Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study is made up of three parts. The first one, entitled the notion of sin by Stanislas Lyonnet, starts from the observation that redemption is essentially the destruction of sin. For this reason the treatise on redemption in the New Testament is preceded by an inquiry into the notion of sin, as it derives from the Old Testament, especially from the account of Genesis 3. The second part, also from Stanislas Lyonnet, is devoted to the terminology of redemption in the N.T. The third part, by Leopold Sabourin, is about sacrifice and redemption in the history of St. Paul's formula Christ made sin (2 Cor 5,21). The author examines the most representative testimonies of the ancient and Medieval Greek and Latin writers, and exposes his interpretation of 2 Cor 5, 21, in which the notion of sacrifice for sin appears as a key concept in this formulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays explore the role sacrificial metaphor has to play in theological interpretation of the death of Christ, and ask whether such a metaphor makes sense today. They make clear that the political and psychological connotations of sacrificial language have in modern times given rise to great unease, and examine, in particular, the Catholic tradition of the eucharistic sacrifice, a tradition that was vigorously challenged at the Reformation. Looking at the various controversies from a variety of perspectives, the contributions to the book have a pronounced ecumenical slant, and illuminate sacrifice at the major, formative moments in history, from Old Testament times to contemporary theology.

Book Synopsis Sacrifice and Atonement by : Stephen Finlan
Download or read book Sacrifice and Atonement written by Stephen Finlan and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beneath the commonplace affirmation that Jesus “paid for our sins” lie depths of implication: did God demand a blood sacrifice to assuage divine anger? Is sacrifice (consciously or unconsciously) intended to induce the deity to show favor? What underlies the various metaphors for atonement used in the Bible? Here, Stephen Finlan surveys psychological theories that help us to understand beliefs about sacrifice and atonement and what they may reveal about patterns of injury, guilt, shame, and appeasement. Early chapters examine the language in both testaments of purity and the “scapegoat,” and of payment, obligation, reciprocity, and redemption. Later chapters review theories of the origins of atonement thinking in fear and traumatic childhood experience, in ambivalent or avoidant attachment to the parents, and in “poisonous pedagogy.” The theories of Sandor Rado, Mary Ainsworth, Erik Erikson, and Alice Miller are examined, then Finlan draws conclusions about the moral responsibility of appropriating or rejecting atonement metaphors. His arguments bear careful consideration by all who live with these metaphors and their effects today.
Book Synopsis God's Son "Forsaken," His Sacrifice "Finished!" by : Ken Lenz
Download or read book God's Son "Forsaken," His Sacrifice "Finished!" written by Ken Lenz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the seven statements Christ uttered from the cross, two stand out as being extremely significant in confirming what was being accomplished through the atoning sacrifice of Christ. The question, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” gives us a sense of what was in “the cup” of God’s wrathful judgment, which Jesus drank to its bitterest dregs on our behalf. The exclamation, “It is finished!” unquestionably assures us that the Savior’s atoning sacrifice accomplished what was necessary in satisfactorily paying the debt owed for our sin. Your gratitude and faith will be strengthened as you read this book. This book is unique in the following ways: 1. This book focuses on only two of the seven statements Christ made while on the cross, and they are brought together in testimony to the most profound truths concerning God’s plan of salvation. 2. This book includes alternative viewpoints (including historical perspectives) and challenges unbiblical perspectives in regard to these statements of Christ and their significance, including some church dogmas. 3. This book demonstrates that salvation is graciously offered by God based on an individual’s repentant faith. Jesus Christ purchased our redemption. All that is left is for us to repent of sin and receive the Savior. Would you like a “faith lift” today? Would you like your heart to grow in love and gratitude toward the Savior? If so, this book is for you.
