Book excerpt: This study analyzes entrepreneurial and small-and medium-sized (SMEs) enterprises' firm performance and offers a conceptualmodel of SME performance in terms of growth and profitability. The data used inthe study consist of a representative random sample of 855 small- andmedium-sized manufacturing firms selected from the biannual directory publishedby the largest newspaper in a Midwestern state. The multi-phase approachyielded 192 key-informant responses. The study examined the following categories: performance, productimprovement, process improvement, environmental hostility, internationalization, firm size, and innovation. The findings help todistinguishbetween product improvement and process improvement as anorientation for growth. They also suggest that internationalization andinnovator position influence positively the new product and processimprovements. Moreover, environment hostility, internationalization, andproduct improvement impact positively firm growth as a performancedimension. A product improvement orientation is positively linked with firm growth andprofitability, while a focus on process improvement offered no relevantstatistical relationship to growth or profitability. As the findings of thisstudy are based on cross-sectional data, recommendations are made for futurestudies using longitudinal methods of analysis. (CBS).

Book excerpt: Utilizing a unique data set, Zoltan Acs and David Audretsch provide a rich empirical analysis of the increased importance of small firms in generating technological innovations and their growing contribution to the U.S. economy. They identify the contributions made by both small and large firms to the innovative process and the manner in which market structure, and the firm-size distribution in particular, responds to technological change. The authors' analysis relies on traditional theories of industrial organization and tests existing hypotheses, many of them previously untested due to data constraints. Innovation and Small Firms brings together two large data bases recently released by the U. S. Small Business Administration - one directly measuring innovative activity for large and small firms, the other providing a detailed census of economic activity for all manufacturing firms and plants across a broad spectrum of industries. Acs and Audretsch describe and evaluate the data bases in the context of the literature on innovation, market structure, and firm size. They present their findings on the presence of small firms, small-firm entry in manufacturing, small-firm growth and flexible technology, and mobility and firm size. They compare static and dynamic measures of small-firm viability and address the relationships between R&D, innovation, and productivity, and analyze the interaction between technological regimes and the role of government in innovation.

Book excerpt: Political and financial upheaval is not a new phenomenon – from the tulip bulb bubble in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century to Black Monday in 1987, businesses throughout history have worked to adapt and cope. However, today’s climate is even more fraught with crises, raising the levels of concern for business, society, and governments. It especially poses a challenge for small businesses, who have to learn to cope with this increasingly turbulent environment, dealing with the difficulties and taking advantage of the new opportunities that turbulence can provide. Understanding how resilience capabilities can be developed to promote sustainable business is imperative. This book provides a new paradigm for conceptualizing resilience capabilities and advances current understanding both theoretically and practically in real-world business settings. Examining the processes of resilience during different phases of crisis reveals why businesses either fail, or outperform their counterparts during times of turbulence. Based on in-depth empirical research, researchers and advanced students in small business, strategic management and risk management will find this an invaluable guide to organizational resilience.
