Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html The word of God, being the most true and perfect rule of piety, as said, all Christians need, but shepherds, that is, bishops and priests, especially: for they took the “key of understanding” ( Luke 11:52 ), which is the word of God “No one can serve two masters ,” says the Lord ( Matt. 6:24 ). About this, St. John Chrysostom teaches: “Do not tell me that you are not worshiping the golden idol, but show me that you are not doing what the gold commands you to do. For the images of idolatry are different: one honors the mammon for gentlemen, another - the womb for God, another - the most universal lust. You do not devour oxen like the Greeks, but much worse, you slaughter your soul; you don’t kneel, you don’t worship, but with great obedience you do everything that commands you womb, gold and lust torment. Therefore, the Greeks are vile, because our passions have been enriched.” (Conversation 6 on the Epistle to the Romans).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many Christians pray the Lord’s Prayer. It is almost “second nature.” This book is meant to help these people pray it more deeply and lovingly. Ecumenical and even striving to be global in nature, this book explores what the Scriptures teach us about this prayer, how the Christian tradition has approached this prayer in its long history, and how many of our contemporary concerns challenge the way we can pray this prayer, and also how the prayer can provide insights for those same concerns. People of all persuasions, believers and nonbelievers, “nones,” and followers of the world’s great religions will also find many of their concerns given serious consideration in this book. If you think nothing new can be said about the “Our Father,” this book may surprise you.

Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Debt by : Alexander X. Douglas
Download or read book The Philosophy of Debt written by Alexander X. Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I owe you a dinner invitation, you owe ten years on your mortgage, and the government owes billions. We speak confidently about these cases of debt, but is that concept clear in its meaning? This book aims to clarify the concept of debt so we can find better answers to important moral and political questions. This book seeks to accomplish two things. The first is to clarify the concept of debt by examining how the word is used in language. The second is to develop a general, principled account of how debts generate genuine obligations. This allows us to avoid settling each case by a bare appeal to moral intuitions, which is what we seem to currently do. It requires a close examination of many institutions, e.g. money, contract law, profit-driven finance, government fiscal operations, and central banking. To properly understand the moral and political nature of debt, we must understand how these institutions have worked, how they do work, and how they might be made to work. There have been many excellent anthropological and sociological studies of debt and its related institutions. Philosophy can contribute to the emerging discussion and help us to keep our language precise and to identify the implicit principles contained in our intuitions.

Book Synopsis Spiritual Exercises Based on Paul's Epistle to the Romans by : Joseph A. Fitzmyer
Download or read book Spiritual Exercises Based on Paul's Epistle to the Romans written by Joseph A. Fitzmyer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul's letter to the Romans is often regarded as the most profoundly doctrinal book in the Bible. While not overlooking its complex theology, Joseph Fitzmyer here shows Romans to be also a wellspring of devotional insight, accessible and deeply rewarding to all Christians. In this book Fitzmyer recasts the text of Romans into the form of meditations for devotional reflection in spiritual retreats, Bible studies, church classrooms, small groups, and other prayerful gatherings. Styled after the famous Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, the book includes twenty-four meditations that can be divided in a variety of ways and fit to a range of reading schedules. Accompanying each meditation are questions to encourage reflection on the passage of Romans being considered and also a colloquy in the form of a psalm or New Testament hymn that matches the sentiment of the Pauline passage. A truly fulfilling approach to spirituality, Fitzmyer's Spiritual Exercises demonstrates the role of Scripture in properly ordering the Christian life.
