Book excerpt: Aerodynamic, propulsion, and mass models for a generic, horizontal-takeoff, single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) configuration are presented which are suitable for use in point mass as well as batch and real-time six degree-of-freedom simulations. The simulations can be used to investigate ascent performance issues and to allow research, refinement, and evaluation of integrated guidance/flight/propulsion/thermal control systems, design concepts, and methodologies for SSTO missions. Aerodynamic force and moment coefficients are given as functions of angle of attack, Mach number, and control surface deflections. The model data were estimated by using a subsonic/supersonic panel code and a hypersonic local surface inclination code. Thrust coefficient and engine specific impulse were estimated using a two-dimensional forebody, inlet, nozzle code and a one-dimensional combustor code and are given as functions of Mach number, dynamic pressure, and fuel equivalence ratio. Rigid-body mass moments of inertia and center of gravity location are functions of vehicle weight which is in turn a function of fuel flow. Shaughnessy, John D. and Pinckney, S. Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicle modeling and control challenges. Such vehicles are characterized by unstable non-minimum phase dynamics with significant coupling and low thrust margins. Recent trends in hypersonic vehicle research are summarized. To illustrate control relevant design issues and tradeoffs, a generic nonlinear 3DOF longitudinal dynamics model capturing aero-elastic-propulsive interactions for wedge-shaped vehicle is used. Limitations of the model are discussed and numerous modifications have been made to address control relevant needs. Two different baseline configurations are examined over a two-stage to orbit ascent trajectory. The report highlights how vehicle level-flight static (trim) and dynamic properties change over the trajectory. Thermal choking constraints are imposed on control system design as a direct consequence of having a finite FER margin. The implication of this state-dependent nonlinear FER margin constraint, the right half plane (RHP) zero, and lightly damped flexible modes, on control system bandwidth (BW) and FPA tracking has been discussed. A control methodology has been proposed that addresses the above dynamics while providing some robustness to modeling uncertainty. Vehicle closure (the ability to fly a trajectory segment subject to constraints) is provided through a proposed vehicle design methodology. The design method attempts to use open loop metrics whenever possible to design the vehicle. The design method is applied to a vehicle/control law closed loop nonlinear simulation for validation. The 3DOF longitudinal modeling results are validated against a newly released NASA 6DOF code.

Book excerpt: The many iterations needed to explore a design space in the conceptual design process preclude the use of time-consuming RANS CFD for all but a few flight conditions. This research focuses on identifying the level of fidelity needed to adequately predict the aerothermodynamic characteristics of hypersonic vehicles. Three tools with differing levels of fidelity - CBAERO, Cart3D, and Kestrel - were used to analyze the Generic Hypersonic Vehicle (GHV) at the design condition of Mach 5.85 and an off-design condition of Mach 4.5. The results are representative of the different design tools but are not definitive due to the mesh size in Kestrel being limited by the available computational resources. The results obtained show a large difference in the unstart threshold predicted by inviscid and viscous CFD: 21° vs 11.75° degrees for Mach 5.85 and 14.5° vs 6.5° for Mach 4.5. Despite that difference, all three methods showed reasonable agreement for CL, CD, and CM across the entire range. The medium-fidelity method, Cart3D, was also capable of matching Kestrel's mass capture below the unstart threshold. The heat flux from the reference temperature method with Cart3D overestimated the heat flux on the bottom surface and underestimated heat flux on the top surface compared to Kestrel. At low angles of attack it appears to provide a heat flux estimate with a natural factor of safety, but it risks leading to overdesigning at higher angles of attack. The high-fidelity method, Kestrel, only showed significant differences from the lower fidelity methods in the unstart threshold, L/D, mass capture after unstarting, and heat flux at high angle of attack.

Book excerpt: A nonlinear simulation is developed to model the longitudinal motion of a vehicle in hypersonic flight. The equations of motion pertinent to this study are presented. Analytic expressions for the aerodynamic forces acting on a hypersonic vehicle which were obtained from Newtonian Impact Theory are further developed. The control surface forces are further examined to incorporate vehicle elastic motion. The purpose is to establish feasible equations of motion which combine rigid body, elastic, and aeropropulsive dynamics for use in nonlinear simulations. The software package SIMULINK is used to implement the simulation. Also discussed are issues needing additional attention and potential problems associated with the implementation (with proposed solutions). Salas, Juan and Lovell, T. Alan and Schmidt, David K. Book excerpt: An integrated computational model of a generic hypersonic vehicle was developed for the purpose of determining the vehicle's performance characteristics, which include the lift, drag, thrust, and moment acting on the vehicle at specified altitude, flight condition, and vehicular configuration. The lift, drag, thrust, and moment are developed for the body fixed coordinate system. These forces and moments arise from both aerodynamic and propulsive sources. SCRAMjet engine performance characteristics, such as fuel flow rate, can also be determined. The vehicle is assumed to be a lifting body with a single aerodynamic control surface. The body shape and control surface location are arbitrary and must be defined. The aerodynamics are calculated using either 2-dimensional Newtonian or modified Newtonian theory and approximate high-Mach-number Prandtl-Meyer expansion theory. Skin-friction drag was also accounted for. The skin-friction drag coefficient is a function of the freestream Mach number. The data for the skin-friction drag coefficient values were taken from NASA Technical Memorandum 102610. The modeling of the vehicle's SCRAMjet engine is based on quasi 1-dimensional gas dynamics for the engine diffuser, nozzle, and the combustor with heat addition. The engine has three variable inputs for control: the engine inlet diffuser area ratio, the total temperature rise through the combustor due to combustion of the fuel, and the engine internal expansion nozzle area ratio. The pressure distribution over the vehicle's lower aft body surface, which acts as an external nozzle, is calculated using a combination of quasi 1-dimensional gas dynamic theory and Newtonian or modified Newtonian theory. The exhaust plume shape is determined by matching the pressure inside the plume, calculated from the gas dynamic equations, with the freestream pressure, calculated from Newtonian or Modified Newtonian theory. In this manner, the pressure distribution along the vehicle after body expa...

Book excerpt: These three volumes entitled Advances in Hypersonics contain the Proceedings of the Second and Third Joint US/Europe Short Course in Hypersonics which took place in Colorado Springs and Aachen. The Second Course was organized at the US Air Force Academy, USA in January 1989 and the Third Course at Aachen, Germany in October 1990. The main idea of these Courses was to present to chemists, com puter scientists, engineers, experimentalists, mathematicians, and physicists state of the art lectures in scientific and technical dis ciplines including mathematical modeling, computational methods, and experimental measurements necessary to define the aerothermo dynamic environments for space vehicles such as the US Orbiter or the European Hermes flying at hypersonic speeds. The subjects can be grouped into the following areas: Phys ical environments, configuration requirements, propulsion systems (including airbreathing systems), experimental methods for external and internal flow, theoretical and numerical methods. Since hyper sonic flight requires highly integrated systems, the Short Courses not only aimed to give in-depth analysis of hypersonic research and technology but also tried to broaden the view of attendees to give them the ability to understand the complex problem of hypersonic flight. Most of the participants in the Short Courses prepared a docu ment based on their presentation for reproduction in the three vol umes. Some authors spent considerable time and energy going well beyond their oral presentation to provide a quality assessment of the state of the art in their area of expertise as of 1989 and 1991.

Book excerpt: The conceptual design of hypersonic air vehicles relies on computational methods to produce estimates of aerodynamic, structural, thermal protection, and propulsion design requirements. Solving the design optimization problem presented by these competing requirements using traditional low-fidelity vehicle models and flow simulations is inadequate because these models represent the underlying physics of the combined disciplines poorly. In order to assess the potential of using physically-accurate flow simulation tools and high-resolution geometry modeling tools in the conceptual design stage, the sensitivity of a hypersonic air vehicle's lift-to-drag ratio to geometric variations was calculated using a computational framework developed for this project. The framework is unique in its integration of modern design tools such as parametric vehicle geometry models, Eulerian flow simulations with automated volumetric mesh generation and refinement, Kriging response surface generation, and global sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity of a hypersonic vehicle's lift-to-drag ratio to changes in two planform parameters was completed and demonstrated the capabilities of the framework to perform global sensitivity analyses. When the design space was extended to nine geometric parameters, the initial application of the framework failed and the results of the global sensitivity analysis were inconclusive.

Book excerpt: The geometric data of the generic hypersonic vehicle configuration included body definitions and preliminary grids for the forebody (nose cone excluded), midsection (propulsion system excluded), and afterbody sections. This data was to be augmented by the nose section geometry (blunt conical section mated with the noncircular cross section of the forebody initial plane) along with a grid and a detailed supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) geometry (inlet and combustor) which should be merged with the nozzle portion of the afterbody geometry. The solutions were to be obtained by using a Navier-Stokes (NS) code such as TUFF for the nose portion, a parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) solver such as the UPS and STUFF codes for the forebody, a NS solver with finite rate hydrogen-air chemistry capability such as TUFF and SPARK for the scramjet and a suitable solver (NS or PNS) for the afterbody and external nozzle flows. The numerical simulation of the hypersonic propulsion system for the generic hypersonic vehicle is the major focus of this entire work. Supersonic combustion ramjet is such a propulsion system, hence the main thrust of the present task has been to establish a solution procedure for the scramjet flow. The scramjet flow is compressible, turbulent, and reacting. The fuel used is hydrogen and the combustion process proceeds at a finite rate. As a result, the solution procedure must be capable of addressing such flows. Narayan, Johnny R. Unspecified Center...

Book excerpt: Seen as a possible way of making space access more affordable, air-breathing hypersonic vehicles have been studied sporadically over the last five decades as the technical advances necessary for their development were missing. New technology has brought a renewed interest in the research area, as demonstrated by the successful flights of NASA's X-43A in April and November of 2004. Air-breathing hypersonic vehicles are characterized by their unique design, incorporating a supersonic combustion ramjet engine located beneath the fuselage. This esoteric configuration results in strong coupling between the thrust and pitch dynamics of the vehicle, which in combination with flexible effects and static instability make the vehicle a challenging application for control. For a particular model of the longitudinal dynamics of an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle, a nonlinear high fidelity simulation is developed. Tables are generated which provide a static mapping of the states/inputs to the aero-dynamic forces for the purpose of creating bounds to be used in future nonlinear control development. The tables also allow the calculation of the aerodynamics forces and moments to be replaced by a table look-up with multidimensional interpolation. A linear controller is designed using a linearized model derived numerically from the nonlinear simulation about a specific trim condition. The controller is designed to track given reference commands in velocity, angle-of-attack, and altitude using a LQR technique. The gains are tuned to achieve the performance objectives without violating the input constraints. The controller is then tested on the nonlinear simulation and functions adeptly. Anti-windup control is added to allow the input constraints to be considered in the formulation of the linear controller. In doing so the gains of the linear controller can be increased without manually keeping the inputs within their constraints through tuning of the weighting matrices. This allows both the speed of the closed loop response and that of the reference trajectories to be increased, resulting in better performance.
