Book excerpt: In recent years, considerable research activity has been conducted in the area of single-stage power factor corrected ac/dc converters. In these circuits, line current power factor correction and output voltage regulation for good transient response, are performed in a single converter stage. The general consensus of opinion has been that the single-stage approach has cost and efficiency advantages at unity power factor operation, and cost effective compliance with the EN61000-3-2 harmonic standard is regarded as a satisfactory design goal. This research is therefore concerned with the investigation of novel, single-stage, EN61000-3-2-compliant ac/dc converters, for 100W output, with particular emphasis on low voltage applications and resonant conversion. It is felt that single-stage ac/dc power conversion to the expected microprocessor voltage levels of 1-2V is unlikely, but that single-stage conversion to 5V/3.3V levels will have a wide range of applications. The emphasis on resonant conversion is prompted by the need to achieve high density ac/dc converters comparable with their ac/dc counterparts. Resonant operation will remove the frequency dependent losses in the semiconductor components, allowing significantly higher than normal frequencies to be employed and hence, enabling the size of the magnetic components to be reduced. Three novel topologies are derived in this thesis, all of which are based on a resonant circuit employed in compact fluorescent lighting applications. In all of these circuits, a resonant capacitor is connected directly across the input diode bridge rectifier. Through the operation of the resonant circuit resonant current is drawn directly from the ac utility over much of the line cycle. While this line current is not sinusoidal, it does comply with the EN61000-3-2 harmonic limits. Closely regulated output voltagecontrol is implemented in the three circuits. An intuitive, yet powerful analysis method, termed Rectifier-Compensated Fundamental Mode Approximation (RCFMA) Analysis, is applied to the converters. This is shown to be an accurate and insightful method, and much simpler to use than the highly accurate, but unwieldy, modal analysis technique. This analysis method is extended to provide a small-signal model for two of the converters. This proves very useful in the design of the control loop compensation. Two of the novel converters are extensively analysed, design procedures are developed and extensive prototype testing is performed. The prototypes designed are for European input voltage/5V output, and universal input voltage/3.3V output respectively.

Rectified power form the 50/60 Hz utility feeds a dc-ac converter which delivers high-frequency ac power to the electric vehicle inductive coupling inlet. The inlet configuration has been defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers in Recommended Practice J-1773. This thesis studies converter topologies related to the series resonant converter. When coupled to the vehicle inlet, the frequency-controlled series-resonant converter results in a capacitively-filtered series-parallel LCLC (SP-LCLC) resonant converter topology with zero voltage switching and many other desirable features. A novel time-domain transformation analysis, termed Modal Analysis, is developed, using a state variable transformation, to analyze and characterize this multi-resonant fourth-orderconverter. Next, Fundamental Mode Approximation (FMA) Analysis, based on a voltage-source model of the load, and its novel extension, Rectifier-Compensated FMA (RCFMA) Analysis, are developed and applied to the SP-LCLC converter. The RCFMA Analysis is a simpler and more intuitive analysis than the Modal Analysis, and provides a relatively accurate closed-form solution for the converter behavior. Phase control of the SP-LCLC converter is investigated as a control option. FMA and RCFMA Analyses are used for detailed characterization. The analyses identify areas of operation, which are also validated experimentally, where it is advantageous to phase control the converter. A novel hybrid control scheme is proposed which integrates frequency and phase control and achieves reduced operating frequency range and improved partial-load efficiency. The phase-controlled SP-LCLC converter can also be configured with a parallel load and is an excellent option for the application. The resulting topology implements soft-switching over the entire load range and has high full-load and partial-load efficiencies. RCFMA Analysis is used to analyze and characterize the new converter topology, and good correlation is shown with experimental results. Finally, a novel single-stage power-factor-corrected ac-dc converter is introduced, which uses the current-source characteristic of the SP-LCLC topology to provide power factor correction over a wide output power range from zero to full load. This converter exhibits all the advantageous characteristics of its dc-dc counterpart, with a reduced parts count and cost. Simulation and experimental results verify the operation of the new converter.

The DC-DC power conversion is an indispensable stage for numerous power supplies and energy related applications. Particularly, in PV micro-inverters and front-end converter of power supplies, great challenges are imposed on the power performances of the DC-DC converter stage, which not only require high efficiency and density but also the capability to regulate a wide variation range of input voltage and load conditions. The resonant DC-DC converters are good candidates to meet these challenges with the advantages of achieving soft switching and low EMI. Among various resonant converter topologies, the LLC converter is very attractive for its wide gain range and providing ZVS for switches from full load to zero load condition. The operation of the LLC converter is complicated due to its multiple resonant stage mechanism. A literature review of different analysis methods are presented, and it shows that the study on the LLC is still incomplete. Therefore, an operation mode analysis method is proposed, which divides the operation into six major modes based on the occurrence of resonant stages. The resonant currents, voltages and the DC gain characteristics for each mode is investigated. To obtain a thorough view of the converter behavior, the boundaries of every mode are studied, and mode distribution regarding the gain, load and frequency is presented and discussed. As this operation mode model is a precise model, an experimental prototype is designed and built to demonstrate its accuracy in operation waveforms and gain prediction. Since most of the LLC modes have no closed-form solutions, simplification is necessary in order to utilize this mode model in practical design. Some prior approximation methods for converter's gain characteristics are discussed. Instead of getting an entire gain-vs.-frequency curve, we focus on peak gains, which is an important design parameters indicating the LLC's operating limit of input voltage and switching frequency. A numerical peak gain approximation method is developed, which provide a direct way to calculate the peak gain and its corresponding load and frequency condition. The approximated results are compared with experiments and simulations, and are proved to be accurate. In addition, as PO mode is the most favorable operation mode of the LLC, its operation region is investigated and an approximation approach is developed to determine its boundary. The design optimization of the LLC has always been a difficult problem as there are many parameters affecting the design and it lacks clear design guidance in selecting the optimal resonant tank parameters. Based on the operation mode model, three optimization methods are proposed according to the design scenarios. These methods focus on minimize the conduction loss of resonant tank while maintaining the required voltage gain level, and the approximations of peak gains and PO mode boundary can be applied here to facilitate the design. A design example is presented using one of the proposed optimization methods. As a comparison, the L-C component values are reselected and tested for the same design specifications. The experiments show that the optimal design has better efficiency performance. Finally, a generalized approach for resonant converter analysis is developed. It can be implemented by computer programs or numerical analysis tools to derive the operation waveforms and DC characteristics of resonant converters.

Book excerpt: Nowadays the developments of power supplies in military, industrial or commercial applications are growing rapidly, not only to achieve the highest efficiency but also to focus on the size and weight minimization which are playing a major role in this area. Therefore, the research trends in dc-dc, ac-dc, dc-ac, ac-ac topologies are still continuously developing into the direction of new topologies, new control concepts, new materials and devices to achieve highest efficiency and smallest size. The cost per unit is also one of the most important points of power supplies. Also, with new control methods and new ways of manufacturing, for example, the cost per unit might be reduced. Also, a simplified control concept might help to avoid discrete circuits, especially, at low power levels. The last mentioned statement is demonstrated, for instance, by the concept of the Link-Switch of the company Power Integration where an extremely small number of components are necessary. With the target of minimization, this research work explores the possibility to replace conventional electromagnetic transformers considered as the most bulky devices in power supplies by piezoelectric transformers (PT) for innovative off-line power supplies. Several control methods for a load resonant converter focusing on class-E topology utilizing PT, were developed in order to investigate and to select an appropriate control method capable of improving the efficiency and reducing the size of the converter. Efficiency should be understood in this way as maximum reliability at minimum power losses. Different controllers were evaluated for optimizing the effect of disturbances of line and load variations. The ZVS condition for a wide input voltage range and a wide output load range can be achieved by a method called duty-cycle tracking.
