This edition features a beautiful collection of the best of that art, taken from the likes of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Harry Clarke, Honor Appleton, Jennie Harbour, among others. This series of books celebrates the Golden Age of Illustration. During this period, the popularity, abundance and – most importantly – the unprecedented upsurge in the quality of illustrated works marked an astounding change in the way that publishers, artists and the general public came to view this hitherto insufficiently esteemed art form. The Golden Age of Illustration Series, has sourced the rare original editions of these books and reproduced the beautiful art work in order to build a unique collection of illustrated fairy tales. ‘The Red Shoes’ was first published in April of 1845, as part of Andersen’s New Fairy Tales: First Volume, Third Collection. Andersen explained the source of the story as being an incident he had witnessed as a small child. His father, he stated, had been sent a piece of red silk by a rich lady, who wanted the material converted into a pair of dancing slippers. Andersen’s father produced the slippers, but the rich woman was horrified at the result, and in reaction to her harsh criticism, he cut the shoes up in front of her.

Book excerpt: “The king’s son made a vow that he would never marry any but the one whom the shoe fitted, whatever her rank.” When the king’s son comes to the region, the stepmother and half-sisters of The Snow-White Maiden deny her request to attend church to see the Prince. However, with the assistance of Cantrips and her Enchantment Wand, she sees the Prince and catches his eye. When he follows her, succeeds in stealing her golden shoe, and vows to marry the one it fits, her sister is willing to go to great lengths to prevent the Snow-White Maiden from enjoying her happy ever after… “If I were in your place, I would send her away to that little island over there.” Unsuccessful in her attempts to kill her stepdaughter, the Queen convinces her husband to send the daughter from his first marriage to live on an island for three years. The Maid of the Isle makes the acquaintance of three lads, whose friendship over the years help thwart her stepmother’s plans, which grow ever more desperate when a Prince comes to ask for her hand in marriage… This duo of Inner Hebridean fairytales extend beyond the traditional stories of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Diamonds & Toads.’ Each has an episode of the Supplanted Bride or Heroine at the close of the tale, and can be enjoyed together in this new edition. Book excerpt: “If you have not guessed my name by month’s end, then you shall be mine!” In this classic English folktale, our heroine eats too many pies - which leads to her marrying a king who only wants her for her skills as a spinster - which leads to her making a deal with a diminutive, magical creature in order to save her life! Can she guess the name of her helper in time? Or will he succeed in claiming her as his own? The sequel, ‘The Gipsy Woman’, is set a year later and finds the queen once more charged with the task of spinning five skeins, daily, for a month. Help arrives in the form of a gipsy woman but can she be trusted? This book contains two versions of the each tale: one in modern day English, and the other, as told originally, in the dialect of East Anglia. [Folklore Type: ATU-500 (The Name of the Helper)]

When one suitor gains the means to identify her by way of a lost shoe, the search is on, but who will succeed in discovering her true identity and what will it mean for Trembling and her sisters?
