Drawing on the Bible and other religious texts, Tyler argues that slaveholding is not only morally wrong, but also contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ. This work provides a valuable historical insight into the debates surrounding slavery in the years leading up to the American Civil War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slaveholding a Malum in Se or Invariably Sinful While the friends of the slave and of human rights are rapidly enrolling themselves as members of the American Anti-Slavery Society, and participating actively in its noble enterprize, regarding it as the only effective organization for relieving the country of slavery by peaceful measures; not a few persons of respectability and influence, withhold their support, on the ground that they cannot conscientiously pronounce all slaveholding to be sinful, and every slaveholder guilty. They object, not to the measures of the Society, which they acknowledge are constitutional, but to this sentiment, which is affirmed to be one of its distinctive doctrines. Were we doubtful of its truth and practical utility we should refer these gentlemen to the Constitution of the American Anti-Slavery Society, which declares the sinfulness of slavery in general terms, without asserting the absolute impossibility of innocently holding a slave in any conceivable case. Can the conscientious opponents of slavery as a system, hesitate to co-operate under such a Constitution with the conscientious opponents of all slaveholding? We choose not, however, to urge their co-operation on this ground, it being our firm persuasion, that they may yet be convinced of the truth of this (at present) repulsive doctrine, and do much, by its recognition and acknowledgement, towards rectifying the public sentiment of the nation, and severing the chains of slavery. To prove that slaveholding is invariably sinful, is, therefore, the object of these pages. The design in view demands a definition of slavery, accurately distinguishing it from other kinds of servitude, with which it is apt to be confounded. Book excerpt: In an exciting reinterpretation of the early nineteenth century, Leo Hirrel demonstrates the importance of religious ideas by exploring the relationship between religion and reform efforts during a crucial period in American history. The result is a work that moves the history of antebellum reform to a higher level of sophistication. Hirrel focuses upon New School Congregationalists and Presbyterians who served at the forefront of reform efforts and provided critical leadership to anti-Catholic, temperance, antislavery, and missionary movements. Their religion was an attempt to reconcile traditional Calvinist language with the prevalent intellectual trends of the time. New School theologians preserved Calvinist language about depravity, but they incorporated an assertion of nominal human ability to overcome sin and a belief in the fixed, immutable nature of truth. Describing both the origins of New School Calvinism and the specific reform activities that grew out of these beliefs, Hirrel provides a fresh perspective on the historical background of religious controversies.

Book excerpt: In the 1830s, the abolitionist movement gained remarkable momentum due in large measure to the establishment of the American Anti-Slavery Society and the work carried out by one of its most important leaders, Theodore Dwight Weld. One of Weld's most significant accomplishments was the recruitment of a group of key abolitionist agents, known as the "Seventy," who worked to expand the reach of abolitionist thought and action and enlisted new members into the movement. This volume chronicles the founding, development, and mission of the American Anti-Slavery Society, the contributions of Weld, and the crusading efforts of the agents he assembled. With the most complete list to date of the identities of the Seventy, this work constitutes a valuable contribution to the history of the abolitionist movement.

Book excerpt: Drawing on Indigenous peoples' struggles against settler colonialism, Theft Is Property! reconstructs the concept of dispossession as a means of explaining how shifting configurations of law, property, race, and rights have functioned as modes of governance, both historically and in the present. Through close analysis of arguments by Indigenous scholars and activists from the nineteenth century to the present, Robert Nichols argues that dispossession has come to name a unique recursive process whereby systematic theft is the mechanism by which property relations are generated. In so doing, Nichols also brings long-standing debates in anarchist, Black radical, feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial thought into direct conversation with the frequently overlooked intellectual contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is your invitation to an extraordinary journey through the intersections of philosophy and law. In this captivating book, Paul McKeever presents a powerful new method of considering the world's most famously long-standing, unresolved philosophical problems. He also demonstrates, in an entertaining and convincing way, the practical importance of achieving solutions to such problems. In each chapter, McKeever places you in the role of a presiding judge, meticulously analyzing a vexing legal dispute rooted in a long-standing philosophical paradox or dilemma. You will discover that, in each case, the elusiveness of the solution to the philosophical puzzle stems from the perspective from which philosophers have considered it. You will witness the transformative power of McKeever's new philosophical method as you skillfully apply its solutions to each court case, and are illuminated by the profound impact of philosophical thinking on real-world problems. "JUDGE" is an eye-opening exploration, offering thinkers from all fields of endeavour an uncharted perspective on the timeless mysteries that shape our understanding of the world. Whether you are a philosophy student, a law professor, a physician, a police officer, a baker, an artist, a legislator, a political activist, or someone who is preparing for a world in which the proper adoption of new technologies such as artificial intelligence will require a command of effective philosophical problem-solving skills: prepare to challenge your intellect and reshape your perceptions in this riveting fusion of philosophy and law. 13 PHILOSOPHICAL PROBLEMS RESOLVED IN THIS DISSERTATION - Are “facts” trumped by your perceptions/beliefs/feelings/assertions? - The Problem of Identity vs. Change: Is the old grey mare what she used to be? - Do you perceive the external world? As it really is? Does it exist? Can you know it to exist? - The Problem of Universals: What do all commonalities have in common? - What is meaning?: If your neighbor claims that everything he says is a lie, is he telling the truth? - What is truth? If it’s a fact that you will murder someone tomorrow, do you have the freedom and power not to do so? - The Problem of Causality: what causes a tennis ball to bounce? - The Problem of Induction: If you’ve only seen white swans, can you say with certainty that all swans are white? - Is “free will” a myth? Is the future written? Do you already have a fate? - The IS-OUGHT Problem: Are goodness and virtue subjective? One-size-fits-all? Dependent on the situation? A myth? - What is justice? - Are natural rights a myth? - What is freedom?
