Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evolution of snapshot photography from Victorian times to the digital age. The arrival of the first snapshot camera in Victorian times bred a new kind of photographer, one who might never before have thought of owning a camera, but for whom the ability to take pictures without any previous experience offered a new liberation. The way snapshot cameras and the pictures they took evolved through the following years and into today’s digital age is what this book is all about. With more than 200 mono pictures and sixteen pages of color, it examines how different types of snapshot camera opened up opportunities to shoot new kinds of picture; reveals the dubious way in which snapshot photographers were once perceived; shows how to identify where and when certain snapshots were taken; looks at the role of professional snapshot photographers; examines the part snapshots have played in social history; and explains why yesterday’s snapshots are still so important today.

Book excerpt: Snapshots Behind the Façade is an absorbing collection of observations, many of them profound, on various facets of life on planet Earth. In essence, the author takes a broad look at the fabricated social environment that we humans have created for ourselves and he highlights the curious and nonsensical nature of much of our surroundings. The critique of the war on Iraq will be of special interest to those looking for a definitive explanation of what that war is all about. The author also offers conclusions about the fundamental nature of matters of the ultimate importance: life, death, religion, and the future. After reading this engaging and entertaining book, you may look at a lot of things a lot differently.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snapshots and Short Notes examines the photographic postcards exchanged during the first half of the twentieth century as illustrated, first-hand accounts of American life. Almost immediately after the introduction of the generic postcard at the turn of the century, innovations in small, accessible cameras added black and white photographs to the cards. The resulting combination of image and text emerged as a communication device tantamount to social media today. Postcard messages and photographs tell the stories of ordinary lives during a time of far-reaching technological, demographic, and social changes: a family’s new combine harvester that could cut 40 acres a day; a young woman trying to find work in a man’s world; the sight of an airplane in flight. However, postcards also chronicled and shared hardship and tragedy––the glaring reality of homesteading on the High Plains, natural disasters, preparations for war, and the struggles for racial and gender equality. With a meticulous eye for detail, painstaking research, and astute commentary, Wilson surveys more than 160 photographic postcards, reproduced in full color, that provide insights into every aspect of life in a time not far removed from our own.

Book excerpt: Richard Leonards Snapshots in Prose is a collectors album of evocative tales about Jamie Lachlans coming of age in mid-20th-century New York when the city was the world of neighborhood movie palaces and black-and-white television, old people leaning on windowsills above and children playing on streets below, and teenagers sitting on stoops and car fenders, listening to rock and roll on transistor radios. Growing up on the East Side of Manhattan, Jamie was a daycare runaway and bullied first-grade brawler, Saturday morning movie cowboy and World War II warrior, Central Park rowboat pirate and traffic-stopping horseback rider When Jamie was a teenager, he was a fire-escape gymnast and condemned-building explorer, Holy Ghost slow dancer and Chubby Checker twister, redeemed classroom daydreamer and infamous catechism sinner And in 1965, nineteen-year-old Jamie Lachlan went steady with eighteen-year-old Maddy Ferrara and fell in love.

I also realised that I had never asked my grandmother about her early life which I now understand must have been extremely interesting. In order to explain the photographs and give my granddaughters some small insight into what the world was like in the middle of the Twentieth Century, I have written down some of my memories, illustrated with the old snapshots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Soldier Snapshots Jay Mechling explores how American men socially construct their performance of masculinity in everyday life in all-male friendship groups during their service in the military. The evidence Mechling analyzes is a collection of vernacular photographs, “snapshots,” of and by American soldiers, sailors, Marines, and aviators. Since almost all of the snapshots are photographs taken of men by other men, this book offers a unique view into the social construction, performance, and repair of American masculinity. Mechling guides the reader from the snapshots to ideas about the everyday lives of male soldiers to ideas about the lives of men in groups to ideas about American culture. In his introduction Mechling offers his thoughts about how to undertake the interdisciplinary study of American culture; he draws from history, folklore, anthropology, sociology, rhetoric, psychology, gender and sexuality studies, ethnic studies, popular culture studies, and visual studies to reveal the intricacies of how men use their folk practices in an all-male group to manage the paradoxes of their friendship and comradeship under sometimes stressful conditions. Soldier Snapshots begins with a brief history of war photography and establishes the nature of vernacular photography: the snapshot. This is followed by a jargon-free discussion of the key ideas about masculinity and the vernacular practices of men in groups, exploring male friendship, the important role of play in men’s relationships, and the ways “animal buddies” adopted by male friendship groups actually tell us even more about male friendship and issues of trust. In the final section Mechling’s careful analysis reveals how the men employ different folk practices—including rough-and-tumble playfighting, building human pyramids, bathing naked in public, cross-dressing, hazing, and gallows humor—in order to manage their relationships. Regardless of the man’s sexual orientation and sexual identity, the strong heterosexual norm in the military means that the men must find ways to understand and even enact or perform their feelings of bonding while still defining those feelings and acts as heterosexual.
