Book Synopsis Women and the State in Modern Indonesia by : Susan Blackburn
Download or read book Women and the State in Modern Indonesia written by Susan Blackburn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first study of the kind, Susan Blackburn examines how Indonesian women have engaged with the state since they began to organise a century ago. Voices from the women's movement resound in these pages, posing demands such as education for girls and reform of marriage laws. The state, for its part, is shown attempting to control women. The book investigates the outcomes of these mutual claims and the power of the state and the women's movement in improving women's lives. It also questions the effects on women of recent changes to the state, such as Indonesia's transition to democracy and the election of its first female president. The wider context is important. On some issues, like reproductive health, international institutions have been influential and as the largest Islamic society in the world, Indonesia offers special insights into the role of religion in shaping relations between women and the state.
Book Synopsis The Indonesian Crisis by : Aris Ananta
Download or read book The Indonesian Crisis written by Aris Ananta and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2002-12-05 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the impact of the 1997-99 economic crisis on human development in Indonesia, especially in 1998, its worst year. Based on the definition used by the UNDP, human development is analysed as covering human capital (education and health) and purchasing power. In this book, the concept of human capital is broadened to include freedom from fear, health, education, and migration. The first part of the book discusses the economic situation in Indonesia. The second elaborates on what happened to human capital during the crisis and the third part examines its effects on purchasing power. Because human development does not occur in a vacuum, the fourth part discusses some emerging issues in Indonesia. The book concludes with some thoughts on people-centred development, which may contribute to more sustainable development than the development concept that simply pursues high economic growth. With this people-centred development, growth rates of about 3 to 4 per cent are adequate, as long as Indonesia achieves success in human development.
Book Synopsis Indonesia Assessment by : Gavin W. Jones
Download or read book Indonesia Assessment written by Gavin W. Jones and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1997-06-16 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia's population, the fourth largest in the world, is expected to pass the 200 million mark in 1997. It has sustained high rates of economic growth over the past two decades. This has undoubtedly been related to its success in moderating earlier high rates of population growth, and to its significant accomplishments in human resource development. This volume is therefore timely. It presents a comprehensive evaluation of the current situation and assesses future prospects.

Book Synopsis Children, Youth, and Participatory Arts for Peacebuilding by : Ananda Breed
Download or read book Children, Youth, and Participatory Arts for Peacebuilding written by Ananda Breed and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-14 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how participatory arts-based approaches can help children and youth contribute to peacebuilding within post-conflict contexts and to their communities. Cultural forms of storytelling through visual arts, drama, music, and dance can help to enhance post-conflict community well-being, social cohesion, and conflict prevention. However, in the planning and implementation of these arts-based projects, children and youth are often marginalised in decision-making processes. Drawing on cases from Kyrgyzstan, Rwanda, Indonesia, and Nepal, this book demonstrates the benefits of participatory action research with children and youth to inform education curricula and policies for sustaining peace. Showing how artforms can be adapted to meet the needs of children and youth, the book emphasises the need to scale up arts-based peacebuilding initiatives and leverage for greater policy enactment from the bottom up. It is also an excellent example of South–South learning, advocating for a local approach to engage with arts-based methodologies and peacebuilding. This book will be of interest to researchers across the applied arts, sociology, anthropology, political science, peacebuilding, and international development. Practitioners and policymakers would also benefit from the book’s recommendations for the implementation of successful arts-based research projects and interventions.
