Book excerpt: The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.

Book excerpt: That nuclear medicine has advanced so far and so fast is due in no small measure to GEORGE VON HEVESY. His work on radioactive indicator technique laid the foundation on which this young branch of medicine was able to develop in the decade which followed World War II. In the intervening years the second generation has grown up in nuclear medicine. Some of them were still exposed to VON HEVESY'S influence, for instance, his address to the 1957 meeting of the Italian Society of Nuclear Medicine in Turin, or his Marie Curie Memorial Lecture at the Pittsburg meeting of the North American Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1961. Others again will remember that he helped to found the European Society of Nuclear Medicine in 1962-1963 and became its honorary president. It was VON HEVESY who, together with HEILMEYER, insisted that this be a completely open society, having neither national nor geographical attributes, its Europeanness being reflected in the variety of languages spoken at its congresses. Its members exhibited a similar variety, including in addition to those medically qualified -specialists in internal medicine, radiologists and laboratory research workers-physicists, chemists and engineers. A group of young second-generation scientists from eleven countries have dedicated these papers to the memory of the great pioneer of nuclear medicine. This book contains new results reported by doctors, physicists, chemists and computer specialists-results so far-ranging as to push the frontiers of nuclear medicine still further forward.

Book excerpt: Educational opportunities for pediatric residents and primary care providers that contribute to increased competence in pediatric dermatology are an important component of improving the quality and efficiency of dermatologic care provided to children and adolescents. The 13 articles that comprise this issue have been selected to capture a significant proportion of the most common skindiseases that are seen in children and adolescents. They are intended to provide practical information on diagnosis and initial management that can be performed by the primary care provider and to provide a framework for allowing for more active involvement by the primary care provider with regards to ongoing management of these conditions. From atopic dermatitis to vitiligo, the pediatric primary care provider is guaranteed to see these conditions in their practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical Shock Safety Criteria documents the proceedings of the First International Symposium on Electrical Shock Safety Criteria, held in Toronto, Canada, 7-9 September 1983. The objective was to establish the state of the art in the field of electrical shock safety criteria as applied to electrical power utilities. The symposium brought together leading experts from electrical utilities, universities, and research laboratories from around the world, interested in problems associated with electrical shock and safety. The proceedings are organized in three sections, each consisting of the morning review papers and afternoon panel discussions. Section 1 presents an in-depth analysis of the physiology of electrical shocks including such topics as body-weight scaling, electrocution equation, physiological effects of electrical current, and factors affecting fibrillation threshold. Section 2 focuses on the analysis of body impedance under various conditions and the techniques for measuring current distribution in the body. Section 3 is devoted to discussions of safety criteria and related standards from the point of view of current practices in electrical utilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to summarize new technologies for engineered cell manipulation. The contents focus on control of cellular functions by nanomaterials and control of three-dimensional cell–cell interactions. Control of cellular functions is important for cell differentiation, maturation, and activation, which generally are controlled by the addition of soluble cytokines or growth factors into cell culture dishes. Target antigen molecules can be efficiently delivered to the cytosol of the dendritic cells using the nanoparticle technique described here, and cellular functions such as dendritic cell maturation can be controlled easily and with precision. This book describes basic preparation of the nanoparticles, activation control of dendritic cells, immune function control, and in vivo application for various vaccination systems. The second type of control, that of cell–cell interaction, is important for tissue engineering in order to develop three-dimensional cellular constructs. To achieve in vitro engineering of three-dimensional human tissue constructs, cell–cell interaction must be controlled in three dimensions, but typical biological cell manipulation technique cannot accomplish this task. An engineered cell manipulation technique is necessary. In this book the authors describe the fabrication of nanofilms onto cell surfaces, development of three-dimensional cellular multilayers, and various applications of the cellular multilayers as three-dimensional human models. This important work will be highly informative for researchers and students in the fields of materials science, polymer science, biomaterials, medicinal science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and biology.

Book excerpt: Now in its seventh edition, this highly-regarded book is designed as an introductory and reference text on the principles of diagnosis, staging, and treatment of tumors. As for the last 6 editions of the book, the aim and scope of the new edition are once again to provide a thorough yet reasonably brief account of the whole field of oncology, focusing on the latest principles of cancer management. The book is already well established, having been first published in 1986 and in continuous print since then. The authors are rightfully proud of their strong legacy of providing carefully revised new editions of this standard and well-received cancer text for audiences in the UK and abroad. Oncology is a very rapidly changing speciality, with many new treatments and even treatment modalities coming on stream with bewildering speed. Besides a thorough general updating of the text, figures, and tables, the new seventh edition adds a new chapter on Molecular Targeted Therapy, making the book 30 chapters in total. This accessible and practical resource is invaluable to trainees and specialists alike in oncology, palliative care and general medicine, as well as specialist nurses, general practitioners, medical students, and professions allied to medicine.

Book excerpt: The human eye perceives only light in the visible spectrum, but with specially modified cameras, lenses, and visible-light blocking filters, photographers can record ultraviolet wavelengths. In this book, author David Prutchi shows you how to select equipment that allows you to capture otherworldly UV images. You’ll learn how to use filters that block visible light and prevent infrared light leaks and will discover how supplementing or overpowering sunlight with artificial UV light sources can help you create stronger images. You’ll also learn postprocessing techniques designed to enhance your UV photographs. There is much to discover about the world as seen by bees, birds, and butterflies (and other creatures). Prutchi takes you into the wild to capture UV images that show how flowers advertise their nectar with beautiful markings to attract pollinating insects and birds. You’ll also discover how butterflies that look dull in visible light burst with intricate, iridescent patterns in UV. Finally, you’ll learn about the scientific, medical, and forensic uses of ultraviolet photography. From start to finish, this book will educate, inspire photographic creativity, and foster a better understanding of the UV world.
