This book analyses the stories of white fathers, men who were positioned as key players in the plans to assimilate Aboriginal people by 'breeding out the colour'. The plan to 'breed out the colour' ascribed enormous power to white sperm and white paternity; to 'elevate', 'uplift' and disperse Aboriginality in whiteness, to blank out, to aid cultural forgetting. The policy was a cruel failure, not least because it conflated skin colour with culture and assumed that Aboriginal women and their children would acquiesce to produce 'future whites'. It also assumed that white men would comply as ready appendages, administering 'whiteness' through marriage or white sperm. This book attempts to put textual flesh on the bodies of these white fathers, and in doing so, builds on and complicates the view of white fathers in this history, and the histories of whiteness to which they are biopolitically related.

Book excerpt: The Australian bush country is as rugged as any terrain in the world. Two American cowpokes, Sterl and Red, found this out when they signed to drive a mammoth herd 3,000 miles across rough country.—No cattlemen had ever done this before. They knew they were in for a hard time, but they didn’t count on hostile aborigines who knew some strange and unusual ways to kill a man. Sterl and Red found themselves with a lot more at stake than just a cattle drive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Recall: Collections and Recollections is a memoir by Robert Henderson Croll. Croll was an Australian author, lyricist, bushwalker, and civic servant. Excerpt: "Central Australia, where I have now been five times, was long a place of desire. When my Sister Elizabeth and her husband, Albert Watts, went to live at Quorn, a township sitting at the foot of the Flinders Range in South Australia, I paid her two visits. They quickened my wish to see more of the remarkable country on the edge of which Quorn is placed. That was some forty years ago. The first, a Spring journey, left two vivid memories. One is of the seemingly endless fields of young wheat which made much of South Australia so beautiful just then; the other is of a shooting trip to which we were invited. Our hosts were two young men of the district, tall and powerful, sons of a German settler. The conveyance was a light open cart with one fixed seat which held the two brothers. Behind them, a board rested its ends on the sides of the cart and was secured to the front seat by a stout rope."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning three generations, Capricornia tells the story of Australia's north. It is a story of whites and Aborigines and Asians, of chance relationships that can form bonds for life, of dispossession, murder and betrayal. 'Capricornia will always be one of the greatest of Australian novels, a defining work in the search for what it is, or was, to be Australian.' Australian Book Review Spanning three generations, Capricornia tells the story of Australia's north. It is a story of whites and Aborigines and Asians, of chance relationships that can form bonds for life, of dispossession, murder and betrayal. In 1904 the brothers Oscar and Mark Shillingsworth, clad in serge suits and bowler hats, arrive in Port Zodiac on the coast of Capricornia. they are clerks who have come from the south to join the Capricornian Government Service. Oscar prospers, and takes to his new life as a gentleman. Mark, however, is restless, and takes up with old Ned Krater, a trepang fisherman, who tells him tales of the sea and the islands, introduces him to drink, and boasts of his conquests of Aboriginal women - or 'Black Velvet', as they are called. But it is Mark's son, Norman, whose struggles to find a place in the world embody the complexities of Capricornia itself. 'My Capricornia is a hymn book written in adoration of Australia ... the Land of the Unshackled Southern Cross, the Australian earth itself, out of a passionate love of which alone can a true Australian Nation grow.' Xavier Herbert

Book excerpt: This revised edition of the Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography brings together the entries from the original three volumes, published in 1990, 1992 and 1996. The Dictionary spans the period from the early British and French explorers of the Northern Territory coast to the mid 1990s and aims to provide a broad reflection of life in the Territory rather than focusing on eminent public figures. In some cases this has meant that some subjects are included about whom relatively little is known. Authors come from the widest possible cross-section of the community and there is a considerable range of writing styles. The principal interest of the volume is the Northern Territory. In all cases, the Territory experience of subjects, however eminent they might have been elsewhere, is thus the focal point of entries. This volume is available on CD (ISBN 9780980384697) and in this limited paperback edition.

Book excerpt: "I Never Thought I Would Lose a Case," says Guy T. Saperstein, recalling his life fighting for the underdog and for social change in his autobiography Civil Warrior: Memoirs of a Civil Rights Attorney. He very rarely did. In his more than 25 years of pioneering civil rights law, Saperstein's firm successfully prosecuted the largest race, sex and age-discrimination lawsuits in American history. His firm defeated Denny's Restaurants in the infamous race discrimination case. His biggest case -- a 23-year sex discrimination lawsuit against State Farm Insurance -- ended when, State Farm finally admitted, "We were like Robert Duran in the ring with Sugar Ray Leonard, and we said, 'No mas!'" Saperstein is well known for his colorful, take-no-prisoners style in and out of court. Civil Warrior reflects that bold style, making intricate points of law accessible, and revealing how justice really works in America today. Book jacket.
