Because of sampling differences, data analysis differences and contextual differences, studies of single-sex versus coeducational classrooms has not yielded a clear set of conclusions. Having taught English for several years the researcher have clearly noticed that there is a significant difference between males, females and coed classrooms in terms of technical and vocational students' end-of-semester marks. Therefore, the present book endeavors to shed light, as much as it can, on the effect of single-sex/coed class composition on the English learning of Iranian technical and vocational students.The statistical analysis of the results shows that single-sex classes appear to be most advantageous for females whereas males performed better in coed classes. Males' class showed the weakest performance.

We randomly assign students to all-female, all-male, and coed classes and, therefore, get around the selection issues present in studies on single-sex education done on students in primary and secondary school. We find that one hour a week of single-sex education benefits females: females are 7.5% more likely to pass their first year courses and score 8% higher overall. Furthermore, females in all-females classes are roughly 9% more likely to continue studying economics and business at university than females who studied in coed classes. There is evidence that single-sex education causes women to adopt behaviors associated with better academic outcomes: such as attending more classes and doing optional assignments. However, these behavioral changes can explain, at most 40% of the all-female effect, suggesting that there is a large direct effect of single-sex education on outcomes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to discover achievement and behavioral differences among students who had been separated by sex in the classroom setting. Student performance in coed classes was compared in several areas to that of students in single sex classrooms for both sexes. The project was designed to elicit improved writing skills and more cooperative classroom behavior from middle school students engaged in a series of lessons that focused on the writing process. The students were involved in writing activities beginning with prewriting and ending with peer editing. All work was completed and collected in class. Qualitative assessments were based on Likert style questionnaires and one-on-one interviews. In general, while students appeared to find this form of education useful, quantitatively the results were mixed. The girls only class demonstrated the highest achievement, the coed classes the next highest levels of achievement, and the boys only class the least achievement.

A purposive sample of all students in grades three through six enrolled in single sex classrooms in a public school in a large urban city was included in this research. Comparison groups were selected from a neighboring public schools, ensuring the most consistency across demographic variables. Students completed two surveys: the School Engagement Survey (Fitt & DuCette, 2001) and the Estes Attitude Scale - Revised (Estes, Estes, Richards & Roetiger, 1981). Also, achievement data for these students were collected via a state sponsored school district data warehousing system. Students were also asked to participate in same sex, same grade focus groups. Ten teachers of these students were asked to participate in individual interviews. Results indicated that students in single-sex classes had statistically higher means than students in coeducational settings on the School Engagement Survey sections of Positive Self Perception, Positive Teacher Belief, and Positive School Environment. Also, students in coeducational settings had statistically higher means on the Estes Attitudes Scales for the subject of mathematics. Students who were enrolled in single-sex classes for more than one year had higher scores on standardized mathematics tests. Although single-sex and coeducational students start at approximately the same level for both reading and math, the single-sex students consistently score higher than their coeducational counterparts. Additionally, the results showed no significant gender differences on any of the measures of attitudes or achievement. Teachers did not drastically change their instructional approach after being assigned to a single-sex classroom but they did change their approach to behavior management. Teachers do not participate in quality, ongoing professional development to support their practice as teachers of a single-sex class. Both boys and girls seem to enjoy the attention they receive in single-sex classes. Boys and girls also expressed a feeling of comfort in the single-sex setting. Boys and girls alike expressed enjoyment of all school subjects including mathematics and science. Girls and younger boys perceived themselves as being much more academically successful in the single-sex classroom. Boys in grades five and six perceived themselves as failing academically and they blame the bad behavior exhibited in their all boys' classes.

In Trinidad and Tobago students are assigned to secondary schools based on an algorithm allowing one to address self-selection bias and cleanly estimate an upper-bound single-sex school effect. The upper-bound effects show that while students (particularly females) with strong expressed preferences for single-sex schools may benefit from attending them, most students perform no better at single sex schools. I show that the treatment effect for the typical single-sex student differs greatly from that of the average student. Girls at single-sex-schools take fewer sciences courses and more traditionally female subjects.

Achievement data were collected from two Federal Setting IV special education buildings. These settings are for students who struggle to succeed in their home placement schools. The population in these schools are 86-90% male. In these buildings the only single gender classrooms are male. The data collected were pre- and post-data in reading and math. The instruments used were the NWEA-Map and the FastBridge-aReading and aMath. The analysis of these sources of data will help determine if a difference exists between achievement and the gender make-up of classrooms. The findings of the study show that there is no difference in the achievement of single and dual gender classrooms. It was found that these students served in a Federal Setting IV school made minimal gains in achievement. The longevity analysis of three school years showed that the students' scores decreased overtime in these settings. The dual and single gender classes did see an increase in achievement during one school year and in both reading and math. It was not a consistent pattern of growth so no conclusion can be made on the differences in single or dual gender classes. Further research is needed in Federal Setting IV schools.
