Book excerpt: The shrub-steppe landscape of the Columbia Basin has been the target of agricultural and urban development, and the resulting fragmentation and degradation has led to the disappearance of unique arid mesohabitats. In central Washington, the sandy lowland habitats resembling desert-scrub, which under natural conditions are characterized by a shrub-and-sand mosaic, have become increasingly degraded by humans directly (e.g., flooding, agriculture) or indirectly (e.g. cheatgrass introduction). These habitats have unique community assemblages with species adapted to the sandy substrates and unobstructed matrix between shrubs. While much conservation literature focuses on the loss of shrubsteppe habitat, there has been little research on the effects of loss, fragmentation, and degradation of sandy desert-scrub in the Columbia Basin on small reptile inhabitants. The sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus graciosus), an obligate resident of these sandy habitats, serves as a potential model organism to document the effects of desert-scrub loss and degradation. Compared to historical sightings prior to 1980, scant observations of S. graciosus within the last decade may be a sign that this species might be disappearing from its Washington range. In this study, I aim to assess whether the sagebrush lizard is still present in much of its original range in Washington, and to determine which aspects of their habitat correlates with population density. Sandy desert-scrub habitats that are historically known to have or were capable of having sagebrush lizards in Washington and Oregon were chosen as field sites during the summer and early autumn of 2016. Landcover statistics, such as shrub cover and grass cover, and habitat characteristics including wildfire history were determined for use as potential correlates for the rate of sagebrush lizards encountered in each site. Landcover was quantified via supervised classification using aerial photographs, and model accuracy was verified by comparing transect samples from the field. Multidimensional scaling and analyses of similarity were performed to determine which sites formed groups that were dissimilar to others, and similarity percentages were used to quantify the degree to which each habitat factor contributed to site dissimilarity. In only 6 out of the 16 sites were sagebrush lizards detected during standard search surveys. In Washington, of the 7 surveyed sites with sagebrush lizard sightings within the past 30 years, only 2 (29%) had detectable individuals. There were no differences between sites where sagebrush lizards were present and absent unless sites within 100 m of a crop field were classified separately, whereupon all five of these sites then fell within one out of two groups with 60% similarity. Percent grass cover was the strongest factor contributing to group differences, with less grass and more open sand found in sagebrush lizard-present sites. Also, sagebrush lizard-absent sites had histories of wildfire. The need to separately classify otherwise suitable habitat near agriculture (and did not have sagebrush lizards) indicates additional negative influences affecting this species presence, since not incorporating this sole variable masks any differences among sites. In general, I infer that wildfire, cheatgrass invasion, and landscape development all have reduced suitable habitat for sagebrush lizards and likely explains their absence in their historic range. Given that the remaining pristine sandy desert-scrub habitats are now fragmented and few in number in the state of Washington, I infer from my results that there is very real cause for concern for the viability of this species in the state. If the challenge this species is facing is representative of other arid endemics, then the widespread changes to the shrub-steppe and desert-scrub landscapes in the Western USA provide many research opportunities in conservation ecology.

Book excerpt: The Dunes Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus - DSL) is a highly cryptic, habitat specialist that shows a preference for environments comprised of large wind-blown sand dune complexes and dense arrays of shinnery oak (Quercus harvardii). This species occupies a narrow range in the Monahans Sandhills of Texas and the Mescalero Sands of New Mexico and like many habitat specialists, they are sensitive to disturbances within their environment. Conservation of this species relies upon precise assessments of the occurrence, abundance, and the trends in both metrics for this lizard. The standard method for detecting the DSL, visual encounter surveys (VES), was utilized to estimate the probability of detection, across sites that had varying degrees of reported suitability. Three separate VES methodologies were analyzed: 1) plot size: 200m x 200m; survey duration: 15 minutes, 2) plot size: 400m x 400m; survey duration: 60 minutes, and 3) plot size: 200m x 200m; survey duration: 30 minutes. The probability of detection, for S. arenicolus, was compared to two more commonly detected species, Uta stansburiana and Aspidoscelis marmoratus. The minimum number of surveys, needed to reliably detect these species, was then calculated from detection estimates. A total of 1,135 individual lizards were recorded, 12 of which were S. arenicolus. The mean detection probability for U. stansburiana = 0.38, followed by A. marmoratus = 0.28, and finally the DSL = 0.13 to 0.19. Less surveys were needed to be 95% confident that a lizard was detected, if that lizard had a higher probability of detection. Results of the study indicated that while VES may be suitable for many common species of lizards, it may not be the most efficient method for accurately determining presence of rarer species of lizards (i.e., the DSL). This could indicate that a more intensive survey methodology (i.e., pitfall traps) may be needed when trying to make reliable occupancy or abundance estimates.

The goal of my dissertation research was to determine the effects of landscape fragmentation on a lizard community in the Mescalero-Monahans shinnery sands, New Mexico and the extent to which conservation efforts might protect biodiversity in this ecosystem. My research relied heavily on data collected from a large-scale spatially-replicated comparative study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of landscape fragmentation as a result of oil and gas development on the dunes sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus). Results from analysis of lizard community structure indicate that fragmented sites are less diverse than non-fragmented sites. In particular, two species are found in lower density and occupancy in the fragmented locations (Holbrookia maculata and Sceloporus arenicolus). Analysis of landscape configuration at the scale of a trapping grid indicated that sand dune blowout shape and size differed between fragmented and non-fragmented locations. Differences in landscape pattern were associated with reduced lizard diversity. Because of this association between lower diversity and altered landscape pattern, extensive alterations to landscape pattern may cause disassembly at the ecosystem level. The maintenance of existing landscape pattern may be important to the maintenance of diversity in this ecosystem. Evaluations of habitat use patterns of the lizards in this community demonstrate that a few species have narrow preferences for certain habitats. In particular, H. maculata, Phrynosoma cornutum, and S. arenicolus all demonstrated narrow habitat use patterns. Effect size of fragmentation for each species indicated that the same three species showed a large effect when comparing their average abundances between fragmented and non-fragmented locations. Thus species that are most likely to benefit or be harmed by landscape fragmentation are those with the most specific habitat requirements. Umbrella species represent one of many approaches to conservation using surrogate species. I used data on ants, beetles, small mammals, lizards, and endemic species to test the use of the dunes sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus) as an umbrella for endemism and biodiversity of the Mescalero-Monahans shinnery sands ecosystem. I applied a comparative approach at three spatial scales to examine how conservation practices at different scales may affect biodiversity and endemism in this ecosystem. At the largest scale, the frequency of occurrence for endemic species increased though no other patterns emerged because S. arenicolus was present at all sites and there were no relationships between relative abundances of S. arenicolus and the other taxonomic groups. At the smallest scale, both beetle species richness, diversity, and endemic species richness were higher in the presence of S. arenicolus. To protect biodiversity in this ecosystem, conservation efforts should focus on protection at the scale of the species distribution rather than on the small-scale placement of individual well pads.
