Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Years With the Texas Rangers: 1875 to 1881 To write a true and complete history of the Texas Rangers as a state organization would require much time and an able historian. I am not a historian and could not undertake such an exhaustive treatise, which would fill several volumes the size of this, and it is only at the earnest solicitation of my chil dren, frontier friends, and old comrades that I have undertaken to write a short history of the rangers during the years I served with them. This little volume, then, has only the modest aim of pictur ing the life of the Texas Rangers during the years 1875-1881. I cannot, at this late date, recount in detail all the scouts that were made while I was in the service. I have, therefore, confined myself principally to the description of those in which I was a participant. Naturally, I remember those the best. Of the accuracy of this dictum I leave my readers to judge, for I have told my story just as I remember it, to the best of my ability and without any effort to embroider it with imagination. If I can inter est any of my old ranger comrades or even one little boy who likes to read about a real frontier, I shall feel amply repaid for all the labor and expense involved in preparing this work.

A year later, Jennings was thrown into the conflict between the native Spanish speaking Americans and the English speaking whites who came to settle the area. In an era of cattle thieving and terror, we follow Jennings through the southern border of Texas and find a vivid portrait of life in the late 19th century in one of the most lawless and hardest places to live in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas Rangers, Hostile Indians and Frontier Badmen in the wild South-West James Gillett was born in Austin, Texas and made his living as a cowboy before joining the Texas Rangers in Company D, assigned to the notorious West Texas borderlands. This was untamed country and besides dealing with outlaws, the rangers had numerous fights with hostile Indian tribes of the South-West including the Kiowa, Apaches and the Comanches. Gillett was involved in putting down the Mason County War and Horrell-Higgins Feud. In 1878, he was also involved in hunting for and the eventual killing of the Train Robber, Sam Bass, one of the infamous badmen of the Old West. There are adventures in quantity within the pages of this excellent book as Gillett recalls the pursuit of hostile Apaches who had attacked a stagecoach, how he killed outlaw Dick Dublin in a gunfight, became an El Paso deputy- marshal with gunfighter Dallas Stoudenmire and more. Since Sam Bass was a significant incident in James Gillett's long career as a ranger, an account of his career is also included in this unique Leonaur edition. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book excerpt: Luvenia "Lou" Roberts' memoirs are a complementary story to her husband's, Captain Daniel W. Roberts "Rangers and Sovereignty", and one of his Rangers of Company D, Sergeant James B. Gillett's book, "Six Years With the Texas Rangers: 1875-1881". Her story chronicles her adventures whether it was fishing for catfish and hunting beaver with her husband's Winchester in Indian country or being threatened at gun point during the "Mason County War". Told as only a woman who has ridden in buck boards and airplanes can tell the tales of taming the Texas frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors Bob Alexander and Donaly E. Brice grappled with several issues when deciding how to relate a general history of the Texas Rangers. Should emphasis be placed on their frontier defense against Indians, or focus more on their role as guardians of the peace and statewide law enforcers? What about the tumultuous Mexican Revolution period, 1910-1920? And how to deal with myths and legends such as One Riot, One Ranger? Texas Rangers: Lives, Legend, and Legacy is the authors’ answer to these questions, a one-volume history of the Texas Rangers. The authors begin with the earliest Rangers in the pre-Republic years in 1823 and take the story up through the Republic, Mexican War, and Civil War. Then, with the advent of the Frontier Battalion, the authors focus in detail on each company A through F, relating what was happening within each company concurrently. Thereafter, Alexander and Brice tell the famous episodes of the Rangers that forged their legend, and bring the story up through the twentieth century to the present day in the final chapters.
