Its single lawman, Deputy Sheriff Percy Whittaker, known as Perc, didn’t have to deal with much lawbreaking other than the occasional drunk on a Saturday night. Until a drifter named Sam Logan rode into town looking for work. The first problem came when a rider from the Snowshoe ranch provoked a gunfight with Logan, and lost. He was followed to the grave by another rider from the same ranch looking for revenge. Both killings were deemed self-defense, but it rattled the peaceful community. But when a preacher comes to town to save souls and starts by knocking out three cowboys, Perc starts to wonder if he’s in over his head—or if Logan and the preacher might be working together.

Download or read book The Crossroads written by L. Ron Hubbard and published by Galaxy Press LLC. This book was released on 2010-06-21 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think you know what’s going on in the world? Think again. Long before Rod Serling took us into The Twilight Zone, L. Ron Hubbard brought us to The Crossroads—a place where thought-provoking twists and turns are delivered with plenty of wit and wisdom. Farmer Eben Smith is fed up with big government telling him how to run his life and his business. They pay him to bury his crops while folks starve in the streets, and he’s not going to take it anymore. He’s declaring his independence, loading up his fruits and vegetables, and heading for the city to wheel and deal. . . . But before he can trade in his turnips, Eben’ll have to deal with something bigger —a break in the space/time continuum. He’s at The Crossroads, where reality is turned upside-down and inside out. And before it’s over, he’ll turn his turnips into liquor, and the liquor into guns and gold, as he plunges into strange new worlds . . . finding ways to wreak havoc in all of them. The Crossroads first appeared in the February 1941 issue of Unknown Fantasy Fiction. By then Hubbard’s stature as a writer was well established. As author and critic Robert Silverberg puts it: he had become a “master of the art of narrative.” Hubbard’s editors urged him to apply his gift for succinct characterization, original plot, deft pacing and imaginative action to a genre that was new, and essentially foreign, to him—science fiction and fantasy. The rest is history. Also includes the fantasy adventures, Borrowed Glory, the haunting story of two immortals who wager on two mortals given a single day of love . . . a wager that leads to heartbreak and tragedy; and The Devil’s Rescue based on the legend of The Flying Dutchman, in which the sole survivor of a disaster at sea is “rescued” by the devil himself and finds that fate rests on a roll of the dice. “Amusing . . . a nostalgic delight.” —Publishers Weekly * An International Book Awards Finalists

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Patton lost his wife to lung fever two years ago. Now, suffering from lung fever himself and closer to eternity every day, he is traveling south through the mountains with his small son and daughter, hoping somewhere in this savage land he can find a good home for them before time runs out. When the two kids find an unconscious man, the three tend to his wounds, care for his horse, and load him into their wagon. Samuel finds a cache of money in the saddlebags of the man the children have named Mr. Black, and he is certain they have taken an outlaw under wing. When the man comes round, he tells them his name is Jess and he can guide them through the thoroughfare pass and on to the town of Hereford in Absaroka Valley, a cowman’s paradise in the mighty mountain range, where he was born. Against his better judgment, Samuel agrees. Only a stone’s throw from Hereford, Samuel is too exhausted to push on and so they make one last camp. It is a decision that nearly kills his daughter when a stampede runs through their camp that night. The Pattons find themselves taking refuge in the midst of the valley where ranchers have declared war on encroaching squatters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deadwood, Dakota Territory, was filled with luckless miners and diggers, as well as more than its share of lawlessness, and more often than not, there was nothing Marshal Fred Nolan and his two deputy marshals, Wentworth and Grubb, could do. So when a teen hustler, known as Gitalong because of his crippled leg, was hoorawed by a trio of Texas drovers, the law wasn’t called in. Besides, two strangers had come to Gitalong’s aid, confronting the drovers and forcing them to give Gitalong three silver dollars. While it was the most money the teenager had ever had, he knew it would only bring him trouble. He was right. The three Texans returned with even more men, and another confrontation with the two strangers takes place that ends in one of the Texans being killed, and Gitalong trying unsuccessfully to give the money back. This time, though, Marshal Fred Nolan and his two deputies see the fight and order the Texans out of town, but not before Grubb recognizes Tevis Blankenship, a trail driver with a tough reputation. Still afraid, Gitalong heeds the advice of others and leaves town on a coach, which ends up crashing and injuring Gitalong badly. Meanwhile, Marshal Nolan’s job just got harder, because he needs to be ready to escort a bullion coach through his area, always a dangerous job.

Book excerpt: "It's 1914 at the Potter home in the rural community of Crossroads, which serves as family residence, doctor's office, boarding house, and telephone exchange. For Grandpa, a crusty, retired hellfire-and-brimstone minister; his daughter Miss Eva, widow of a country doctor (and practicing medicine without a license); Eva's imaginative and restless teenage daughter Nell; handyman Lomax; and schoolteacher/switchboard operator Lavinia, life is pretty humdrum-that is, until a train derails just outside of town. News comes fast and furiously through the telephone exchange. Neighbors call to report buffaloes in their cornfields, African chieftains stalking through their yards, and cowboys and Indians roaming the neighborhood. And then comes word that the train was carrying Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. As the household works itself into a tizzy, a refugee from the wreck shows up-assumed at first to be Buffalo Bill himself. Instead, he turns out to be a cowboy/musician with the unlikely name of Fargo Montana, who dresses in costume for his role as Buffalo Bill's stand-in. The folks in the Potter home are disappointed that their guest isn't the celebrity they thought, but they soon find that Fargo's presence forces them to confront their long-held dreams-Nell to live in the city, Eva to go to medical school, Grandpa to become a Wild West cowboy, Lavinia to find the man of her dreams, and Lomax to return to his roots in show business. Fargo has a dream, too-to start a jazz band. Fargo and Lavinia fall in love in a song, and as the curtain falls, everyone is setting out on bold new ventures."--Publisher's website.
Book Synopsis Humanity at the Crossroads by : Garth J. Hallett
Download or read book Humanity at the Crossroads written by Garth J. Hallett and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity now stands at a crossroads between a world of unimaginable wonders and one of unprecedented terrors. The choices we make now will determine not only the shape of our future, but whether there will be, for us as a species, a future at all. But, if we are at such a crossroads, are we even properly aware of it? Governed by instincts rooted in the past, are we prepared to see what we need to see, to do what we need to do? As technology evolves, so must we; but how and in what direction? Are we unavoidably fated to trade liberty for security in ridding the world of terror and war? Humanity at the Crossroads attempts to answer all of these critical questions, while opening the dialogue for further debate. It arrives, in the process, at the startling conclusion that the very technology which threatens to destroy us, not merely its more favorable offshoots, is itself the catalyst for that better world we may yet hope to inhabit.

Book Synopsis Spaghetti Westerns at the Crossroads by : Austin Fisher
Download or read book Spaghetti Westerns at the Crossroads written by Austin Fisher and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What links Italian neorealism to Django Unchained, French comic books to Third-World insurgency, and Bollywood song-and-dance to Eastern Bloc film distribution? As this volume illustrates, the answers lie in the Spaghetti Western genre. As the reference points of American popular culture became ever more prominent in post-war Europe, the hundreds of films that make up the Italian (or 'Spaghetti') Western documented profound shifts in their home country's cultural outlook, while at the same time denying specifically national discourses. An object of fascination and great affection for fans, filmmakers and academics alike, the Western allitaliana arose from a diverse confluence of cultural strands, and would become a pivotal moment in cinematic history.Reappraising a diverse selection of films, from the internationally famed works of Sergio Leone to the cult cachet of Sergio Corbucci and the more obscure outputs of such directors as Giuseppe Colizzi and Ferdinando Baldi, this comprehensive study brings together leading international scholars in a variety of disciplines to both revisit the genre's cultural significance and consider its on-going influence on international film industries.
Download or read book Canyon Crossroads written by Dick Brown and published by Speaking Volumes. This book was released on with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite badgering by government officials, despite unwarranted accusations of being squatters, the canyon pioneers left their mark on this grand stage. They chiseled trails out of stubborn rock, discovered rich copper deposits below the rim, erected lodges on the rim, and advocated rail connections to the brink of the Grand Canyon to promote its tourism and mining potential. Monte Bridgestone – rugged, quiet, and trapped in a loveless marriage; his mining skills are no help in consoling a lonely wife. He fights government, sabotage, and greed, and then champions the safeguarding of this wondrous place. Kirby O’Brien – a hopeless romantic, his slender frame disguises his strength and endurance. First a miner, then a rancher, he is destined to share a golden opportunity with the most beautiful woman in northern Arizona. Sabrina Jaffa – a young divorcee, proud, pretty and sassy. In search of a new life, she operates under a veil of secrecy, riding like a man but wanting nothing to do with men, that is, until she uncovers a long-kept canyon secret. In time, the miners put down their picks and shovels and turned to mining the pockets of tourists rather than the pockets of copper hidden in red-stained rock walls. What they began, big corporations finished. What they cherished as their own, the federal government confiscated and protected for future generations. Canyon Crossroads, a historical novel, Book One in Under the Canyon Sky: is the story of the Grand Canyon pioneers. It is loosely based on forty years of research by the author. There are stories of lost gold, mine explosions, stagecoach rollovers, rockslides, nefarious business dealings, political ambitions gone awry, and a mysterious woman prospector. "Canyon Crossroads brings to life the intrigue and romance of pioneers at the Grand Canyon amidst governmental pressures and a backdrop of natural wonders. Highly recommended!" —Dr. Gary Fogel, Author and Adjunct Professor at San Diego State University.
