Book excerpt: '66 Frames chronicles encounters with Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg and many others as - in the words of Lawrence Ferlinghetti - "the young Southern innocent sets forth in all his whiteness to find himself among visionary New York poets and other flaming creatures." Gordon Ball offers a swirl of sixties life - working as assistant to film pioneer Jonas Mekas in his Third Avenue loft; visits with Andy Warhol at his Factory; antiwar marches - in a journey through the decade that took visual imagery outside the box, beyond the frame.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Coffins of the Brave: Lake Shipwrecks of the War of 1812, archaeologist Kevin J. Crisman and his fellow contributors examine sixteen different examples of 1812-era naval and commercial shipbuilding. They range from four small prewar vessels to four 16- or 20-gun brigs, three warships of much greater size, a steamboat hull converted into an armed schooner, two gunboats, and two postwar schooners. Despite their differing degrees of preservation and archaeological study, each vessel reveals something about how its creators sought the best balance of strength, durability, capacity, stability, speed, weatherliness, and seaworthiness for the anticipated naval struggle on the lakes along the US-Canadian border. The underwater archaeology reported here has guided a new approach to understanding the events of 1812–15, one that blends the evidence in contemporary documents and images with a wealth of details derived from objects lost, discarded, and otherwise left behind. This heavily illustrated volume balances scholarly findings with lively writing, interjecting the adventure of working on shipwrecks and archaeological finds into the investigation and interpretation of a war that continues to attract interest two centuries after it was fought.

Book excerpt: A stolen library, an old adversary, a league of warriors lying in wait… When they receive a package from the Warden—the old-school Nazi whose hirelings nearly killed Grant in Arizona—Grant's surprised it's not a bomb but a job offer. The Warden holds the clue to a stash of Italian artworks stolen by the Nazis, which includes a thousand-year-old library stolen from the Jews of Rome. Trouble is, the stash has been tapped to raise money for the Gladio, a secret anti-Communist army established after WWII. D.A. talks the Bone Guard into taking the job, but how do you know whom to trust when the Nazis write your paycheck? The Gladio leader wants his treasure, the Bone Guard wants to save the library—and the Warden's not saying what she's really after. A young historian helps them sort out the clues, from a ruined town to a buried Flak Tower, but they're completely unprepared for what they find… When betrayal comes, even Grant can't brace for impact. The Bone Guard returns in their most dangerous adventure yet!

This book was released on 1995-05-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this seminal book, Christopher Johnson writes a full-scale study of the rise and decline of industrialization in the Bas-Languedoc region of France. Working within a broad 200-year frame, Johnson examines the process of how and why a successful industrial region transformed itself to agriculture. Johnson is primarily interested in de-industrialization, which sets him apart from previous historians who have studied regions only in terms of the growth toward industrialization.

Book excerpt: Attention is a key part of thinking clearly and productively, and yet we pay very little attention to attention itself. If you see someone lying injured in the middle of the road, for example, your attention would go to that person but, if a bright pink dog wandered past at the same time, your attention would automatically stray to the dog. That is precisely the weakness of attention - it is pulled to the unusual. How much attention do we pay to the usual? So, what can we do about it? Instead of waiting for attention to be pulled towards something unusual, we can set out frameworks for 'directing' our attention in a conscious manner. Just as we can decide to look north, west or even south-east, so we can set up a framework for directing our attention, and that's where Edward de Bono's 'six frames' come in. Each frame is a direction or method in/with which to look, based on a different shape - triangle, circle, heart, square, diamond, slab. Today we are literally surrounded by information and it has never been so easy to obtain. Yet, information itself is not enough; it's how we look at it that really counts. Using the 'six frames' technique is the key to extracting real value from the masses of facts and figures out there and, like all de Bono's techniques, it is simple, effective and will utterly change the way you interpret information.

Book excerpt: Racial profiling has been a controversial topic in civil right's dialogue for centuries beginning with the Negro Free Registry in the slave era, emerging again with the 1980s 'War on Drugs, ' and climaxing with the 2000 'War on Terror.' This study offers an in-depth overview of the evolution of racial profiling in the United States throughout these diverse periods. It specifically offers an in-depth examination of how mainstream and Black press newspapers framed the phenomena of 'racial profiling' three years before and after the September 11 terrorist attacks. It offers readers a peek at the various types of frames, ethnic groups, and sources that journalists chose in their quest to cover the issue. Moreover, it defines, compares, and contrasts the differences in Black and Mainstream media's coverage of the issue and the unique purpose that each media form serves. Finally, this work provides a brilliant example of a frame analysis carried to its full extent

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frames of Protest brings together important empirical research and theoretical essays by leading sociologists, political scientists, and media specialists that focus on social movement frames and framing practices. Frames are new ways of understanding political and social relations that emphasize injustice and the need for change. As such, they are crucial for the development of social movements and protest. Frames of Protest is the only book to focus exclusively on this major research perspective in social movement and protest studies. Thirteen chapters encompass the major themes in the framing perspective to offer a state-of-the-art review. Three chapters present evidence for the determining influence of framing in social movement mobilization. Next, framing activities by the state and the mass media are analyzed. Then, two research reports examine the effect of political opportunities on framing-in Poland under the Communists and in New York City's ethnic politics. Several chapters by leading theorists present a lively debate about the relationship of ideologies to collective action frames. The book closes with a hands-on discussion about analyzing textual materials and interview transcripts to do frame analysis that lends itself to longitudinal and cross-case comparisons.

This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Danove presents a case frame grammar and lexicon for the Book of Revelation, with three major goals. He first provides a step-by-step introduction to case frame analysis, incorporating various adaptations and extensions to address the needs of the study of the Greek of the New Testament. He then supplies a comprehensive case frame grammar and description of the syntactic, semantic, and lexical requirements that each predicator imposes on its complements. He finally generates a case frame lexicon that guides the interpretation and translation of each predicator occurrence in its grammatical contexts. Danove begins with the method of analysis and description, with an overview of case frame grammar, an analysis of the events grammaticalized by the predicators in the Book of Revelation, descriptions of the usages of these events, and further specification of these descriptions. He then provides illustrative examples of the predicators with each usage, discusses the distinctive grammatical characteristics of Revelation, sets forth the protocols for generating lexicon entries, and concludes with the case frame lexicon for predicators in the text of Revelation.
