Book excerpt: “The infantryman’s war is . . . without the slightest doubt the dirtiest, roughest job of them all.” He went in as a military history buff, a virgin, and a teetotaler. He came out with a war bride, a taste for German beer, and intimate knowledge of one of the darkest parts of history. His name is Dean Joy, and this was his war. For two months in 1945, Joy endured and survived the everyday deprivations and dangers of being a frontline infantryman. His amazingly detailed memoir, self-illustrated with numerous scenes Joy remembers from his time in Europe, brings back the sights, sounds, and smells of the experience as few books ever have. Here is the story of a young man who dreamed of flying fighter aircraft and instead was chosen to be cannon fodder in France and Germany . . . who witnessed the brutality of Nazis killing Allied medics by using the cross on their helmets as targets . . . and who narrowly escaped being wounded or killed in several “near miss” episodes, the last of which occurred on his last day of combat. Sixty Days in Combat re-creates all the drama of the “dogface’s” fight, a time that changed one young man in a war that changed the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Days in Europe: A Brief Comparative Review The following pages were written on the voyage home between Boulogne and New York for the purpose of preserving the fruits of my observations and as an omnibus letter to family and friends. A small edition was printed for private distribution. The demand for copies, however, exceeded the supply, hence the present edition, which is printed without material alteration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty Days in Europe and What We Saw There It seems to be necessary in issuing a new book to give some reason for its publication. This book is intended to convey an idea of what can be seen in Europe in the time indicated in its title while traveling by the ordinary methods, and with a fair degree of comfort, and covers a number of what seem to us very interesting subjects. It follows a similar work issued one year previous covering a trip through Cuba and Mexico, called "Spain's Lost Jewels," and which was so kindly received that the writer is encouraged to this second effort in the line of book making. Anyone contemplating a trip to Europe should allow at least two months for travel and sightseeing between the time of his landing and departure from the other side. This is hardly enough, but adding to this the time in getting started and crossing the ocean both ways, makes nearly three months, which is about as long a period as the ordinary business man feels like devoting to one season's vacation. Having this amount of time at our disposal, we followed the route indicated in these letters, and, in looking back, we hardly see how we could have done better unless we had taken more time. But if we had, the book would have probably been too big. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The monumental events in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union must be understood, Jan Van Oudenaren argues, in the context of a process of East-West détente begun in 1953 in the aftermath of Stalin's death. Van Oudenaren's comprehensive and timely study examines the development of Soviet-Western détente from the death of Stalin to the unification of Germany. In redefining détente as a process, rather than a code of conduct, Van Oudenaren looks to its origins in Soviet policy earlier than previously identified and analyzes both its history and character. His study explores the restoration of four-power negotiations in Germany and Austria in the mid-1950s, their subsequent breakdown in the Berlin crisis, their unexpected revival in 1990 in the form of "two plus four" talks on German unity, and the future of the Soviet Union as a European power. Among the key elements of détente discussed are diplomacy, particularly the role of summit conferences; cooperation among parliaments, political parties, and trade unions; arms control; economic relations; and links among cultural institutions, churches, and peace movements.
