The present rapid and luxurious system of traveling, contrasted with the slow and comfortless facilities of other days, has developed an irresistible longing to see for one's self the wonders and beauties of other climes. Believing that to many of our friends an account of places visited by us would be of inter est, and serve also as a pleasant remembrancer to those who composed our party of tourists, on their. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Idyl of the South, Vol. 1 of 2 In "An Idyl of the South" I have aimed to tell the story of an Octoroon. Her life discloses a type. My readers will form their own conclusions of the sociological conditions suggested by the narrative. It were better to think over some things in silence than to discuss them openly. The story is true to the life. It strikes at the root of certain conditions which have been thrust upon us by the humiliating consequences of Slavery. Some complications in the social order, obtaining in the development of the South before the War, are exceedingly interesting from our present viewpoint, instructed as we are by the larger observations and experiences of a more enlightened civilization. I hope to deal with certain new phases of the subject in a work which is to follow this volume. The eventualities of Emancipation and Reconstruction are upon us for consideration, and some deep and grave matters cannot be thrust aside as trivial things. The reckoning must come. Download or read book The Literature of the South (Classic Reprint) written by Montrose Jonas Moses and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the South The title selected for this book is one wherein a policy of exclusion could be systematically adopted; for, while there is a distinctive literature of the South, there is and has been much literary activity in the South which has contributed little or nothing to the sectional development. Many of the Southern manuals and estimates reveal too generous an inclination to include within their pages the names of those whom sentiment conjured up beyond the real measure of their importance. A local notoriety, a limited influence, an occasional inspiration, a sporadic paper - all these tend to swell into misguiding proportions a conscientious list of Southern writers. Many there have been of pleasing talents, and of exceptional powers as far as they have gone - but somewhere the amateur spirit soon reveals their momentary character. The greatest enemies of any literary movement are those who carry adulation in criticism to an excess. Southern literature has, until recently, found itself handicapped through a deplorable lack of any discriminating standards by which to judge it. However unified the fundamental interests of this country may be, the South - as well as any other section - has had a growth peculiarly its own. We would not deny the individuality of New England, even though that individuality be recognized as an element only in the evolution of the nation.
