved. Part Two describes the geocryology (permafrost science) associated with frozen ground. Part Three outlines the weathering and geomorphic processes associated with cold-climate conditions. Part Four provides insight into the periglacial environments of the Quaternary, especially the Late Pleistocene. Part Five describes some of the problems associated with human occupancy in regions that experience frozen ground and cold-climate conditions. Extensively revised and updated Written by an expert with over 50 years of field research Draws upon the author’s personal experience from Northern Canada, Alaska, Siberia, Tibet, Antarctica, Svalbard, Scandinavia, southern South America, Western Europe and eastern North America This book is an invaluable reference for advanced undergraduates in geography, geology, earth sciences and environmental sciences programs, and to resource managers and geotechnical engineers interested in cold regions.
