Book excerpt: Beloved author Jackson Pearce brings her trademark humor and emotion to a compelling and hopelessly romantic story about how impossible fame and love can be on their own, much less together. Maybe everything they say about Vivi Swan is true. Maybe America's Sweetheart is all fluff and no substance. And maybe every guy she dates is fodder for her next breakup song. But session drummer Remy Young doesn't care. Touring with Vivi Swan means more money than he and his brother could ever earn on their own. And he's smart enough to keep himself away from drama. Then a bus mix-up forces Remy and Vivi to spend hours together, and he's surprised to discover that she's nothing like the rumors said. When she asks for his help writing her next song, he's immediately on board—for professional reasons, of course. Soon, it's clear that every variation of their song is just a different way to write a love letter, even as Remy wonders if he's setting himself up to be the next guy on her list of exes. And when Vivi's private life and public facade finally clash, a celebrity gossip blog threatens everything they've created together...

Book excerpt: "[A] long, beautiful, heart-breaking love letter to potential and possibilities and hope, to the pain we survive in youth and carry with us into adulthood."--NPR Book Reviews One week. That's all Jessie said. A one-week break to get some perspective before graduation, before she and her boyfriend, Chris, would have to make all the big, scary decisions about their future -- decisions they had been fighting about for weeks. Then, Chris vanishes. The police think he's run away, but Jessie doesn't believe it. Chris is popular and good-looking, about to head off to college on a full-ride baseball scholarship. And he disappeared while going for a run along the river -- the same place where some boys from the rival high school beat him up just three weeks ago. Chris is one of the only black kids in a depressed paper mill town, and Jessie is terrified of what might have happened. As the police are spurred to reluctant action, Jessie and others speak up about the harassment Chris experienced and the danger he could be in. But there are people in Jessie's town who are infuriated by the suggestion that a boy like Chris would be a target of violence. They smear Chris's character and Jessie begins receiving frightening threats. Every Friday since they started dating, Chris has written Jessie a love letter. Now Jessie is writing Chris a letter of her own to tell him everything that's happening while he's gone. As Jessie searches for answers, she must face her fears, her guilt, and a past more complicated than she would like to admit.

Even in this age of e-mail, faxes, and instant messaging, nothing has ever replaced the power of a love letter. Much the way light displays every color when passed through a prism, love letters express the spectrum of our emotions, offering a colorful glimpse into the soul of the writer, and of the writer's beloved. For passionate readers and lovers of words, a letter is irresistible. Internationally renowned collector David Lowenherz sifted through hundreds and hundreds of historical and contemporary epistles and selected the most ardent, witty, whimsical, sexy, clever, and touching letters for this inspiring collection. Unlike interviews or biographies, these letters give us marvelous insight into the lives of some of history's most famous lovers and provide intimate glimpses into the hearts of some whose fervent or amusing expressions of devotion will come as a great surprise. Book excerpt: Franz Kafka met Felice Bauer in August 1912, at the home of his friend Max Brod. Energetic, down-to-earth, and life-affirming, the twenty-five-year-old secretary was everything Kafka was not, and he was instantly smitten. Because he was living in Prague and she in Berlin, his courtship was largely an epistolary one—passionate, self-deprecating, and anxious letters sent almost daily, sometimes even two or three times a day. But soon after their engagement was announced in 1914, Kafka began to worry that marriage would interfere with his writing and his need for solitude. The more than five hundred letters Kafka wrote to Felice—through their breakup, a second engagement in 1917, and their final parting in the fall of that year, when Kafka began to feel the effects of the tuberculosis that would eventually claim his life—reveal the full measure of his inner turmoil as he tried, in vain, to balance his desire for human connection with what he felt were the solitary demands of his craft.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 15, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Anglistik), course: Seminar: Writing in the English Foreign Language Classroom, language: English, abstract: Every once in a while people fall in love. Unfortunately, there are many cases in which they do not admit their feelings to the woman or man they lost their heart to. People often are inhibited and cautious when it comes to express affection to the woman or man of choice. Sometimes they even let their chance slip, because they are afraid of embarrassment and negative feedback from the one they adore. An adequate alternative to a face-to-face confession is the love letter. Writing a love letter is a meaningful art and it offers a great possibility to reveal one’s affection for the receiver without evoking shameful situations and awkward moments that may hurt one’s own feelings. By writing creatively, using the right selection of words and good argumentation, a love letter can be more than just a declaration of love. They often relinquish a moment of mystery, excitement and surprise and many people keep them lifelong as their secret treasures. In fact, writing good love letters is a demanding task even for advanced students. It might take hours of practice, drafting and rewriting to create an emotional and inspirational love letter. This paper will be about teaching intermediate students in the English foreign language (EFL) classroom, how to write a love letter. It functions as a guide for teachers to help them structuring and planning their lessons on this topic. Furthermore, it provides adequate teaching methods and innovative ideas to effectively instruct students on their way to become successful love-letter writers. The paper will commence by introducing several pre-writing activities, which serve to prepare students before they get started with the major task. In addition, the stylistic devices and structural guidelines love-letter writing requires will be introduced. In the second step, the paper concentrates on love-letter writing itself. It explores the direct preparation necessary and offers useful hints concerning the teacher’s role in the writing phase. Finally, this paper illustrates a number of useful post-writing activities and evaluations methods in detail.
