This book was released on 2007 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eighty-ninth volume of the IARC Monographs is the third and last of a series on tobacco-related agents. Volume 83 reported on the carcinogenicity of tobacco smoke and involuntary smoking (second-hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke) (IARC 2004a). Volume 85 summarized the evidence on the carcinogenic risk of chewing betel quid with and without tobacco (IARC 2004b). That volume explored the variety of products chewed in South Asia and other parts of the word that contain areca nut in combination with other ingredients, often including tobacco. In this eighty-ninth volume, the carcinogenic risks associated with the use of smokeless tobacco, including chewing tobacco and snuff, are considered in a first monograph. The second monograph reviews some tobacco-specific nitrosamines. These agents were evaluated earlier in Volume 37 of the Monographs (IARC 1985) and information gathered since that time has been summarized and evaluated.

Book excerpt: If you smoke and are unable or unwilling to quit, this approach can save your life. The book, For Smokers Only: How Smokeless Tobacco Can Save Your Life, provides concrete facts and valuable advice on a revolutionary quit-smoking strategy that is based on scientific research and common sense. Itis written by Dr. Brad Rodu, a leading authority on tobacco harm reduction, and a professor and senior scientist at the University of Alabama/Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Roduis stop-smoking strategy is based on three simple facts: 1. Smokers are addicted to nicotine, but nicotine does not cause cancer, heart attacks or emphysema. Those illnesses are caused by the other 3000 products of tobacco combustion. 2. Smokeless tobacco satisfies nicotine craving, but smokeless is 98% safer than smoking. 3. Todayis smokeless, spitless tobacco products can be used invisibly anytime, anywhere, much like a breath mint. Book excerpt: Smokeless Tobacco Products: Characteristics, Usage, Health Effects, and Regulatory Implications, a title in the Emerging Issues in Analytical Chemistry series, presents an overview of research on the second most dangerous tobacco product. This book presents findings on public health risks emanating from the complex interaction between smokeless tobacco products and their users. It covers the key components of assessment and provides insight into scientific and public health considerations. The book does not take a simplistic condemnatory position, but rather conceptualizes tobacco use in terms of graduated public health danger and harm reduction. The book begins by introducing smokeless tobacco, its history of use, marketing, and implications for public health. It then continues with coverage of epidemiology, pathology and clinical implications, addiction, and treatment, and includes laboratory studies of human use. The following section explains the chemistry, biochemical mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and role of plant cultivation and manufacturing in toxicity. Finally, the book concludes by addressing regulatory considerations, the scientific basis of regulations, and the role of these products in harm reduction for smokers. This is the first resource of its kind to cover these topics together and in language appropriate to both specialists in the research community and informed persons responsible for legislative, funding, and public health matters in the community at large. - Brings attention to smokeless tobacco product use and its association with addiction and disease - Considers smokeless tobacco use historically and currently, as well as its place in a future harm-reduction conceptualization of tobacco - Written by a distinguished, internationally recognized group of tobacco researchers from academia, independent research organizations, and the federal government with expertise in the many and various disciplines covered

Both large and small producers employ master blenders in order to create new and exciting snus products—all based on over 200 years of global expertise. A unique snus culture is developing and it’s one that has an exciting future ahead of it. More and more snus users are finding their way around the rich and varied range of products available and are starting to discover the rewards of choosing different snus varieties for different occasions. Today’s users take knowledge seriously, and just as we do with drinks, for example, we match our snus to different occasions. Snus is well on its way to becoming an integral component of the gastronomical experience. This volume on snus is the first of its kind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that tobacco ingestion can affect how people feel and think has been known for millennia, placing the plant among those used spiritually, honori?cally, and habitually (Corti 1931; Wilbert 1987). However, the conclusion that nicotine - counted for many of these psychopharmacological effects did not emerge until the nineteenth century (Langley 1905). This was elegantly described by Lewin in 1931 as follows: “The decisive factor in the effects of tobacco, desired or undesired, is nicotine. . . ”(Lewin 1998). The use of nicotine as a pharmacological probe to und- stand physiological functioning at the dawn of the twentieth century was a landmark in the birth of modern neuropharmacology (Limbird 2004; Halliwell 2007), and led the pioneering researcher John Langley to conclude that there must exist some “- ceptive substance” to explain the diverse actions of various substances, including nicotine, when applied to muscle tissue (Langley 1905). Research on tobacco and nicotine progressed throughout the twentieth century, but much of this was from a general pharmacological and toxicological rather than a psychopharmacological perspective (Larson et al. 1961). There was some attention to the effects related to addiction, such as euphoria (Johnston 1941), tolerance (Lewin 1931), and withdrawal (Finnegan et al. 1945), but outside of research supported by the tobacco industry, addiction and psychopharmacology were not major foci for research (Slade et al. 1995; Hurt and Robertson 1998; Henning?eld et al. 2006; Henning?eld and Hartel 1999; Larson et al. 1961).

Book excerpt: If you're finally ready to kick your chewing tobacco habit, then this book is for you!Quitting any habit can be hard to do, especially it's a habit that you have had for a long time. Dipping, especially, is so addictive because not only is nicotine, an addictive chemical substance involved, but also because a person gets used to the feeling of having dip in their mouth, similar to how smokers also get used to having a cigarette between their fingers. But unlike smoking cigarettes, dipping does not include the convenience of a filter to get rid of most of the harmful chemicals found in tobacco. Rather, all that bad stuff is directly absorbed, causing health problems a whole lot faster than smoking. Let's face it: Quitting the habit is not the easiest thing to do but, as the old saying goes, "nothing worth doing can be done overnight." The advantages of quitting are well worth all the hard work and withdrawals that you will have to endure. This book is here to help you, and throughout it, we will be discussing not just the "why," but more importantly, the "how." I'll walk through understanding the addiction, knowing how to quit properly, and learning how to ultimately live a tobacco-free life. Don't wait another day - let's get started now!

Even if the steps you take don't cure the problem, they can relieve symptoms and allow you to go about your daily life, or at least help you until you're able to see a doctor. Some remedies, such as changing your diet to deal with heartburn or adapting your home environment to cope with chronic pain, may seem like common sense. You may have questions about when to apply heat or cold to injuries, what helps relieve the itch of an insect bite, or whether certain herbs, vitamins or minerals are really effective against the common cold or insomnia. You'll find these answers and more in Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies. In situations involving your health or the health of your family, the same questions typically arise: What actions can I take that are immediate, safe and effective? When should I contact my doctor? What symptoms signal an emergency? Mayo Clinic Book of Home Remedies clearly defines these questions with regard to your health concerns and guides you to choose the appropriate and most effective response.
