Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation continues to be a growth area in transportation human factors. From empirical studies in the laboratory to the latest training techniques in the field, simulators offer myriad benefits for the experimenter and the practitioner. This book draws together current trends in research and training simulators for the road, rail, air and sea sectors to inform the reader how to maximize both validity and cost-effectiveness in each case. Simulators for Transportation Human Factors provides a valuable resource for both researchers and practitioners in transportation human factors on the use of simulators, giving readers concrete examples and case studies of how simulators have been developed and used in empirical research as well as training applications. It offers useful and usable information on the functional requirements of simulators without the need for any background knowledge on the technical aspects, focusing on the state of the art of research and applications in transport simulators rather than the state of the art of simulation technology. The book covers simulators in operational terms instead of task simulation/modelling and provides a useful balance between a bottom-up, academic approach and a top-down, practical perspective.

Book excerpt: To date, the most common form of simulators of computer systems are software-based running on standard computers. One promising approach to improve simulation performance is to apply hardware, specifically reconfigurable hardware in the form of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). This manuscript describes various approaches of using FPGAs to accelerate software-implemented simulation of computer systems and selected simulators that incorporate those techniques. More precisely, we describe a simulation architecture taxonomy that incorporates a simulation architecture specifically designed for FPGA accelerated simulation, survey the state-of-the-art in FPGA-accelerated simulation, and describe in detail selected instances of the described techniques. Table of Contents: Preface / Acknowledgments / Introduction / Simulator Background / Accelerating Computer System Simulators with FPGAs / Simulation Virtualization / Categorizing FPGA-based Simulators / Conclusion / Bibliography / Authors' Biographies

Book excerpt: From power electronics to power integrated circuits (PICs), smart power technologies, devices, and beyond, Integrated Power Devices and TCAD Simulation provides a complete picture of the power management and semiconductor industry. An essential reference for power device engineering students and professionals, the book not only describes the physics inside integrated power semiconductor devices such lateral double-diffused metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (LDMOSFETs), lateral insulated-gate bipolar transistors (LIGBTs), and super junction LDMOSFETs but also delivers a simple introduction to power management systems. Instead of abstract theoretical treatments and daunting equations, the text uses technology computer-aided design (TCAD) simulation examples to explain the design of integrated power semiconductor devices. It also explores next generation power devices such as gallium nitride power high electron mobility transistors (GaN power HEMTs). Including a virtual process flow for smart PIC technology as well as a hard-to-find technology development organization chart, Integrated Power Devices and TCAD Simulation gives students and junior engineers a head start in the field of power semiconductor devices while helping to fill the gap between power device engineering and power management systems.

Book excerpt: Computer Simulation Analysis of Biological and Agricultural Systems focuses on the integration of mathematical models and the dynamic simulation essential to system analysis, design, and synthesis. The book emphasizes the quantitative dynamic relationships between elements and system responses. Problems of various degrees of difficulty and complexity are discussed to illustrate methods of computer-aided design and analysis that can bridge the gap between theories and applications. These problems cover a wide variety of subjects in the biological and agricultural fields. Specific guidelines and practical methods for defining requirements, developing specifications, and integrating system modeling early in simulation development are included as well. Computer Simulation Analysis of Biological and Agricultural Systems is an excellent text and self-guide for agricultural engineers, agronomists, foresters, horticulturists, soil scientists, mechanical engineers, and computer simulators.

Book excerpt: "This report presents the development of the U.S. Army's Force 21 Training Program's Combined Arms Operations at the Brigade Level, Realistically Achieved Through Simulation 2 (COBRAS 2) training program. The COBRAS 2 program extends prior training research, providing expanded structured, simulation based training for conventionally equipped brigade staffs. A Brigade Staff Exercise (BSE) for the brigade commander and staff represents one program component. This BSE succeeds the original (COBRAS 1) BSE by incorporating a wider audience. The second component is a set of brigade staff vignettes. It augments the COBRAS 1 vignette library by including training for brigade staff members and staff processes not covered in COBRAS 1 vignettes. This report describes the COBRAS 2 program background, design and development efforts, and the resulting exercises and training support packages. The report discusses lessons learned regarding future program development, and concludes with an introduction to the COBRAS 2 follow on effort that employs COBRAS 2 project and related research findings in the development and testing of logical next steps in Force 21 Training Program efforts."--Stinet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This phase of the USCG Training and Licensing project established a methodology for determining performance standards to be used in measuring simulator training effectiveness. The Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF) Shiphandling Simulator was utilized to measure the shiphandling performance of experts, i.e., pilots. Special scenarios were designed to cover a variety of training objectives relevant to shiphandling. These objectives included: approaching a harbor, responding to a rudder failure in confined waters, negotiating a 51 turn with passing ship effects, negotiating a 129 turn around a shoal with incoming traffic, and responding to a propulsion failure in the vicinity of a bridge and shoal. Fourteen pilots were run through these scenarios in order to assess the responses of shiphandling experts to the test situations. Fourteen chief mates, upgrading to the master level, were then run through the same scenarios. The chief mates were considered novice shiphandlers. This report includes a detailed description of the test scenarios, performance measures, expert and novice data, and a method for deriving performance criteria to be used in assessing the effectiveness of simulator training.
