These models have different applications in different fields. As a result, creating 3D models is an interesting area in computer vision. There are many proposed methods for extracting 3D information of 2D images. One of the most common methods for 3D reconstruction is structured light methods. Although structured light methods can get valuable results of 3D reconstruction, they have limitations. For example, the structured light methods can get dense results on static scenes or get sparse results on dynamic scenes. In static scenes, the structured light method projects several patterns, and it results in dense models. However, in dynamic scenes, the structured light method projects just one pattern since the object is moving, and it results in sparse models. The limitation of the structured light methods in dynamic scenes is the most important motivation for this thesis. In this thesis, a single-shot structured light method is developed to overcome the sparse results in dynamic scenes. In particular, the proposed method can obtain more accurate reconstruction with just one image of dynamic scenes than that of existing methods. The new method applies global and local optimizations to establish dense correspondences. The result of simulated experiments comparison with the ground truth demonstrates that the proposed method in this thesis achieves more accurate results than that of previous methods. Lastly, the technique developed in this thesis is applied to real data in order to obtain high quality 3D reconstruction results. The results of the new method are more accurate compared to previous methods.

Book excerpt: Coded structured light is one of the most effective and reliable techniques for surface reconstruction. With a calibrated projector-camera stereo system, a set of illuminating patterns are projected onto the scene by projector and the image is captured by the camera. The correspondences between projector and camera frames are calculated in the decoding process, which is used for triangulation and point cloud generation. Continuous phase shifting method is a well-known fringe projection technique for 3D scanning. A set of sinusoidal patterns showing variation of intensity or color are projected onto the surface. This proposal, introduces a novel circular phase shifting method to improve the decoding accuracy, without the trade-off between the processing speed and decoding accuracy. In the proposed approach, three-step circular phase shifting and absolute patterns are used for increasing the multiplicity since the circular patterns are coded in all directions. The stereo triangulation is more stable and accurate than line-plane intersection used in single axis structured light methods by reducing incorrect decoding errors. Robust gray patterns are applied to resolve the ambiguity resolution caused by reflectance discontinuities in the phase shifting decoding process.

Book excerpt: In this book, the design of two new planar patterns for camera calibration of intrinsic parameters is addressed and a line-based method for distortion correction is suggested. The dynamic calibration of structured light systems, which consist of a camera and a projector is also treated. Also, the 3D Euclidean reconstruction by using the image-to-world transformation is investigated. Lastly, linear calibration algorithms for the catadioptric camera are considered, and the homographic matrix and fundamental matrix are extensively studied. In these methods, analytic solutions are provided for the computational efficiency and redundancy in the data can be easily incorporated to improve reliability of the estimations. This volume will therefore prove valuable and practical tool for researchers and practioners working in image processing and computer vision and related subjects.

Book excerpt: For machine vision and for graphical representation of real objects in a computer environment, the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the image of a real object has become a key technique. A few methods such as range finding, which use laser scanners, computer tomography, based on CTR or MRI machines, computational stereo, etc. were developed. Computational stereo is broadly defined as the recovery of 3D characteristics of a scene from a series of images obtained from different points in the three dimensional (Euclidean) space. In this thesis, a new algorithm and system is introduced and developed for the 3D reconstruction of the images of real objects from two 2D images required with two cameras. The algorithm is based on a new matching method, a new procedure for the determination of the fundamental matrix used in stereo vision, and a new technique for stereo fusion. The novelty of the matching procedure, and of the determination of the camera alignment, consists of the projection of a structured light pattern on the real object, the pattern being created using a pseudo-random encoded mesh (PRBA) (34). The novelty of the stereo fusion algorithm consists of the application of the dynamic programming principle (DP) (5) (27) using a cost function which contains the information obtained from the list of matched points. It is also proposed to use an autoregressive (AR) modeling technique for calculating the stereo disparity of each pixel of the two images. The autoregressive filter helps the DP part of the algorithm to calculate the disparity of the pixels when the above pixels are occluded. The above proposed methods offer three distinctive advantages over a conventional stereo system: (1) It easily generates a list of matching points. (2) It adds structure to an object without textures. (3) It is less computational intensive.

Book excerpt: One of the grand challenges of artificial intelligence is to enable computers to interpret 3D scenes and objects from imagery. This book organizes and introduces major concepts in 3D scene and object representation and inference from still images, with a focus on recent efforts to fuse models of geometry and perspective with statistical machine learning. The book is organized into three sections: (1) Interpretation of Physical Space; (2) Recognition of 3D Objects; and (3) Integrated 3D Scene Interpretation. The first discusses representations of spatial layout and techniques to interpret physical scenes from images. The second section introduces representations for 3D object categories that account for the intrinsically 3D nature of objects and provide robustness to change in viewpoints. The third section discusses strategies to unite inference of scene geometry and object pose and identity into a coherent scene interpretation. Each section broadly surveys important ideas from cognitive science and artificial intelligence research, organizes and discusses key concepts and techniques from recent work in computer vision, and describes a few sample approaches in detail. Newcomers to computer vision will benefit from introductions to basic concepts, such as single-view geometry and image classification, while experts and novices alike may find inspiration from the book's organization and discussion of the most recent ideas in 3D scene understanding and 3D object recognition. Specific topics include: mathematics of perspective geometry; visual elements of the physical scene, structural 3D scene representations; techniques and features for image and region categorization; historical perspective, computational models, and datasets and machine learning techniques for 3D object recognition; inferences of geometrical attributes of objects, such as size and pose; and probabilistic and feature-passing approaches for contextual reasoning about 3D objects and scenes. We can classify computer vision techniques into two classes: passive and active techniques. Passive techniques observe the scene statically and analyse it as is. Active techniques give the scene some actions and try to facilitate the analysis. In particular, active illumination techniques project specific light, for which the characteristics are known beforehand, to a target scene to enable stable and accurate analysis of the scene. Traditional passive techniques have a fundamental limitation. The external world surrounding us is three-dimensional; the image projected on a retina or an imaging device is two-dimensional. That is, reduction of one dimension has occurred. Active illumination techniques compensate for the dimensional reduction by actively controlling the illumination. The demand for reliable vision sensors is rapidly increasing in many application areas, such as robotics and medical image analysis. This book explains this new endeavour to explore the augmentation of reduced dimensions in computer vision. This book consists of three parts: basic concepts, techniques, and applications. The first part explains the basic concepts for understanding active illumination techniques. In particular, the basic concepts of optics are explained so that researchers and engineers outside the field can understand the later chapters. The second part explains currently available active illumination techniques, covering many techniques developed by the authors. The final part shows how such active illumination techniques can be applied to various domains, describing the issue to be overcome by active illumination techniques and the advantages of using these techniques. This book is primarily aimed at 4th year undergraduate and 1st year graduate students, and will also help engineers from fields beyond computer vision to use active illumination techniques. Additionally, the book is suitable as course material for technical seminars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-of-flight (TOF) cameras provide a depth value at each pixel, from which the 3D structure of the scene can be estimated. This new type of active sensor makes it possible to go beyond traditional 2D image processing, directly to depth-based and 3D scene processing. Many computer vision and graphics applications can benefit from TOF data, including 3D reconstruction, activity and gesture recognition, motion capture and face detection. It is already possible to use multiple TOF cameras, in order to increase the scene coverage, and to combine the depth data with images from several colour cameras. Mixed TOF and colour systems can be used for computational photography, including full 3D scene modelling, as well as for illumination and depth-of-field manipulations. This work is a technical introduction to TOF sensors, from architectural and design issues, to selected image processing and computer vision methods.
