Before he dies, Tuna asks Sina to bury his head near her house. A few months later, a very special tree grows from where the head was buried. The tree is a coconut tree, one of the most important trees found in the islands of the Pacific, for its life giving fruits, leaves and fronds from which homes are thatched and other important traditional building materials and utensils are made.

Collectively, this anthology features the fantastic as present-day Indigenous Pacific world-building that looks to the past in creating alternative futures, and in so doing reimagines relationships between peoples, environments, deities, nonhuman relatives, history, dreams, and storytelling. Wonder is activated by curiosity, humility in the face of mystery, and engagement with possibilities. We see wonder and the fantastic as general modes of expression that are not confined to realism. As such, the fantastic encompasses fantasy, science fiction, magic realism, fabulation, horror, fairy tale, utopia, dystopia, and speculative fiction. In this collection, Oceanic ideas and images surround and connect to Hawaiʻi, which is for the three coeditors, a piko (center); at the same time, navigating both juxtaposition and association, the collection seeks to articulate pilina (relationships) across genres, locations, time, and media and to celebrate the multiplicity and relationality of the fantastic in Oceania.

How are the cultural self and the cultural other constructed in acts of remembering? What is memory's role in the generation or degeneration of cultural meanings? In contemporary Pacific societies these questions are not merely the subject of scholarly debate but speak to pressing life concerns. This volume offers fruitful responses to such questions, providing insights into colonial memory and its limitations and proposing explanations that illumine cultural memory processes. These processes, in turn, elucidate ways of authoring cultural history and shed light on cultural identity, which, like other forms of identity, is built from a remembered self. Contributors explore valorizations of certain aspects of the remembered past, amnesias about other aspects. This story of a supernatural warning is one of many mystical encounters Dr. Farrell heard in twenty-three years working as a prison psychologist. Men in solitary confinement have nowhere to go, so some go out of body. Prisons are ghost-laden, and some murderers are confronted by the ghost of their victim asking, "Why?" Other men are comforted by visitations. Some men learn to put themselves into a trance where they contact dead relatives for advice or to relieve loneliness. Many drug dealers tell of dead former comrades telling them, "Get off the street. Get out of the drug game." Dr. Farrell heard similar stories from his middle-class patients representing a variety of professions including teachers, nurses, construction workers, firefighters, veterans and others who had mystical experiences. People who have these encounters are transformed. After most mystical experiences people become more centered and less distracted by superficial excitements such as drugs, alcohol, gambling, or uncommitted sex. For this reason the final section of the book presents a variety of paths, including meditation, which induce spiritual experiences.

The contributing authors provide divergent definitions of academic literacies and use dissimilar theoretical and methodological approaches to study literacy development.
