Book excerpt: Knowledge of the large-scale vertical velocity is required to predict the evolution of the atmospheric planetary boundary layer (APBL). Since naval operations are often conducted in data sparse regions, single-station assessments of the vertical velocity are necessary. Data to evaluate such assessments were obtained from rawinsondes taken at San Nicolas Island, California. Vertical velocity estimates obtained by vertical integration of the moisture budget equation (Q-method) and by the adiabatic method were used to initialize an APBL 24-hour prediction model. RMS error statistics on predicted inversion height, potential temperature, and specific humidity were computed for the forecasts and compared to the RMS errors of a persistence forecast. Calculation of the vertical velocity by the Q-method showed the most promise. However, no single-station assessment method improved on the persistence forecasts. (Author).

The ducting of electromagnetic energy is one of the most important influences in modern systems. The ability to describe the atmosphere is the first step in producing a realistic forecast. This study shows that in the eastern Mediterranean Sea the observed soundings appear to have a systematic error in the lower sections of the mixed layer. This, coupled with the synoptic scale changes in the atmosphere, causes single station forecasting scheme to fail. The thesis emphasizes two points: 1) the need for an accurate description of the atmosphere is paramount to any forecast. 2) the users of any single station forecast must use their knowledge of the models and compare the model results to the other information on hand to determine whether or not the prediction is reliable. There is an emphasis on the application of the ABL to numerical modelling of the climate. The book comprises nine chapters, several appendices (data tables, information sources, physical constants) and an extensive reference list. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction, with chapters 2 and 3 dealing with the development of mean and turbulence equations, and the many scaling laws and theories that are the cornerstone of any serious ABL treatment. Modelling of the ABL is crucially dependent for its realism on the surface boundary conditions, and chapters 4 and 5 deal with aerodynamic and energy considerations, with attention to both dry and wet land surfaces and sea. The structure of the clear-sky, thermally stratified ABL is treated in chapter 6, including the convective and stable cases over homogeneous land, the marine ABL and the internal boundary layer at the coastline. Chapter 7 then extends the discussion to the cloudy ABL. This is seen as particularly relevant, since the extensive stratocumulus regions over the subtropical oceans and stratus regions over the Arctic are now identified as key players in the climate system. Finally, chapters 8 and 9 bring much of the book's material together in a discussion of appropriate ABL and surface parameterization schemes in general circulation models of the atmosphere that are being used for climate simulation.

Book excerpt: The marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) and synoptic-scale situation is described using rawinsonde and sea-surface temperature (SST) data collected during the 1986 Frontal Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX). The data obtained from 14 February to 09 March 1986 are divided into eight consecutive three-day periods and analyzed. Significant changes in synoptic-scale features and flow patterns occurred during each three-day period due to movement of low pressure systems. MABL changes noted were due primarily to large scale convergence. Thirteen pairs of rawinsonde launches, seven from opposite sides of an oceanic front and six from the same side (five warm, one cold) are compared. The time difference between soundings in each pair did not exceed sixty minutes. Boundary layer height, mixed layer potential temperature and specific humidity differences between paired rawinsonde launches were larger when launches were from opposite sides of the oceanic front. A combination of both shipboard and aircraft data will be necessary to further describe the conditions of the MABL and synoptic-scale situation.

Book excerpt: Boundary layer convective eddies (BLCE) observed via synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on 17 June 1993 during the Hi-Res 2 field experiment are investigated using a three dimensional nonlinear spectral model derived from the shallow Boussinesq equations. Boundary conditions are appropriate for marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) flow and allow for heat and momentum fluxes across the lower boundary, as is required to determine sea surface stress patterns. Enhancements made to the model for this study include the addition of an inversion layer, an unstable surface layer and weighted nonlinear numerical dissipation. A more numerically accurate integration scheme is also incorporated. A linear stability analysis of Hi-Res 2 data finds maximum growth rates for disturbances having horizontal wavelengths that match those determined from the 17 June 1993 SAR image. Desirable by products of the analysis include the determination of physically plausible mean horizontal wind profiles and inversion strengths. Two model integrations are performed using identical measured atmospheric input values and initial conditions, but with different dissipation weights.
