Though young and from a different station in society, she is the sunshine of his soul. Yet it's hard for Mina to know if she is only dazzled by Walter's flattery. When she meets charming William, her heart is challenged. Then, one windy morning in the lake country, Walter meets Charlotte. Passion and promises collide as all must decide the course for their futures.

Book excerpt: The Lady of the Lake marked the pinnacle of Walter Scott's popularity as a poet, with record-breaking sales and ecstatic reviews which helped spread his fame far beyond Britain. It also inspired thousands to flock to Loch Katrine in the Trossachs to see for themselves the isle where the banished James of Douglas and his daughter Ellen take refuge, and where the mysterious knight, James Fitz James, arrives and sets in motion a chain of events which have far-reaching consequences for them all. A fictional work set during the reign of James V and featuring an astonishing range of themes, from political conflict, feud and mystery to love, loss and reconciliation, The Lady of the Lake is a key work of the romantic movement which swept Europe by storm in the early nineteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE, was a Scottish playwright, novelist and poet who became the first English-language author to be internationally celebrated within their own lifetime. Although he wrote extensively, he was by profession an advocate and judge, and continued to practice alongside his writing career. Scott was fascinated by the oral tradition of the Scottish borders, with its poetry, folklore and legend, and he collected stories throughout his youth and as a young man, almost obsessively. Scott's friend, James Ballantyne, had founded a printing press in 1796, and had published much of Scott's early work, including the Lay of the Last Minstrel which firmly established Scott' position in the Scottish literary tradition, and that of English literature as a whole. Scott was by now printing regularly with the Ballantynes and convinced them to relocate their press to Edinburgh and became a partner in their business. In 1813 Scott was offered the post of Poet Laureate, but turned the offer down and the position was taken by Robert Southey. Until now he had predominately written poetry however he became interested in the novel form despite its comparative unpopularity for a supposed aesthetic inferiority. Owing to this he published his first novel, Waverley, anonymously, in 1814. Its success encouraged several more novels, all of which were published under "Author of Waverley" as a means of piggybacking the success of Waverley and because Scott feared his traditional father would disapprove of such a trivial pursuit as novel writing. Scott came to be known as the "Wizard of the North" for his writing, and among literary circles it was an open secret that he was the author of these novels. In 1815 the Prince Regent, George, dined with him as he wished to meet the "Author of Waverley." By 1825 a banking crisis was crippling the nation and the Ballantyne printing company went under with Scott left with debts of 130,000 (approx. 10mil in 2014). His pride kept him from accepting financial aid (even from his admirer, King George) or declaring himself bankrupt. He resolved to continue writing until he could pay his debts. Compounding these unfortunate circumstances was the death of his wife in 1826. However, he maintained his enormous literary output until 1831 by which point his health had begun to fail and he died on September 21st 1832. At his death he was still in debt, the continuing sales of his work ensured that all debt was discharged shortly after he died.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ivanhoe follows Wilfred of Ivanhoe, part of one of the few Saxon families at a time when English nobility was dominated by the Normans, who is out of favour with his father for his allegiance to the Norman king, Richard the Lionheart. The gripping storyline beautifully captures the 12th century tensions between Saxons and Normans, Nobility and Commonality and Jews and Gentiles, with a whole host of well-known characters from Robin Hood to Friar Tuck. REVIEWS: A curious exemplification of the power of a single book for good or harm is shown in the effects wrought by Don Quixote and those wrought by Ivanhoe. The first swept the world's admiration for the meiaeval chivalry-silliness out of existence; and the other restored it. MARK TWAIN[Ivanhoe] may have been badly wounded in combat - only to recover and save the day - but he has never been sliced up like this. SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY This is exactly what is needed in order to rescue Sir Walter Scott. ALEXANDER McCALL SMITH. I applaud this new, shorter version of Ivanhoe which makes this wonderful novel, once so popular, accessible to a new generation of readers who will be able to enjoy its classic blend of history and romance. PROFESSOR GRAHAM TULLOCH, Editor of the Edinburgh Edition of the Waverley novels Professor David Purdie's meticulous adaption has made Sir Walter Scott's classic much more accessible to the modern reader... Purdie has managed to conserve Scott's masterly evocation of the 'sights, colours and sounds' of the Middle Ages. EDINBURGH LIFEBACK COVER: Fight on, brave knights. Man dies, but glory lives! A mediaeval tale of political intrigue, tumultuous romance, family machinations and a country's struggle for peace, Ivanhoe is one of Sir Walter Scott's finest historical novels. Banished from his father's court, Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns from Richard Lionheart's Crusades to claim love, justice and glory. Tyrannical Norman knights, indolent Saxon nobles and the usurper Prince John stand in his way. A saga of tournaments and melees, chivalry and love, nobility and merry men, Ivanhoe's own quest soon becomes a battle for the English throne itself... David Purdie's inspired reworking of Ivanhoe's complex characters, romance and high drama is an engrossing page-turner. His armour polished, his sword and dialogue sharp, Ivanhoe re-emerges alive for the modern age.
