Book excerpt: Six Polish Poets makes available to the English-language reader the poetry of the younger generation of poets who whose first collections (with one exception) have been published in the past decade. Unlike the poets of the previous generation who, in the period of new-found freedom after the fall of communism, adopted a highly individualistic, anarchic, sometimes brutal style, the poets represented here re-examine and experiment with traditional poetic forms, themes and cultural references in poems that are refined and witty, moving and informed, ranging across every aspect of human existence. This anthology is both thought-provoking and full of warmth and humanity, and while it cannot claim to be representative of contemporary Polish poetry as a whole, it nevertheless provides an insight into today's literary scene in Poland. Book excerpt: This anthology breaks new ground in the English speaking world by publishing translations of poems by Polish writers all under the age of forty five. It reflects the range of different writing practices that have flourished in various parts of Poland over the last fifteen years, and tries to acheive a balance between them. Practically all the work in this selection was written in the post-Communist period but in cultural historical terms it reflects the evolution of a sensibility that began to emerge in the mid 1980's when Polish poetry was being realigned contentiously with newly visible traditions of European and American writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This expanded edition of Postwar Polish Poetry (which was originally published in 1965) presents 125 poems by 25 poets, including Czeslaw Milosz and other Polish poets living outside Poland. The stress of the anthology is on poetry written after 1956, the year when the lifting of censorship and the berakdown of doctrines provoked and explosion of new schools and talents. The victory of Solidarity in August 1980 once again opened new vistas for a short time; the coup of December closed that chapter. It is too early yet to predict the impact these events will have on the future of Polish poetry." From Amazon.

Book excerpt: The six poets whose work is included in this collection have become known to the wider Czech readership in the past ten to fifteen years, despite the fact that they belong to two very different generations: the generation exiled by the totalitarian regime of pre-Velvet Revolution Czechoslovakia - whether from public literary life or from the country itself - and the younger generation which started publishing in the late 1990s. Both were faced with the task of mending the broken continuity of Czech poetry, reclaiming the sources of its inspiration - whether it may be the subconscious and dreams, the undercurrents of human relationships, or closely observed everyday objects and situations which acquire a poetic and ontological significance - and, ultimately, with the task of restoring the very medium of poetic expression, language itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating new study of modern Polish verse in performance, offering a major reassessment of the roles of poets and poetry in twentieth-century Polish culture. WhatÕs in a voice? Why record oneself reading a poem that also exists on paper? In recent decades, scholars have sought to answer these questions, giving due credit to the art of poetry performance in the anglophone world. Now Aleksandra Kremer trains a sharp ear on modern Polish poetry, assessing the rising importance of authorial sound recordings during the tumultuous twentieth century in Eastern Europe. Kremer traces the adoption by key Polish poets of performance practices intimately tied to new media. In Polish hands, tape recording became something different from what it had been in the West, shaped by its distinctive origins behind the Iron Curtain. The Sound of Modern Polish Poetry reconstructs the historical conditions, audio technologies, and personal motivations that informed poetic performances by such luminaries as Czes_aw Mi_osz, Wis_awa Szymborska, Aleksander Wat, Zbigniew Herbert, Miron Bia_oszewski, Anna Swir, and Tadeusz R—_ewicz. Through performances both public and private, prepared and improvised, professional and amateur, these poets tested the possibilities of the physical voice and introduced new poetic practices, reading styles, and genres to the Polish literary scene. Recording became, for these artists, a means of announcing their ambiguous place between worlds. KremerÕs is a work of criticism as well as recovery, deploying speech-analysis software to shed light on forgotten audio experimentsÑfrom poetic Òsound postcards,Ó to unusual home performances, to the final testaments of writer-performers. Collectively, their voices reveal new aesthetics of poetry reading and novel concepts of the poetic self.

Book excerpt: Six poets. Eighty-one poems. They offer more than just a view of the Vietnamese-American war seen from the inside: they are a slice, albeit a living slice, of Vietnam's culture and history enduring one of the most horrific and longest wars of the twentieth-century. They are, in a sense, to borrow a phrase from Philip Gambone, a long love poem to ... its people. For that reason it is more than a record of war: it's a record of human struggle in the face of extremity, of love, life, and death. There is in each of the poems an unmistakable quality of heart, a heart that has never failed to feel the deep pain of its fellow human beings. And it is that quality of heart--that deep pain--that gives the poets and their friends the abiding strength to struggle, to overcome, and to endure. --Nguyen Ba Chung.

Book excerpt: This volume emerged from the conference "Polish Literature Since 1989" held at the University College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies. It shows how the profound political and economic transformation that has taken place in Poland since the end of communism in 1989 has affected literary culture and literary scholarship, such as: changing conceptions of Polish nationhood and identity * the impact of European integration (since 2004) * the effects of migration * revised conceptions of the foreign or the marginal, and new understandings of what is understood by emigre or emigrant literature * sensitivity to issues of gender and sexual identity, as well as the impact of feminism and queer studies * the huge impact of revived interest in the Jewish heritage, in Holocaust memory, and in Polish-Jewish relations.
