Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, the socialist writer James Connolly ordered an armed group to march down Dame Street in Dublin, in what became a citizens’ occupation of Dublin city centre. As Connolly hoped, the shockwave launched by the doomed uprising kindled fires of revolution throughout the colonies during all of the 20th century. On 18 November 2010, a small unescorted group of IMF technocrats walked down Dame Street – home of their goal, the Irish Central Bank – to articulate the re-colonisation of Ireland. Ireland: A Colony Once Again first explains the lack of public protest by the Irish in the face of a grim future. In particular, the author argues that the IMF move simply cemented in place a deal done long ago between globalized corporatism and Irish Catholic nationalism. Almost all sectors of Irish civil society that might have offered resistance, including Connolly’s Labour movement, had long ago been bought off or destroyed. However, the vacuum created by the perceived fall of the neoliberal world order in 2008 affords an opportunity to re-construct Ireland. In particular, the author argues that the mechanisms used to buttress the current order – from the state security apparatus to the mainstream media – have a less firm hold on power than appears at first sight to be the case. Furthermore, given its history, culture and geographic location, Ireland is very well placed to re-imagine and re-invent itself in a short space of time, in freedom and joy.
Book Synopsis Woven Shades of Green by : Tim Wenzell

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woven Shades of Green is an annotated selection of literature by authors who focus on the natural world and the beauty of Ireland. It begins with the Irish monks and their largely anonymous nature poetry, written at a time when Ireland was heavily forested. A section follows devoted to the changing Irish landscape, through both deforestation and famine, including the nature poetry of William Allingham, and James Clarence Mangan, essays from Thomas Gainford and William Thackerary, and novel excerpts from William Carleton and Emily Lawless. The anthology then turns to the nature literature of the Irish Literary Revival, including Yeats and Synge, and an excerpt from George Moore’s novel The Lake. Part four shifts to modern Irish nature poetry, beginning with Patrick Kavanaugh, and continuing with the poetry of Seamus Heaney, Eavan Boland, and others. Finally, the anthology concludes with a section on various Irish naturalist writers, and the unique prose and philosophical nature writing of John Moriarty, followed by a comprehensive list of environmental organizations in Ireland, which seek to preserve the natural beauty of this unique country. Published by Bucknell University Press. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book Synopsis Oxford Textbook of Spirituality in Healthcare by : Mark Cobb
Download or read book Oxford Textbook of Spirituality in Healthcare written by Mark Cobb and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between spirituality and healthcare is historical, intellectual and practical, and it has now emerged as a significant field in health research, healthcare policy and clinical practice and training. Understanding health and wellbeing requires addressing spiritual and existential issues, and healthcare is therefore challenged to respond to the ways spirituality is experienced and expressed in illness, suffering, healing and loss. If healthcare has compassionate regard for the humanity of those it serves, it is faced with questions about how it understands and interprets spirituality, what resources it should make available and how these are organised, and the ways in which spirituality shapes and informs the purpose and practice of healthcare? These questions are the basis for this resource, which presents a coherent field of enquiry, discussion and debate that is interdisciplinary, international and vibrant. There is a growing corpus of articles in medical and healthcare journals on spirituality in addition to a wide range of literature, but there has been no attempt so far to publish a standard text on this subject. Spirituality in Healthcare is an authoritative reference on the subject providing unequalled coverage, critical depth and an integrated source of key topics. Divided into six sections including practice, research, policy and training, the project brings together international contributions from scholars in the field to provide a unique and stimulating resource.
