Book excerpt: Two pugs have built a robot labrador to steal the world's tastiest bone. The story is set in the United Kakedom, an island bigger than Iceland and smaller than Greenland. It is a circular island containing four countries of exactly the same size – like four quarters of a cake. These countries are Eggland, Sconeland, Pieland and Waffles. The people who live there are called crumbs. The crumbs are ruled by a Queen and she is helped by her Prime Minister. At the time of this story the Queen's name is Cranberry and the Prime Minister's name is Mrs Cheese Sandwich. Cheese Sandwich is married to Ham, a writer. They have two pugs called Louie and Zucchie, adopted from a rescue home. Unknown to the Sandwiches, prior to meeting the pugs Louie made a promise to a lady pug; that he and Zucchie would give her the world's tastiest bone. The world's tastiest bone belonged to the Ancient Egyptian King, Pug Tootandfarten. It has been lent by the Egyptian Queen, Juniper, to the Museum of Bones in Eggdon, the capital city of Eggland. No pugs are allowed inside the museum, only labradors. Louie decides to build a robot labrador to steal the bone. The robbery is successful, but Queen Cranberry has ordered two hounds from the Dog Police to catch the thieves. If the bone is not returned to the Cairo Museum, Queen Juniper has threatened that Egypt will not sell the United Kakedom any Bogtrax toilet paper. The United Kakedom will be in the poop, as Egypt is the only manufacturer of toilet paper in the world. If the pugs are caught they face a trial, watched by the crumbs of the United Kakedom, and a prison sentence. If the pugs are found guilty Cheese Sandwich will lose her job, and the pugs will lose their home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ted Williams capped a storybook baseball career with a storybook ending, hitting a home run in his last at bat in the major leagues. That blast, on a dreary September 28, 1960, at Boston's Fenway Park, ushered in a post-playing career during which the Red Sox legend would become a first-ballot Hall of Famer just six years later. During his retirement, he maintained his longtime active assistance of the Jimmy Fund in its fight against cancer, encouraged youngsters at his Ted Williams Baseball Camp, and coached current and future big leaguers in Red Sox spring training. In 1969, he was named American League Manager of the Year; in 1991, he received a Presidential Medal of Freedom from George H.W. Bush; and in 1995, a Boston tunnel was dedicated in his honor. In one of his last appearances, Ted joined fellow nominees for baseball's All-Century Team at the 1999 All-Star Game at Fenway Park--creating an iconic, lasting image of the man known as "The Kid," the "Splendid Splinter," and "Teddy Ballgame."

The full scope and achievement of Knausgaard's monumental work is evident in this final installment of his My Struggle series. Grappling directly with the consequences of Knausgaard's transgressive blurring of public and private Book Six is a troubling and engrossing look into the mind of one of the most exciting artists of our time. Knausgaard includes a long essay on Hitler and Mein Kampf, particularly relevant (if not prescient) in our current global climate of ascending dictatorships.

Book excerpt: A stand-alone short story in the multi-award-winning Troubadours Quartet epic medieval thriller series 1157: Aquitaine. The wolves are coming! At midnight on Christmas Eve, while the blizzard blasts snow through every crack in the castle walls, Nici the Shepherd's Dog stands guard in the sheepfold. Beside him as usual are his pack and the flock they protect but this night is not usual at all. A small boy braves the snowy night, seeking the protection of his great friend while he is banned from his parents' quarters in the castle. Nici recalls other times and other dangers, his trials and failures, the reasons why he ran away with a young girl, now the little boy's mother. He would still give his life in a heartbeat for Lady Estela. And yet, on this snowy night, he cannot help her. So, while he waits and comforts Estela's son, he tells his own puppies the story of a dog's life. 'One just wants to sit down with Nici as he shares his story in that cozy sheepfold while the cold winds rage outside on Christmas Eve.' 5***** Award Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regina Rheda is a contemporary award-winning Brazilian writer whose original voice and style have won her many admirers. First World Third Class and Other Tales of the Global Mix presents some of her finest and most representative work to an English-speaking readership. Stories from the Copan Building consists of eight tales set in a famous residential building in São Paulo. The stories, like the apartment complex, are a microcosm of modern-day urban Brazil. They are witty, consistently caustic, and never predictable. Also in this volume is the poignant and often hilarious novel First World Third Class. It depicts young middle-class professionals and artists who, as opportunities in Brazil diminished, opted to leave their country, even if it meant taking menial jobs abroad. At the center of the narrative is Rita, a thirty-year-old aspiring filmmaker who migrates to England, and then Italy. She looks for work and love in all the wrong places, moving from city to city and from bed to bed. The last three stories in this collection also happen to be among the author's most recent. "The Enchanted Princess" is an ironic title for a postfeminist tale of a South American woman being wooed to marry an old-world gentleman who promises to take care of her every need. "The Sanctuary" concerns the living conditions of immigrant workers and farm animals. Equally piquant in nature, "The Front" deals with ecology, labor environments, and gender politics.
