Book excerpt: Three women, formerly strangers, born in three different decades with little in common are bonded together forever by their ongoing pursuit of punishment for one of America's most ruthless serial rapist/murderers. They vow to be the voices for those who cannot speak: more than two hundred women brutally attacked and ten savagely beaten, raped and murdered. Smoldering Embers is not only a bone-chilling thriller, but a shattering indictment of the American Criminal Justice System and its treatment of the very victims it has sworn to protect. Ultimately, though, it is also the inspiring story of the power that crime victims can wield if they work together in pursuit of justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I intend to stand firm and let the peacocks multiply, for I am sure that, in the end, the last word will be theirs.” —Flannery O’Connor When she was young, the writer Flannery O’Connor was captivated by the chickens in her yard. She’d watch their wings flap, their beaks peck, and their eyes glint. At age six, her life was forever changed when she and a chicken she had been training to walk forwards and backwards were featured in the Pathé News, and she realized that people want to see what is odd and strange in life. But while she loved birds of all varieties and kept several species around the house, it was the peacocks that came to dominate her life. Written by Amy Alznauer with devotional attention to all things odd and illustrated in radiant paint by Ping Zhu, The Strange Birds of Flannery O’Connor explores the beginnings of one author’s lifelong obsession. Amy Alznauer lives in Chicago with her husband, two children, a dog, a parakeet, sometimes chicks, and a part-time fish, but, as of today, no elephants or peacocks. Ping Zhu is a freelance illustrator who has worked with clients big and small, won some awards based on the work she did for aforementioned clients, attracted new clients with shiny awards, and is hoping to maintain her livelihood in Brooklyn by repeating that cycle.

His work expresses a strong element of social criticism–sometimes angry, sometimes ironic or absurd, with the element of the highly personal and lyrical. One of his greatest strengths is the effective use of telling details and powerful images and metaphors to bring us face to face with our foibles, our failures and our loves- David Lunde Professor Emeritus SUNY Fredonia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the events of May 1968 to the Arab Spring and Occupy, we have seen social movements develop spontaneously around the globe propelling thousands and, at times, millions of people into the streets to demand an end to oppression. "In order to make sense of such events, the authors draw on George Katsiaficas's conception of the 'eros effect,' which picks up and takes off from concepts developed by Herbert Marcuse. This effect describes moments in which the instinctual human need for justice and freedom undergoes a massive spontaneous awakening. Drawing on Marcuse, the concept foregrounds the instinctual foundation of the desire for freedom, in which a biologically-based pleasure drive—eros—is given free play." — from the Foreword by Peter Marcuse However, even as the eros effect provides a valuable framework for understanding spontaneous global uprisings, Katsiaficas has acknowledged that the concept has remained underdeveloped. Spontaneous Combustion provides an introduction to the eros effect along with a series of elaborations, applications, and critical rejoinders concerning its implications. A truly interdisciplinary venture, the book features contributions from cutting-edge scholars and activists on the frontlines of today's struggles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Southern brigadier generals during the Revolutionary War remain largely forgotten or untold, but their experiences were unique. During the war, 13 of the 58 brigadier generals (the lowest-ranking generals) who served under George Washington died because of combat wounds or under British captivity. Seven of those 13 hailed from the southernmost and (excepting Virginia) less populated colonies. Proportionally, they were more likely to become casualties or prisoners than were their Northern counterparts, and they were far more likely than were the more senior major generals (only one of whom died during the war, out of 28 total officers). This book profiles the 18 Southern brigadier generals and their service during the American Revolution. It makes the case that Washington and his brigadier generals, especially the Southern brigadiers, won the war in spite of the major generals, many of whom exhibited cowardice, alcoholism, insubordination, womanizing, or ineffective leadership; more than half of the major generals were effectively cashiered or voluntarily left military service long before Yorktown and the war's conclusion. The author demonstrates that, as much as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and other politicians, the war's brigadier generals should be viewed as founding fathers, too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radical Neo-Enlightenment is a spirited response to the multiple and accelerating crises we face today. The provocative and ambitious work contends that we require a “radical neo-Enlightenment” to counter these systemic crises. The driving idea is that Reason must now be reclaimed as a powerful force for positive social change. Along the way, the book criticizes philosophy’s failings and restores its noble compulsion to change the world. Radical Neo-Enlightenment then criticizes conventional religion and advances a reconstructed faith that would be an ally of socially-transformative Reason. It then marks out practical core steps that would lead to rational global transformation. While the book is introductory and accessible in scope and style, it confronts and develops the thought of some of the most important subversive thinkers of the past and present.

This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is often referred to as a journey. Without a doubt, every person who uses that analogy does so from at least a different perspective and likely a different reason. Sometimes it is because they have found life hard, and the term journey represents the struggle and its length they have experienced. There is some of that factor in our so titling the book. Other times, it is used to express finding life delivering beyond their expectations, and the experience took them where they never imagined going. There is that factor in our so titling the book also. Sometimes it is because life seems mundane, repetitious, and they feel caught in its cycle. There is nothing of that in our book. There is a poem called "Footprints in the Sand" by Mary Fishback Powers that illustrates the caring hand of God she experienced in hard times of life when she saw only one set of prints. Too often, that is all we look for""help in the parts of life's journey we think we need help with. True, we should look for that, but the promise of God to his children is, "I will never leave nor forsake you;" good or hard times. This book was written to demonstrate the truth and reality of that promise made over 200 times in various wordings of the Bible. This book was written""no, had to be written""so every child of God is alertly looking for what God is doing for them every day in ways they have not considered before. Then experience the amazement of realizing their Journey has been part of the Creator's plan from the beginning, who works all things according to his good and perfect will, so that they can know purpose and blessing in life and not just an aimless Journey.
