Download or read book Complimenting Behavior and (Self-)Praise across Social Media written by María Elena Placencia and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume focuses on complimenting behavior, including the awarding of (self-)praise, as manifested on social media. These commonplace activities have been found to fulfil a wide range of functions in face-to-face interaction, discoursal and relational amongst others. However, even though the giving of compliments and praise has become a pervasive practice in online environments, it remains a largely underexplored field of study within pragmatics. Self-praise is an activity that appears at the present time to be rapidly gaining ground online, and the various functions it performs clearly also need further investigation. The different contributions to this ground-breaking volume – 12 in total – aim to address this gap in research by exploring and shedding light on a number of aspects of these phenomena in a range of languages and language varieties. New socio-digital contexts are examined, supported in some cases by social networking sites not previously studied in complimenting behavior research. These include Facebook, Instagram, Renren, Twitter, as well as web forums, message boards and live text commentary.

Book Synopsis Self-Praise Across Cultures and Contexts by : Chaoqun Xie
Download or read book Self-Praise Across Cultures and Contexts written by Chaoqun Xie and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the extent to which self-praise is acceptable in both offline and online contexts, across different genres, platforms, and cultural backgrounds. The data analyzed encompass both naturally occurring (daily conversation as well as institutional talk) and elicited (experiments and interviews) types, and are explored at both quantitative and qualitative levels to offer a relatively systematic and comprehensive inquiry into self-praise as social (inter)action. Contributors to this book not only draw on traditional politeness theories but are also informed by social psychology, interactional sociolinguistics, CMC, and (multimodal) discourse analysis. They are inspired by pragmatics but also go beyond to ground their studies within locally situated cultural contexts, most of which are under-presented in the current academic world. Their efforts substantiate the fact that self-praise is most worthy of intensive analytic attention. This book appeals to students and researchers in the field and contributes to the way communication is facilitated through different ways of deploying linguistic and interactional resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Layered with physical, emotional, and relational tension, Through Blurred Vision brings forth the life of a young man that was given a diagnosis that appears in 0.0001% of births. As a result, Kurt Pangborn’s life was encompassed in darkness. Yet despite the daunting realty of this diagnosis’ limitations, Pangborn sought the true light of life in his darkness, and found a message that extends past human reason. Kurt Pangborn’s Through Blurred Vision inspires readers to turn their pain into praise and apply the “Three P’s” of higher living. Residing in a world that is broken and filled with trials, Pangborn’s writing encourages others to seek God’s guidance—because He wants your life to rise above the inequity and to magnify his glory. Mankind’s greatest problem is separation from Christ, which Pangborn uniquely presents in Through Blurred Vision as the gospel and game plan for every man, women, son, and daughter.

Book Synopsis Jerome's Commentaries on the Pauline Epistles and the Architecture of Exegetical Authority by : Andrew Cain
Download or read book Jerome's Commentaries on the Pauline Epistles and the Architecture of Exegetical Authority written by Andrew Cain and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late fourth and early fifth centuries, during a fifty-year stretch sometimes dubbed a Pauline renaissance of the western church, six different authors produced over four dozen commentaries in Latin on Paul's epistles. Among them was Jerome, who commented on four epistles (Galatians, Ephesians, Titus, Philemon) in 386 after recently having relocated to Bethlehem from Rome. His commentaries occupy a time-honored place in the centuries-long tradition of Latin-language commenting on Paul's writings. They also constitute his first foray into the systematic exposition of whole biblical books (and his only experiment with Pauline interpretation on this scale), and so they provide precious insight into his intellectual development at a critical stage of his early career before he would go on to become the most prolific biblical scholar of Late Antiquity. This monograph provides the first book-length treatment of Jerome's opus Paulinum in any language. Adopting a cross-disciplinary approach, Cain comprehensively analyzes the commentaries' most salient aspects-from the inner workings of Jerome's philological method and engagement with his Greek exegetical sources, to his recruitment of Paul as an anachronistic surrogate for his own theological and ascetic special interests. One of the over-arching concerns of this book is to explore and to answer, from multiple vantage points, a question that was absolutely fundamental to Jerome in his fourth-century context: what are the sophisticated mechanisms by which he legitimized himself as a Pauline commentator, not only on his own terms but also vis-à-vis contemporary western commentators?

Book excerpt: "There are some things when we miss them in life, it won't matter what else we gained. There are some things when we gain them, it won't matter what else we missed... and no greater wisdom can we discover than this, and the greatest wisdom is to discover our purpose in life! The day you discover God's purpose for your life, you will cease to be using your your efforts but His. You will no longer use your strength but His. You will no longer be using your wisdom in what you are doing but His. You will no longer use your approach to issues of your life but His, for you have discovered His assignment for your life! Your assigmnent in life is never far from you, but it could be far from your focus. Always change your focus to discover what is God's purpose for your life! Wealth is not your purpose, it is a slice of it. Fame is not your purpose, it is a slice of it. Power is not your purpose, it is a slice of it and until you discover your purpose, the slices will keep distracting you from God's plan for your life! Let no attraction; either the attractions of money, fame or power distract you from pursuing your purpose in life! The attractions that cannot distract you at the early stage of your struggles in discovering your purpose in life, will serve you at its later stage! Trying to do like everybody else might not be your purpose. Trying to do what people like may not be your purpose. Trying to do as you are told may not be your purpose. Trying to to impress the people around you, may not be your purpose. Discovering your purpose in life will give you a picture of where your tomorrow will be. It will give you the right mentality to achieving a breakthrough in life. Because whenever the journey of your struggles starts to bog down, you cannot breakthrough with the wrong mentality that sees you from a picture of where you found yourself. You can only go forward with a right mentality of the picture of where your tomorrow will be. And when tomorrow comes and you see yourself in great victory, you will then realise that what is needed is not to thank God for answered prayers but to apologise to Him for the times we go about in behaviours that shows He was not faithful to us! A feeling in actions and activities that shows He might not really have cared about our situation!" I came to the point that I planned to stop the show for the day. "My dear listeners, always have a positive attitude to whatever you are going through in life and keep to the path and action that will carry you to your victory in life. You can't get an answer by following a formula half way. You can't get an answer by following a formula the wrong way. The formula ensures that we do away with anything that is stopping us from achieving our victory in life. Most times, it is the presence of some little things that is denying the coming of some wonderful things in our lives... HE CHANGES PEOPLE'S LIVES THROUGH HIS MOTIVATIONAL

Attribution Theory: An Organizational Perspective serves as a primary sourcebook of attribution theory as it relates to management and organizational behavior. The text provides an integrated explanation of the role and function of attribution theory in the organization. This important new book contains original empirical research relating attributions to leader evaluations, reactions to information technologies, management of diverse work groups, achievement, and executive succession and power. The contributors are from a variety of disciplines including management, psychology, education, educational psychology, and sociology.
Book Synopsis Understanding and Working with Shame by : Carsten René Jørgensen
Download or read book Understanding and Working with Shame written by Carsten René Jørgensen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-26 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the pivotal role of shame in a wide range of mental disorders and as a driving force in societal polarization and escalating conflicts between nations and population groups. Exploring the phenomenology of one of the most vulnerable and painful of human emotions, shame, Jørgensen dives deep into its many facets and the ways in which it manifests in mental illnesses and everyday life. Delving into an in-depth discussion of the differentiation between the moral and ethical feelings of guilt and shame, he presses the need to distinguish between constructive and destructive feelings of shame. He examines how shame permeates societal and cultural expectations, on both individual and collective levels. Solution-centric in its approach, the author not only discusses the destructive feelings of shame particularly common among individuals with more severe mental disorders, but also offers specific advice to therapists on how to deal with it. The book will be an essential read for psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, philosophers, and anyone wanting to understand the power of shame in our lives.

Book Synopsis Identity Revisited and Reimagined by : Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta
Download or read book Identity Revisited and Reimagined written by Sangeeta Bagga-Gupta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to other studies on identity, this book takes its point of departure in the complexities that characterize and shape both individuals and societies – past and present. Its chapters challenge demarcated fields of study and conceptions of identity as gender, identity as functional disability, identity as race, and identity as, or based upon language groupings. The contributions take a social practices perspective in their exploration of the performance, living and doing of identity positions across time and space. Many of the contributions take an intersectional stance and the majority report upon empirically driven studies that examine the ways in which micro-level analyses of naturally occurring human communication contribute to our understanding of identification processes. Specifically, they study the ways in which more recent dialogical and social theoretical-analytical frameworks allow for attending to the complexity and dynamics of identity processes; the ways in which institutional settings, media settings, community of practices and affinity spaces provide affordances and obstacles for different types of identity positions; and the ways in which shifts in identity positions can be traced across time and space.
