Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Sketches of Young Gentlemen by Charles Dickens.Following the phenomenal popularity of Boz's Sketches and The Pickwick Papers, Dickens produced two short volumes of Sketches of Young Gentlemen and Young Couples, in response to the appearance of Sketches of Young Ladies for 'Quiz'. Each volume aims to dissect the characteristics of familiar types like 'The Bashful Young Gentleman', 'The Literary Young Lady' and 'The couple who pamper themselves'. Whimsical, satirical, witty and exuberant, the sketches ridicule their subjects' behavior with perfect comic effect, making Mr. Whiffler, Mrs. Chopper and their companions instantly recognizable. They offer intriguing visions of courtship rituals and sex relationships in the early Victorian era, and fascinating evidence of a writer learning his craft and refining his style.Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic. Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Sketches by Boz, Illustrative of Every-Day Life by Dickens.is a collection of short pieces that Charles Dickens originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836. They were reproduced published in book form, under their current title, in February and August 1836, . The first complete edition of a volume appeared in 1839. The 56 sketches refer to scenes and people from London, and all the work is divided into four sections: "Our parish", "Scenes", "Characters" and "Tales". The material in the first three sections consists of non-narrative portraits, but the last section comprises fictional stories. The sketch "Mr Minns and his Cousin" (originally titled "A Dinner at Poplar Walk"), was the first work of fiction that Dickens published. It appeared in The Monthly Magazine in December 1833. Although Dickens continued to place pieces in that magazine, none of them bore a signature until August 1834, when "The Boarding House" appeared under the strange pseudonym "Boz". A verse in Bentley's Miscellany for March 1837 recalled the public's perplexity over this pseudonym, Charles Dickens - Charles John Huffam Dickens FRSA (February 7, 1812 - June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic.

Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer of Louisa May Alcott illuminates the world of Little Women and its author. Since its publication in 1868–69, Little Women, perhaps America’s most beloved children’s classic, has been handed down from mother to daughter for generations. It has been translated into more than fifty languages and inspired six films, four television shows, a Broadway musical, an opera, and a web series. This lavish, four-color edition features over 220 curated illustrations, including stills from the films, stunning art by Norman Rockwell, and iconic illustrations by children’s-book illustrators Alice Barber Stevens, Frank T. Merrill, and Jessie Wilcox Smith. Renowned Alcott scholar John Matteson brings his expertise to the book, to the March family it creates, and to the Alcott family who inspired it all. Through numerous photographs taken in the Alcott family home expressly for this edition—elder daughter Anna’s wedding dress, the Alcott sisters’ theater costumes, sister May’s art, and Abba Alcott’s recipe book—readers discover the extraordinary links between the real and the fictional family. Matteson’s annotations evoke the once-used objects and culture of a distant but still-relevant time, from the horse-drawn carriages to the art Alcott carefully placed in her story to references to persons little known today. His brilliant introductory essays examine Little Women’s pivotal place in children’s literature and tell the story of Alcott herself—a tale every bit as captivating as her fiction.

Book excerpt: “Trapped in their cozy catacombs, the couples have made sex by turns their toy, their glue, their trauma, their therapy, their hope, their frustration, their revenge, their narcotic, their main line of communication and their sole and pitiable shield against the awareness of death.”—Time One of the signature novels of the American 1960s, Couples is a book that, when it debuted, scandalized the public with prose pictures of the way people live, and that today provides an engrossing epitaph to the short, happy life of the “post-Pill paradise.” It chronicles the interactions of ten young married couples in a seaside New England community who make a cult of sex and of themselves. The group of acquaintances form a magical circle, complete with ritualistic games, religious substitutions, a priest (Freddy Thorne), and a scapegoat (Piet Hanema). As with most American utopias, this one’s existence is brief and unsustainable, but the “imaginative quest” that inspires its creation is eternal. Praise for Couples “Couples [is] John Updike’s tour de force of extramarital wanderlust.”—The New York Times Book Review “Ingenious . . . If this is a dirty book, I don’t see how sex can be written about at all.”—Wilfrid Sheed, The New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's first published book, Sketches by Boz (1836) heralded an exciting new voice in English literature. This richly varied collection of observation, fancy, and fiction show the London he knew so intimately at its best and worst - its streets, theatres, inns, pawnshops, law courts, prisons, omnibuses, and the river Thames - in honest and visionary descriptions of everyday life and people. Through pen portraits that often anticipate characters from his great novels, we see the condemned man in his prison cell, garrulous matrons, vulgar young clerks, and Scrooge-like bachelors, while Dickens's powers for social critique are never far from the surface, in unflinching depictions of the vast metropolis's forgotten citizens, from child workers to prostitutes. A startling mixture of humor and pathos, these Sketches reveal London as wonderful terrain for an extraordinary young writer. Sketches is a remarkable achievement and look towards Dickens's giant novels in its profusion of characters, its glimpses of surreal modernity, and its limitless fund of pathos and comic invention.
