Book excerpt: "Nearly 25% of the world's population lives in karst areas -- landscapes that are characterized by sinkholes, caves, and underground drainage. Living with Karst, the 4th booklet in the AGI Environmental Awareness Series, vividly illustrates what karst is and why these resource-rich areas are important. The booklet also discusses karst-related environmental and engineering concerns, guidelines for living with karst, and sources of additional information."--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards in Karst Areas by : Mario Parise
Download or read book Natural and Anthropogenic Hazards in Karst Areas written by Mario Parise and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an overview of the main hazards affecting karst, including collapse and subsidence phenomena, hydrological hazards and human-induced geohazards. Consideration is also given to the problems of geohazard management in karst. The geological and hydrological properties of karst terrains make them among the most fragile in the world and pose serious problems for land managers. Sustainable development in these terrains requires efforts to limit geohazards of anthropogenic origin and to recognize and mitigate against those of natural origin. Aimed at providing the reader with worldwide case studies, the contributions cover a range of geological and morphological settings. Geographically, the fourteen papers discuss very different karst areas, from North America, the Caribbean and Asia to several karst areas in Europe, including the British Isles, Spain, France and Italy.

Book Synopsis Karst Management by : Philip E. van Beynen
Download or read book Karst Management written by Philip E. van Beynen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-21 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing specifically on the management of karst environments, this volume draws together the world’s leading karst experts to provide a vital source for the study and management of this unique physical setting. Although karst landscapes cover 12% of the Earth’s terrain and provide 25% of the world’s drinking water, the resource management of karst environments has only previously received indirect attention. Through a comprehensive approach, Karst Management focuses on engineering issues associated with surface karst such as quarries, dams, and agriculture, subsurface topics such as the management of groundwater, show caves, cave biota, and geo-archaeology projects. Chapters that focus on karst as an integrated system look at IUCN World Heritage sites, national parks, policy and regulation, measuring systematic disturbance, information management, and public environmental education. The text incorporates the most up-to-date research from leading karst scientists. This volume provides important perspectives for university students, educators, geoengineers, resource managers, and planners who are interested in or work with this unique physical landscape.
Book Synopsis Sinkholes and Subsidence by : Tony Waltham
Download or read book Sinkholes and Subsidence written by Tony Waltham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sinkholes and Subsidence" provides a twenty-first century account of how the various subsidence features in carbonate and evaporite rocks cause problems in development and construction in our living environment. The authors explain the processes by which different types of sinkholes develop and mature in karst terrains. They consider the various methods used in site investigations, both direct and indirect, to locate the features associated with these hazards and risks, highlighting the value of hazard mapping. Various ground improvement techniques and the special types of foundation structures which deal with these problems are covered in the second half of the text. This book is supplemented with a wealth of actual case studies and solutions, written by invited experts.

Book Synopsis Kinkaid Area Assessment: Geology by : Illinois. Dept. of Natural Resources. Office of Scientific Research and Analysis
Download or read book Kinkaid Area Assessment: Geology written by Illinois. Dept. of Natural Resources. Office of Scientific Research and Analysis and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kinkaid Area Assessment, part of a series of statewide regional assessments, examines 629 square miles, most of which falls within three counties-- Jackson, Perry, and Washington, in southern Illinois. The area falls within four natural divisions-- Southern Till Plain, Shawnee Hills, Ozark, and Lower Mississippi River Bottomlands. More than 90% of the assessment area, 574 square miles, lies within the Beaucoup Creek watershed. Beaucoup Creek originates in eastern Washington County and flows southward for about 81 miles to its confluence with the Big Muddy River in Jackson County. Kinkaid Creek has its headwaters in the northwestern portion of Jackson County and flows southeast until it meets the Big Muddy near Grimsby. Kinkaid Lake, formed when Kinkaid Creek was impounded about 30 years ago, is located in Jackson County. The report provides information on the natural and human resources of the area as a basis for managing and improving its ecosystems. The development of ecosystems-based information and management programs in Illinois are the result of three processes-- the Critical Trents Assessment Program, Conservation Congress, and Water Resources and Land Use Priorities Task Force.
