Book Synopsis Sitting in Darkness by : Peter Schmidt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitting in Darkness explores how fiction of the Reconstruction and the New South intervenes in debates over black schools, citizen-building, Jim Crow discrimination, and U.S. foreign policy towards its territories and dependencies. The author urges a reexamination not only of the contents and formal innovations of New South literature but also its importance in U.S. literary history. Many rarely studied fiction authors (such as Ellwood Griest, Ellen Ingraham, George Marion McClellan, and Walter Hines Page) receive generous attention here, and well-known figures such as Albion Tourgee, Frances E. W. Harper, Sutton Griggs, George Washington Cable, Mark Twain, Thomas Dixon, Owen Wister, and W. E. B. Du Bois are illuminated in significant new ways. The book's readings seek to synthesize developments in literary and cultural studies, ranging through New Criticism, New Historicism, postcolonial studies, black studies, and "whiteness" studies. This volume posits and answers significant questions. In what ways did the "uplift" projects of Reconstruction-their ideals and their contradictions-affect U.S. colonial policies in the new territories after 1898? How can fiction that treated these historical changes help us understand them? What relevance does this period have for us in the present, during a moment of great literary innovation and strong debate over how well the most powerful country in the world uses its resources?
Book Synopsis When I Sit In Darkness by : Tabbie Chamberlain
Download or read book When I Sit In Darkness written by Tabbie Chamberlain and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-12-04 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the darkness, the battle we fight can be very detrimental, very costly. It isn’t how long or how short the battle is, but how well equipped we are for fighting the enemy. “The night is long, the battle sore, No time to stop and tally score. Keep fighting on, don’t give up ground, For soon you’ll wear the victor’s crown.” Our trust must be in God’s ability to see us through the darkest times, not in His desire to let us escape the night. “When I Sit In Darkness” is a beacon that will cast a light into your world, giving you strength for today and hope for tomorrow. From its pages, I trust that you can feel the Spirit of the Lord as the words sink deep into your soul, and bring assurance that you will survive your darkness.
Book Synopsis Those Who Sit in Darkness by : Donald J. Richardson
Download or read book Those Who Sit in Darkness written by Donald J. Richardson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a boy growing up in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, and Kansas, I had no objective conception of evil. We were practicing Roman Catholics in our family, so our consideration of evil was focused on self: urges which could lead to sin-urges which themselves constituted sin. Evil was what lay in the barely hidden recesses of our personalities. There was no objective correlative of evil-the church taught we were evil embodied. Thus, we never regarded others as evil or even bad. What would have happened had we ever encountered anyone who was truly evil? Surely out there were people who couldn't be justified or whose behavior couldn't be rationalized away. What would happen when we met?

We devour them with a fervor once reserved for novels and short stories, following our favorite actors and directors the way earlier generations followed favorite writers. To create this book, each student in my Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class selected one film from the National Film Registry, which chooses up to 25 “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films” each year for inclusion in the Library of Congress. Each student then wrote a review, discussing what worked and didn’t work; choices made by screenwriters, directors, and cinematographers; and personal reactions to particular scenes or the film as a whole. The goal was to create readable reviews that treated film with the same level of respect afforded to other works of art.

Book Synopsis Mark Twain in China by : Selina Lai-Henderson
Download or read book Mark Twain in China written by Selina Lai-Henderson and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835–1910) has had an intriguing relationship with China that is not as widely known as it should be. Although he never visited the country, he played a significant role in speaking for the Chinese people both at home and abroad. After his death, his Chinese adventures did not come to an end, for his body of works continued to travel through China in translation throughout the twentieth century. Were Twain alive today, he would be elated to know that he is widely studied and admired there, and that Adventures of Huckleberry Finn alone has gone through no less than ninety different Chinese translations, traversing China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Looking at Twain in various Chinese contexts—his response to events involving the American Chinese community and to the Chinese across the Pacific, his posthumous journey through translation, and China's reception of the author and his work, Mark Twain in China points to the repercussions of Twain in a global theater. It highlights the cultural specificity of concepts such as "race," "nation," and "empire," and helps us rethink their alternative legacies in countries with dramatically different racial and cultural dynamics from the United States.
