Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir William Flower Although the complete manuscript of this volume was placed in the hands of the editor before the publication of the late Mr. C. J. Cornish's Life of Sir William Flower (in 1904), yet the present writer was aware that such a work was in progress, and that it would deal with the social and personal rather than with the scientific side of Sir William's career. Consequently it was decided at an early period of the work to concentrate attention in the present volume on the latter aspect of the subject; as indeed is only fitting in the case of a biography belonging to a series specially devoted to men of science. An incidental advantage of this arrangement is that the writer has been able in the main to confine himself to the discussion of topics with which he is more or less familiar, rather than to attempt to chronicle events and episodes to which he must of necessity be a stranger, and to attempt an appreciation of a fine character for which he is in no wise qualified. It will be obvious from the above, that any references in the text to earlier biographies do not relate to Mr. Cornish's Volume. Book excerpt: Sir William Garrow was born in Middlesex, England in 1760. He entered the legal profession and became the dominant figure at Old Bailey - London's Central Criminal Court - from 1783 to 1793. Later on, he was a Member of Parliament, a Solicitor-General, an Attorney-General, and, finally, a judge and a lawmaker within the English Common Law Tradition. Aside from BBC1 TV's prime-time drama series Garrow's Law, the story of Sir William Garrow's unique contribution to the development of English law and Parliamentary affairs is little known by the general public. This book tells the real story of the man behind the drama. Garrow dared to challenge the entrenched legal ways and means. His 'gifts to the world' include altering the relationship between judge and jury (the former had until then dominated over the latter in criminal trials), helping to forge the presumption of innocence, rules of evidence, and ensuring a general right to put forward a defense using a trained lawyer. He gave new m

What are the encompassing issues museum face regarding how they acquire, keep and work with their collections? Museum Collection Ethics discusses the complexities inherent in preserving and interpreting the extraordinary range of culturally significant objects entrusted to museums. The book presents an encompassing look at every aspect of the intellectual and stewardship duties museums by definition assume. The differences between ethics, laws, customs, and expectations are discussed. They are not synonymous. Ethics vary widely and are fluid. Essential factors include: Defining a museum as an ethical pursuit The role of museum governing authorities regarding ethics The ethics of collection authority: who is responsible for collection truths How museums collect and how ethics influences that activity The ethics of assuring collection authenticity The ethical access to collections, be it physical or digital Ethics and conservation Exhibition ethics The ethics of collection removals be they voluntary or involuntary This is the first book devoted solely to the ethical concerns museums face regarding their collections.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the myths, folklore and botany behind over 70 British wildflowers. From hedgerows to meadows, wildflowers can be found throughout our green and pleasant land. In this book, journalist and garden writer Rosamond Richardson traces the history and myths behind each flower to discover the fascinating ways in which the plants were used. Discover which flower used as a medieval lie-detector to test the innocence of suspected criminals, or stuffed in the shoes of Roman centurions to prevent damage to their feet as they marched. From periwinkles, beloved of Chaucer, and the oxlips and ‘nodding violet’ growing in the forest of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the book celebrates the important role wildflowers have played in literature, as well as their uses in food and medicine, and the history, myths and tales behind each species. The nineteenth-century poet John Clare wrote, ‘I love wildflowers (none are weeds with me)'. This book is a celebration of the bountiful history behind Britain’s beloved wildflowers and is perfect for anyone with an interest in gardening, history or the natural world.

B., F. R. S., LL. D., D. C. L., Late Director of the Natural History Museum, and President of the Royal Zoological Society: A Personal Memoir Much of Sir William's work in life is its own record, more especially the lasting monuments in the cases of the Natural History Museum and in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons. But his character and charm in social and family life were such that any memoir of him would be incomplete and one-sided were an account of him in these aspects entirely omitted. To Mr. L. Fletcher, Mr. G. A. Bou lenger, Mr. Charles F agan, Secretary of the Natural History Museum; Mr. J. W. Clark, Registrary of Cambridge University; to the mem bers of Sir William F lower's family, and especially to Lady Flower, the writer is more particularly indebted for assistance and information. But each and every one of the late Director's friends have most readily contributed their recollections when asked, with expressions of warm regard for his memory. An estimate of Sir William's great and prompt service to the better understanding of the facts of evolution, at a time when the knowledge of these facts was confined almost entirely to specialists, will be found on page 57, and in chapter v., pp. 64-65 and 66-68. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of Daniel Defoe's greatest adventure novels has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards. Novels: "Robinson Crusoe" – Defoe's most famous novel tells the story of a man's shipwreck on a desert island for thirty years and his subsequent adventures. "Colonel Jack" – Colonel Jack follows an orphaned boy from a life of poverty and crime to colonial prosperity, military and marital imbroglios, and religious conversion, driven by a problematic notion of becoming a "gentleman." "Captain Singleton" – an adventure story that covers a traversal of Africa and taps into the contemporary fascination with piracy. "Moll Flanders" – The titular heroine appears as a whore, bigamist, and thief, commits adultery and incest, and yet manages to retain the reader's sympathy. "Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress" – The novel follows the adventures of a young woman from wealth, to prostitution, to freedom. "The Consolidator" – In this satirical novel, which mixes fantasy with political and social satire, Defoe's narrator travels to the moon. "Memoirs of a Cavalier" – This novel is set during the Thirty Years' War and the English Civil War. It is presented as a military journal of the Wars in Germany and England. "The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" – The sequel to "Robinson" describes how Crusoe traveled back in Bedford. Biography: Daniel Defoe by William Minto Daniel Defoe (1660-1731), was an English writer, journalist, and spy, most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is noted for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, and he is considered one of the founders of the English novel.
