Book excerpt: Scheduling of machines has been interested in flexible manufacturing systems due to the flexibility and simultaneous task process capability of such production systems. Advanced material handling systems such as automated guided vehicles are being used in flexible manufacturing systems. Automated guided vehicles are flexible and easy to utilize in flexible manufacturing systems. Therefore, dynamic simultaneous scheduling and sequencing of flexible manufacturing systems and automated guided vehicles, are considered as the main focus of this study. Scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles, if considered separately, are NP-Hard problems. Similarly, simultaneous scheduling of machines and automated vehicles are NP-Hard. Although there are some studies on static scheduling of machines and vehicles, dynamic scheduling has not been studied thoroughly in the literature. Population based search algorithms have been used to solve complex problems and in order to find solution sets. In this study, a genetic algorithm is designed to propose solutions for simultaneous scheduling and sequencing of machines and automated guided vehicles in flexible manufacturing systems environments in dynamic situation. In order to assist designers of manufacturing systems, two design variables were added to mathematical model presented in this study. These two design variables were battery charge capacity and number of active automated guided vehicles in the system. A specific time frame was assumed for each job set to schedule machines and automated guided vehicles dynamically. The genetic algorithm was initially validated by bench mark problems from previous studies. Ten job sets previously scheduled by other researchers using heuristic ii and meta heuristic approaches were used. Precedence constrain connects tasks by a network. There are 4 layouts which define machine locations and automated guided vehicle paths. Through solving the static scheduling problem of previous studies, the genetic algorithm was validated. Thereafter, a set of dynamic scheduling problem was developed from previous bench mark problems and solved using the modified model proposed and validated in this study. Dynamic scheduling problem results show that the genetic algorithm is not limited by the number of components to schedule in the mathematical model. In addition, it was found that as the number of active automated guided vehicles increase in the system, the total completion time decreases. This fact is due to the availability of automated guided vehicle to travel demand. Although having more vehicles in the system may increase the costs of production, one could argue the advantages and disadvantages. According to the results, the total completion time for the first static and dynamic scheduling problems (Job set 1, Layout 1) for one to four vehicles are 161 to 76 and 481 to 186 respectively. Another observation was finding best vehicle type based on the battery charge capacity. Automated guided vehicles maintenance and costs are related to the type and their ability to run with a single charge. Therefore, it is important to choose vehicles which fulfill the needs and requirements of the system. The battery charge capacities were from 25 to 100 which affects the total completion times for static and dynamic scheduling problems relatively. The total completion times for static scheduling problems are 100 to 96 for battery capacities 25 to 100. Likewise dynamic scheduling problem completion times are 291.5 to 272.5.

Book excerpt: Flexible manufacturing system (FMS) has been introduced by the researchers as an integrated manufacturing environment. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) introduced as the main tool of material handling systems in FMS. While the scheduling of AGVs and machines are highly related; simultaneous scheduling of machines and AGVs has been proposed in the literature. Genetic algorithm (GA) proposed as a robust tool for optimization of scheduling problems. Setting the proper crossover and mutation rates are of vital importance for the performance of the GA. Fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) have been used in the literature to control key parameters of the GA which is addressed as fuzzy GA (FGA). A new application of FGA method in simultaneous scheduling of AGVs and machines is presented. The general GA is modified for the aforementioned application; more over an FLC is developed to control mutation and crossover rates of the GA. The objective of proposed FGA method is to minimize the makespan, production completion time of all jobs that they are produced simultaneously. An optimal sequence of operations is obtained by GA. There is a heuristic algorithm to assign the AGVs to the operations. As the main findings, the performance of GA in simultaneous scheduling of AGVs and machines is enhanced by using proposed method, furthermore a new mutation operator has been proposed. Several experiments have been done to the proposed test cases. The results showed that tournament selection scheme may outperform roulette wheel in this problem. Various combinations of population size and number of generations are compared to each other in terms of their objective function. In large scale problems FGA method may outperforms GA method, while in small and medium problems they have the same performance. The fluctuation of obtained makespan in FGA method is less than GA method which means that it is more probable to find a better solution by FGA rather than GA.

A firing sequence of the Petri net from the initial marking to the final marking can be seen as a schedule of the modeled FMS. By using the branch-and-bound algorithm, an optimal schedule of the FMS can be obtained. Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) are increasingly used for material handling in factories and warehouses. An AGVS can reduce labor costs and is ready to be integrated into an automated factory. This thesis presents two AGVS models (shared and duty) which integrate the control of AGVS with the control of part processing facilities. Both types of AGVS are modeled by Petri nets. We want to compare the two AGVS in terms of systems performance and discuss which application is more suitable for each AGVS type. We also want to consider and solve AGV jam problems. The objective of the AGV jam-free control module is to guarantee a jam-free condition among AGVs in an EMS. Results have been obtained and analyzed.

Book excerpt: Presenting the concept and design and implementation of configurable intelligent optimization algorithms in manufacturing systems, this book provides a new configuration method to optimize manufacturing processes. It provides a comprehensive elaboration of basic intelligent optimization algorithms, and demonstrates how their improvement, hybridization and parallelization can be applied to manufacturing. Furthermore, various applications of these intelligent optimization algorithms are exemplified in detail, chapter by chapter. The intelligent optimization algorithm is not just a single algorithm; instead it is a general advanced optimization mechanism which is highly scalable with robustness and randomness. Therefore, this book demonstrates the flexibility of these algorithms, as well as their robustness and reusability in order to solve mass complicated problems in manufacturing. Since the genetic algorithm was presented decades ago, a large number of intelligent optimization algorithms and their improvements have been developed. However, little work has been done to extend their applications and verify their competence in solving complicated problems in manufacturing. This book will provide an invaluable resource to students, researchers, consultants and industry professionals interested in engineering optimization. It will also be particularly useful to three groups of readers: algorithm beginners, optimization engineers and senior algorithm designers. It offers a detailed description of intelligent optimization algorithms to algorithm beginners; recommends new configurable design methods for optimization engineers, and provides future trends and challenges of the new configuration mechanism to senior algorithm designers.

Book excerpt: With the approach of the 21st century, and the current trends in manufacturing, the role of computer-controlled flexible manufacturing an integral part in the success of manufacturing enterprises. will take Manufacturing environments are changing to small batch (with batch sizes diminishing to a quantity of one), larger product variety, produc tion on demand with low lead times, with the ability to be 'agile.' This is in stark contrast to conventional manufacturing which has relied on economies of scale, and where change is viewed as a disruption and is therefore detrimental to production. Computer integrated manufac turing (CIM) and flexible manufacturing practices are a key component in the transition from conventional manufacturing to the 'new' manu facturing environment. While the use of computers in manufacturing, from controlling indi vidual machines (NC, Robots, AGVs etc.) to controlling flexible manu facturing systems (FMS) has advanced the flexibility of manufacturing environments, it is still far from reaching its full potential in the environment of the future. Great strides have been made in individual technologies and control of FMS has been the subject of considerable research, but computerized shop floor control is not nearly as flexible or integrated as hyped in industrial and academic literature. In fact, the integrated systems have lagged far behind what could be achieved with existing technology.
