Book excerpt: A girl comes of age in Paris with her expatriate family—and struggles with sibling rivalry—in a “delightful” novel that “captures the essence of childhood” (Library Journal). Based on the author’s life with her famous father, novelist James Jones, A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries tells the story of Channe Willis, who happily lives with her parents in Paris. But when they adopt a French boy named Benoit—ending Channe’s only-child status—her idyllic world is disrupted, and the relationships among this unusual family turn volatile. The basis for a Merchant Ivory film, this is a “discerning, brightly written” novel about love and loss (Library Journal). “Although we’ve gotten used to second-generation actors equaling or surpassing the accomplishments of their parents, the same hasn’t happened with second-generation novelists. Nonetheless there are a few . . . and added to their small number ought to be Kaylie Jones.” —The New York Times “Every page is a joy.” —Sue Harrison, Self Magazine Includes a new introduction by the author and a previously unpublished chapter

Download or read book Ida Lupino written by William Donati and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British-born actress, singer, director, and producer Ida Lupino (1918-1995) cut one of the most alluring profiles of any Hollywood persona during the forties and fifties. The star of classic films such as They Drive by Night (1940), High Sierra (1941), and Road House (1948), she was a stalwart of the screen throughout her early career and frequently received top billing ahead of stars such as Humphrey Bogart. While her talent was undeniable, her insistence on taking only roles she felt would challenge her professionally often put her at odds with the demands of studio executives. It was in those periods of frustration and suspension as an actor that Lupino fostered a talent for the filmmaking process. In a bold decision for a woman of the era, she founded her own independent production company where she became widely regarded as one of the most prolific filmmakers working at the height of the Hollywood studio system. She has been described by fellow directors such as Martin Scorsese as "resilient, with a remarkable empathy for the fragile and heartbroken." William Donati's Ida Lupino: A Biography chronicles the dramatic life of one of Hollywood's most substantive and innovative artists who lived her life unapologetically both behind and in front of the camera.

Book Synopsis The Italian Invert by : Michael Rosenfeld
Download or read book The Italian Invert written by Michael Rosenfeld and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Each of us has his tastes inscribed in his brain and heart; whether he fulfills his urges with regret or with joy, he must fulfill them. He should let others act according to their own nature. It’s fate that creates us and guides us throughout our lives: to fight against it would be little more than fruitless, foolish, and reckless!” In the late 1880s, a dashing young Italian aristocrat made an astonishing confession to the novelist Émile Zola. In a series of revealing letters, he frankly described his sexual experiences with other men—including his seduction as a teenager by one of his father’s friends and his first love affair, with a sergeant during his military service—as well as his “extraordinary” personality. Judging it too controversial, Zola gave it to a young doctor, who in 1896 published a censored version in a medical study on sexual inversion, as homosexuality was then known. When the Italian came across this book, he was shocked to discover how his life story had been distorted. In protest, he wrote a long, daring, and unapologetic letter to the doctor defending his right to love and to live as he wished. This book is the first complete, unexpurgated version in English of this remarkable queer autobiography. Its text is based on the recently discovered manuscript of the Italian’s letter to the doctor. It also features an introduction tracing the textual history of the documents, analytical essays, and additional materials that help place the work in its historical context. Offering a striking glimpse of gay life in Europe in the late nineteenth century, The Italian Invert brings to light the powerful voice of a young man who forthrightly expressed his desires and eloquently affirmed his right to pleasure.
