Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an extraordinary account of a man’s vision, of a life that for over six decades successfully championed the betterment of Muslim youth and communities the world over. Totonji, a lone voice with little training, would become an inspiration for others and a powerful fundraiser. From a humble few hundred dollars of his own money, and an efficient team of like-minded students, he ultimately established one of the largest networks of local and international organisations in the world, travelling to more than 130 countries over the course of decades, to render help wherever it was needed. Along that journey he met some eminent personalities including Dato’ Anwar Ibrahim (current Prime Minister of Malaysia), Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. His impact on others from East to West is immeasurable. As such this book is not about Totonji but his work – what faith, passion, drive and determination can achieve. In it he shares essential spiritual and ethical leadership principles, in the hope that others draw valuable lessons from all he has learned and live the experience with him. Seeking no praise and no gain, Allah and prayer was his first priority, service to others his second, and all else third.

Book Synopsis Whitman East and West by : Ed Folsom
Download or read book Whitman East and West written by Ed Folsom and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2005-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Whitman East and West, fifteen prominent scholars track the surprising ways in which Whitman's poetry and prose continue to be meaningful at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Covering a broad range of issues—from ecology to children's literature, gay identity to China's May 4th Movement, nineteenth-century New York politics to the emerging field of normality studies, Mao Zedong to American film—each original essay opens a previously unexplored field of study, and each yields new insights by demonstrating how emerging methodologies and approaches intersect with and illuminate Whitman's ideas about democracy, sexuality, America, and the importance of literature. Confirming the growing international spirit of American studies, the essays in Whitman East and West developed out of a landmark conference in Beijing, the first major conference in China to focus on an American poet. Scholars from Asia, Europe, and North America set out to track the ways in which Whitman's poetry has become part of China's cultural landscape as well as the literary landscapes of other countries. By describing his assimilation into other cultures and his resulting transformation into a hybrid poet, these essayists celebrate Whitman's multiple manifestations in other languages and contexts.

Download or read book Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development in Rural China written by Yisheng Zheng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-01-07 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development in Rural China is translated from the original Chinese to provide a look into how scholars in China have been assessing perceptions of poverty and reforms to improve conditions. This volume, and the others in the SSRC series, provides Western scholars with an accessible English language look at the state of current scholarship in China and, as such, does not simply provide information for the direct study of socio-political issues, but also for meta-level analysis of how the domestic scholarship in China is developing and assessing the interplay of the country's political and economic reforms with the society and daily life of its people.

Book Synopsis The San Francisco System and Its Legacies by : Kimie Hara
Download or read book The San Francisco System and Its Legacies written by Kimie Hara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1951, Japan signed a peace treaty with forty-eight countries in San Francisco; in April 1952, the treaty came into effect. The San Francisco Peace Treaty is an international agreement that in significant ways shaped the post–World War II international order in the Asia-Pacific. With its associated security arrangements, it laid the foundation for the regional structure of Cold War confrontation: the "San Francisco System" fully reflected the strategic interests and policy priorities of the peace conference’s host nation, the United States. The treaty fell far short of settling outstanding issues in the wake of the Pacific War or facilitating a clean start for the "post-war" period. Rather, critical aspects of the settlement were left equivocal, and continue to have significant and worrisome implications for regional international relations. This book examines the key developments of the contentious political and security issues in the Asia-Pacific that share a common foundation in the post-war disposition of Japan, particularly the San Francisco Peace Treaty. These include both tangible and intangible issues, such as disputes over territories and "history" problems. Taking the San Francisco System as its conceptual grounding, the authors examine how these issues developed and have remained contentious long after the San Francisco arrangements. To provide bases for producing solutions, the chapters offer comprehensive accounts that explain and deepen our understanding of these complex regional issues and the San Francisco System as a whole. By closely and systematically examining the legacy and various ramifications of the San Francisco System, this fascinating book adds to our understanding of current and growing tensions in the region. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian studies, history, international relations and politics.

Book excerpt: By drawing together widely dispersed yet central writings, the Berlin Reader is an essential resource for everyone interested in urban development in one of the most interesting and important metropolises in Europe. It provides scholars as well as students, journalists and visitors with an overview of the most central discussions on the tremendous changes Berlin experienced since the fall of the wall. It covers a wide range of issues, including inner city renewal, housing and the local economy, gentrification and other urban conflicts. The book breaks ground in two dimensions: first, by offering also non-German speakers an insight into the very controversial debates after reunification, and, second, by highlighting the ambivalent consequences of Berlin's urban transformation in the past decades.
