Book excerpt: Abstract: Artificial reefs (ARs) have been used around the globe for a number of years with the goal of enhancing local fish populations, species diversity and fishing opportunities for commercial and recreational fishers. However, central to the problem of quantifying AR productivity for mobile species is knowing when and for how long they are resident to the AR, and connectivity with adjacent natural habitats. To address this, 45 Kelp Bass (KB), Barred Sand Bass (BSB) and California Sheephead (SH) were monitored using acoustic telemetry on Wheeler North Artificial Reef (WNAR), and an additional 20 individuals were tagged at three adjacent natural rocky reefs near San Clemente, California. SH exhibited significantly higher site fidelity (proportion of days detected; 74 ± 27%) than KB (45 ± 38%) and BSB (30 ± 26%) to WNAR, however, BSB exhibited seasonal residency patterns. Additionally, within WNAR, fish displayed seasonal movement patterns characteristic of spawning behavior. Finally, all fish displayed residency to the reef on which they were tagged, and only 13.3% of all tagged fish were detected on a reef other than the tagging reef. Taken together, the long-term residency and site attachment behavior displayed by the three species examined here suggest that WNAR is serving as satisfactory habitat for these species by providing sufficient prey resources, and that WNAR is providing suitable habitat that meets important life history needs, such as spawning, thereby producing additional fish biomass to the area that would not have been created otherwise.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Artificial reefs have been deployed throughout the worlds oceans to act as habitat and fishing enhancement tools. To expand current research on the role of artificial reefs in the marine community, ordination and multivariate regression methods were used here to analyze survey data of natural and artificial reefs. The reefs, located in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) and on the West Florida Shelf (WFS), had been previously surveyed from 2004 to 2015 using remote operated vehicle and stationary video techniques. This study tested the hypothesis that similar functional roles are accounted for at both natural and artificial reef sites even if species composition varies. Secondly, it examines the role of environment and fisheries in determining the assemblages. Artificial reefs tended to host communities that were as biodiverse as natural reefs, although not necessarily composed of the same species. Results of an ordination confirmed that as the classification was broadened from the level of species, to family, to functional group, the assemblages on each reef type (natural vs. artificial and NGOM vs WFS) appeared more similar. Dominant groups were present at all levels of classification and included the families Lutjanidae and Carangidae, as well as functional groups Red Snapper and Small Reef Fish. Both natural and artificial reefs tended to be dominated by one of the following: Lutjanidae, Carangidae, or Small Reef Fish, although a continuous gradient was found across the extremes of natural versus artificial reefs. Generalized Additive Models were developed to examine the influence of reef type, location, environment and fishing intensity covariates. Results indicated that for both natural and artificial reefs, the abundance of families and functional groups can be influenced by environmental factors. In both cases, there is strong spatial autocorrelation suggesting connectivity with neighboring reefs.

It was therefore the purpose of this study to compare the fish communities associated with an operating oil and gas platform, two artificial reef configurations, and the WFGB. We sought to identify species composition at each site; to estimate the fish biomass/density associated with each site; to determine the effects of side, depth, and distance from each site on fish biomass. However, little is known about how fish communities develop in temperate regions once a new reef is deployed, how they compare to adjacent natural reefs, and how these communities are influenced by season. Therefore, SCUBA video surveys were conducted over a 13-year period (1999-2012) at four unpublished artificial reef sites, three published artificial reef sites of varying ages, and two natural reef sites to assess the impacts of ecological succession and seasonality on species richness, diversity, evenness, fish density, and community structure. Season and reef age had significant effects on diversity and community structure at the unpublished sites, while season alone accounted for these trends at the published sites. Black seabass and tomtate dominated reef fish community structure at the published sites, while economically valuable species, such as groupers and snappers, were more abundant at the unpublished and natural reef sites. These results suggest that fish communities develop quickly at new artificial reefs (i.e., within the first year post-deployment) and that fishing pressure on publicly known reefs may obscure or even prevent community succession.

Book excerpt: Movement patterns and space use by mature fishes are critical in determining the effectiveness of marine reserves in conserving spawning stock biomass and/or providing biomass to adjacent fisheries through 1spillover2. Home range sizes, activity patterns, site fidelity and habitat preferences were determined for acoustically-tagged snappers and groupers using a rigorously-calibrated array of omnidirectional hydroacoustic receivers deployed in the diverse coral reef environments of a no-take marine reserve (NTMR) network in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. An individual-based localizing tendency model of reef fish movement was parameterized from fine-scale acoustic telemetry data and integrated into a Spatial Management Performance Assessment (SMPA) simulation model for reef fish populations developed to quantitatively evaluate performance of no-take marine reserves in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. Spatially-explicit SMPA models were parameterized for three overfished stocks in the lucrative snapper-grouper fishery: red grouper (Epinephelus morio), black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci), and mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis). SMPA models were used to evaluate the impacts of a variety of life histories, movement strategies and speeds, and management regulations upon long-term stock sustainability, as measured by annual changes in spawning potential ratio (SPR), and long-term stock productivity, as measured by annual changes in fisheries yield-in-weight per recruit (Yw/R). Under assumptions of constant regional fishing pressure, constant recruitment, and 1realistic2 fish movement, SMPA simulation runs from initial conditions in 2000 suggested that by 2014, the Tortugas NTMR network should function to restore red grouper populations to 30% SPR, a Federal management benchmark for sustainability. Mutton snapper were the most mobile of the species investigated; if mutton snapper movements are ignored, their population is predicted to attain 30% SPR by 2014, but given 1realistic2 mobility, they may not attain this target by 2021 without additional protections. Black grouper are currently fished at over 9 times sustainable levels. SMPA simulations suggest coupling an increase in minimum size at capture of 20 6 25 cm with NTMR implementation would result in substantial short term losses in yield, but would restore both black grouper and mutton snapper populations to 30% SPR by 2021 and lead to increased long-term yields. Although marine reserve sites are often chosen opportunistically, these findings strongly suggest that reserve designs (e.g. proper sizes and configurations) must take into account the scales and patterns of movement exhibited by the exploited stocks they are intended to protect. These modeling efforts also suggested reserves are not a panacea; in order to promote sustainability for severely depleted stocks, they must be accompanied by an overall reduction in fishing capacity. Although important questions remain concerning the movements of reef fish in response to habitat and density dependent processes, our analyses of realistic reef fish behaviors suggest that the NTMRs of the Dry Tortugas promote substantial gains in SPR, promoting long-term stock sustainability and enhanced egg production. Increased rates of movement diminish these benefits, but may also mitigate short-term losses in yield associated with NTMR establishment.

The abundance of fish fluctuated with the seasons The species diversity of this fish community was low (H' = 0.3-10), one species (Coryphopterus nicho/si) comprising more than 80% of the individuals present Four species of rockfishes ( Sebastes caurinus, S. ma/iger, S. me/anops, and S. pinniger) and three species of benthic fishes (Hexagrammos decagrammus, Jordania zonope, and Artedius spp.) were also common. Experimental communities were established on ten identical artificial reefs made of cement blocks. Two series of reefs, built six months apart on sand 10 m away from the natural reef, tested the effects of seasons on community development. A third series, built in direct contact with the natural reef, examined the effects of distance and isolation on community development In each series a species equilibrium (approximately 6 species) was reached within six months The specific composition of the artificial reefs was similar to that of the natural reef, although species other than Coryphopterus nicho/si were more abundant Both juveniles and adults of all species were present, except for the rockfishes, which were represented only by young individuals. Tagging indicated that the benthic species remained permanently on the reefs, whereas a yearly turnover in rockfishes occurred The intensity of interactions between species was estimated by measuring shifts in habitat use on the artificial reefs. Only Sebastes me/anops showed consistent shifts in its space use in response to changes in the density of other species Only two of these shifts appeared to be the result of interspecific competition. Interactions between species, with the exception of S. me/anops had little effect on the spatial distribution of fish within the reefs. I examined the significance of the patterns of similarity between communities inhabiting identical habitats. High similarity values are usually interpreted as indicating the equilibrium status -- that is communities structured primarily by interspecific competition -- of a community, whereas low values are usually interpreted in the opposite direction -- i.e non-equilibrium communities structured by mechanisms other than interspecific competition (mostly stochastic events). This was tested using a randomization test. The null hypothesis of the test was that random colonization from the surrounding habitats was sufficient to explain the community structure on the artificial reefs. Six additional reefs (one third the original size) were built to test the effects of habitat size on community structure. The observed values on the reefs did not differ significantly from the null values, indicating that mechanisms, such as competition, were not required to explain the structure of the community. Habitat size had a strong effect, and the interpretations of previous studies were re-examined in light of this finding.
