Book excerpt: Written by an old timer who has been schussing the nooks and the crannies, the steeps and the deeps, for 50 years, ""Ski Tales: The History of China Peak and Sierra Summit ""reveals the unique, dramatic, and often humorous history of Central California's premiere ski location, Sierra Summit, from its beginning as China Peak to the present day. Taking an affectionate, but realistic, view of the ski resort that has been the center of his life for so many years, Benelli tells the true history of Sierra Summit, its successes and shortcomings, and the interesting folks who nurtured the resort to what it is today. Along the way, ""Ski Tales ""provides a fascinating first-hand look at how the sport of skiing has developed in the last 50 years, as new ski technology, business pressures, and a changing society transformed a once rustic mom-and-pop ski resort to an international sports destination. Illustrated with dozens of vintage and new photos of colorful personalities and breathtaking snowscapes, ""Ski Tales""will take you on a nostalgic journey through decades of perfect snow, sunny days, fun, and friendship.

Book excerpt: Nestled amidst California's High Sierra peaks, two valleys have captured the imaginations of skiers and mountain explorers year after year. In this account, local author and longtime skier Eddy Starr Ancinas shares the histories of Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows as they've never been told before, including the stories of John Reily, Wayne Poulsen and Alex Cushing, the visionaries whose dreams and determination forever transformed North Lake Tahoe. Squaw made a name for itself on the world stage thanks to its surprise nomination as host of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, just one mountain apart, Alpine was built with the support of local skiers and Bay Area families. Today, a new chapter unfolds as the distinct philosophies behind Squaw and Alpine unite under common ownership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is especially written for all insecure skiers in the first place. If you think, that you are a beginner or an intermediate skier, this book is thought to be the right choice for you. But everyone, interested in understanding, developing, learning and teaching downhill skiing can benefit from this work. I have been working on this material since 2010 and the work is still going on. My basic point is, that you should prepare yourself, before you go to ski. It is too late to make your mental preparation on the slopes, this should be done at home before. You should be able to imagine for yourself what you must do in order to do it right or as good as possible. This imagination should not be just a picture! It should be like a whole movie, with many of your senses involved, just like in a detailed dream. Like, if you can imagine the whole ski-turn with many, clear details, what basic movements you have to do, how it should feel in your body, how it should look like, how it should change during the development of your turn, this will prepare your correct movements in the real life. But this must happen step by step, starting by the easiest skills and developing further when you have tried out the first steps first. For this reason I have divided the material in 3 different levels. You will need quite a long time for this. So please be patient, take your time, work with my book, do not just read it! Understanding and explaining skiing is complicated and it takes time. My suggestion is to read carefully, take several breaks and think carefully about the sections you find difficult to understand. If you are a beginner, start reading the book as soon as possible before your start your skiing. You can stop reading after the beginner level and go skiing on green and blue slopes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SKI TALES, They Learned to Ski at Monster Mountain is the first in a series of illustrated outdoor snow riding adventure books written for children and adolescents aged 4-14. Illustrator, Jerry Wilson, brings out the personalities of the characters in his action-packed style. The reader meets the diverse group of quirky neighborhood friends who have the love of snow in common. It's a "snow day," and they have the chance to learn to ski like the oldest of the group, Daron. The setting, "Monster Mountain," is a fictional resort with plenty of vertical thrills for skiers and snow-riders of every level. Trail names like "Frankenstein" and "Yeti," reflect the monster theme of the resort. To bring realism to the tale, the author draws from her personal skiing experiences and from observing ski school classes and ski racing training sessions at a local ski resort. The plot takes the reader through the experiences of this group of beginner skiers, as they learn the basics of technique and tactics, including stance, turning, and stopping. When Daron (the oldest and a somewhat experienced skier) violates the Responsibility Code, he separates from the group and a search ensues. The story encourages courteous and cautious skiing and introduces a few basic ski lessons and the concept of ski racing. The book teaches the National Ski Areas Association's "RESPONSIBILITY CODE" in a humorous and entertaining way and the Code is reprinted at the back of the book for reference. The book is an ideal gift for new skiers. It encourages their interest in learning to ski and emphasizes safety and courtesy to preserve the beauty and enjoyment of the sport for all.
