Book excerpt: Sky Knife is a young man cursed with an unlucky name - a name his mother saw in a vision and pledged that her son would bear, to honor whatever destiny the gods had decreed. He hasn't the luck to take one of the usual paths charted for his people: farmer, soldier, merchant - all these roads are closed to him. The only hope for him lies in service at the King's Temple, where - he hopes - the gods will make clear his purpose in the world. But as a novice priest he has little hope of fulfilling his destiny. That is, until a human sacrifice goes horribly wrong, priests begin to die, and the skies fill with dangerous portents and visions. Magic of all sorts seems to cling to Sky Knife like a shroud, but if he is daring and lucky enough, he may just find out the answer - and, in doing so, win a place among his people. Sky Knife is a compelling and evocative portrait of ancient Mayan culture. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gritty translated novel locates the power of resistance in women, and in the pen. In A KNIFE IN THE SKY, a journalist's decision to talk and a student's desire to know puts them in the crosshairs of a murderous dictatorship. As the novel opens, Mika is dangerously engaged in the pursuit of truth during Haiti's first Duvalier regime. Nearly thirty years later, her granddaughter Junon witnesses the repressive dynasty's unravelling. Brutal, terrifying, and hopeful, A KNIFE IN THE SKY is an homage to those who have survived tyranny. Originally published by Éditions du Remue-mènage in 2015 as Femmes au temps des carnassiers, this book, like most of the author's oeuvre, is preoccupied with colonial imposition. Marie-Célie Agnant writes on the ruthlessness of a dictatorship, on humanity, and locates the strength and power of resistance in women. "The work is shaped through a rich, crafted language that creates an acute awareness of what duvalierism was. This considerable effort is not a catharsis, nor an anamnesis; rather, it is the heart-rending testimony of the suffering, the inner struggles and the stand against Duvalierism of a woman caught in the midst of a regime that redefined the heights of horror."--Alain Saint-Victor, Potomitan "Marie-Célie Agnant's work is noble: she names and narrates terrible emotions and chaos, yet always in a sensitive and poetic way. The fate of the women in her books is not sealed by the torment of their daily lives, but in the humanity of each one. Through these portraits of women--courageous women, women who are full of hope, even without underestimating the weight on their shoulders--Agnant shows us the pain they carry from one generation to the next."--Le Fil Rouge Fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2011 James Beard Foundation Award for International Cooking, this is the authoritative guide to stir-frying: the cooking technique that makes less seem like more, extends small amounts of food to feed many, and makes ingredients their most tender and delicious. The stir-fry is all things: refined, improvisational, adaptable, and inventive. The technique and tradition of stir-frying, which is at once simple yet subtly complex, is as vital today as it has been for hundreds of years—and is the key to quick and tasty meals. In Stir-Frying to the Sky’s Edge, award-winning author Grace Young shares more than 100 classic stir-fry recipes that sizzle with heat and pop with flavor, from the great Cantonese stir-fry masters to the culinary customs of Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghai, Beijing, Fujian, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, as well as other countries around the world. With more than eighty stunning full-color photographs, Young’s definitive work illustrates the innumerable, easy-to-learn possibilities the technique offers—dry stir-fries, moist stir-fries, clear stir-fries, velvet stir-fries—and weaves the insights of Chinese cooking philosophy into the preparation of beloved dishes as Kung Pao Chicken, Stir-Fried Beef and Broccoli, Chicken Lo Mein with Ginger Mushrooms, and Dry-Fried Sichuan Beans.

Book excerpt: Shonen Knife-an all-female punk trio from Osaka, Japan-cultivated a global fan base that has included the likes of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Their 1998 album Happy Hour, filled with tunes about delicacies ranging from sushi to banana chips, encapsulates the band's charming fusion of cuteness with punk rock cool. Tracing histories of food and josei rock in Japan, McCorkle Okazaki outlines the ways Shonen Knife has, over the last forty years, consistently used seemingly straightforward songs about food to comment on gender stereotypes in popular culture.

Book excerpt: While a member of the U.S. Air Force in Morocco in 1954-55, I was assigned to attend French language classes. While in class, I met Marcel, he was also ordered to attend classes in the French Language. Marcel was a U.S. citizen who was in the French Foreign Legion at the time. He also said he was told by his Officers that he had one year to learn the French Language or he may not be allowed to remain in the Foreign Legion. It was discovered Marcel was an expert at knife throwing, one of my life long desires. He agreed to teach me all the knowledge required to throw knives. After a few days we started our knife throwing training. I was told by him that it would take approximately three months to learn the art of knife throwing. We first built a wooden target, three ft. by three ft. and placed on posts buried in the ground at approximately six foot high. The knives are to be thrown at the target from fifteen to eighteen ft. away. The knives are constructed from one piece of flexible stainless steel. They are approximately eleven inches long,. Whenever the occasion allowed, Marcel and I traveled to places in Morocco to observe the sights. Roman ruins, women's prison, locus swarm, dust storms. If it was there, we wanted to see it. I felt compelled to describe our trips in my knife throwing manual. The knife throwing manual covers how to throw knives in a very well outlined method. It repeats it's self several times to make sure the student fully understands exactly what is required by him to be a successful knife thrower. The manual covers how a throwing knife is constructed and why. It covers how to hold the throwing knife and how to release it. How to take steps when throwing and using your arms to obtain your goal. And making the knife stick where you wish. This manual is aimed at the training of the novice knife thrower. Those who use it should reach a satisfying level in knife throwing. I am thankful for your purchase of this manual and hope to see you all throw someday.

Too much water, however, can mean death. After winter floods destroy the canals, the farming clans of Serpentgate fear that their last days have come--the time of desperation and division spoken of in the Prophecy of the Rainbow Knife. Mysterious deaths, accusations of witchcraft, and a clash between rain priests and the priestesses of the mother goddess have set parents against children, men against women, clan against clan. To prevent this calamity, Waterstrider, one of the Watermasters who long ago built the canals, is called home out of exile. Waterstrider and his allies must survive a web of intrigue to restore the vast canal system and preserve their way of life. Volume 2 of Tales of the Watermasters Dramatic action and memorable characters drive an epic story of an ancient civilization. In these captivating novels set in the prehistoric Southwest, the People of Two Rivers are shown at the height of their glory as they face a catastrophe that threatens to destroy them utterly. Before written history began in what we now know as Arizona, a vibrant culture of builders, dreamers, and artists known as the Hohokam flourished there for a thousand years. And then they vanished. What became of these people? To find out, you'll have to wait for Bitter Wind, the third volume of the Tales of the Watermasters. Praise for the series: “Enthralling stories” . . . “vividly written” . . . “timeless human concerns” . . . “meticulously researched prehistoric world” Sally Bennett Boyington’s re-creation of the Hohokam world is sure to enchant readers of Jean M. Auel’s beloved Clan of the Cave Bear and W. Michael Gear and Kathleen O’Neal Gear’s award-winning First North American series. Take the first step on your own adventure . . . walk with the Watermasters today!

While research diagnosing the cause of rising knife crime abounds, few studies articulate effective solutions to this complex social problem. Drawing on data from cities across the UK, Sue Roberts suggests concrete forms of collaboration that may just spare future generations from the worst of this terrifying scourge. “Solutions to knife crime: a path through the red sea?” will fascinate law-enforcers, policy-makers, criminologists and other specialists both within and outside academia. It will also appeal to anyone who’s been affected, or is simply concerned, by this blight on British society.
