Book excerpt: The importance of the energy and commodity markets has steadily increased since the first oil crisis. The sustained use of energy and other resources has become a basic requirement for a company to competitively perform on the market. The modeling, analysis and assessment of dynamic production processes is often performed using simulation software. While existing approaches mainly focus on the consideration of resource consumption variables based on metrologically collected data on operating states, the aim of this work is to depict the energy consumption of production plants through the utilization of a continuous simulation approach in combination with a discrete approach for the modeling of material flows and supporting logistic processes. The complex interactions between the material flow and the energy usage in production can thus be simulated closer to reality, especially the depiction of energy consumption peaks becomes possible. An essential step towards reducing energy consumption in production is the optimization of the energy use of non-value-adding production phases.

Book excerpt: In multi-agent-based simulation (MABS) the behavior of individual actors is modeled in detail. The analysis and validation of these models is rated as difficult and requires support by innovative techniques and tools. Problems include model complexity, the amount and often qualitative representation of simulation results, and the typical dichotomy between microscopic modeling and macroscopic observation perspectives. In recent years, data mining has been increasingly applied as a support technique in this context. A particularly promising approach is found in the field of process mining. Due to its rooting in business process analysis, process mining shares several process- and organization-oriented analysis perspectives and use cases with agent-based modeling. This thesis proposes a conceptual framework for the systematic application of process mining to the analysis and validation of MABS. As a foundation, agent-oriented analysis perspectives and simulation-specific use cases are identified and complemented with methods, techniques, and results from the literature. A partial formalization of perspectives and use cases is sketched by utilizing concepts from process modeling and software engineering. Beyond the conceptual work, process mining is applied in two case studies related to different modeling and simulation approaches.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the foundations, the initial state, and the progress made in modelling and implementing a real-world and real-time online microscopic traffic simulation system for highway traffic. To successfully model and implement such a simulation system, this thesis recommends the use of a number of formal methods applied at the right places. As part of the recommendation, this thesis proposes a microscopic traffic simulation system. To explore the feasibility and the potential of the recommended methods, it observes and examines the proposed system from multiple views and under various different aspects. As part of the examination, this thesis provides a (semi-)formal specification, a model implementation, an implementation of a productive system, and the benefits that result from validating such a system. The results and any proper application of them have the potential to increase the reliability and the trustworthiness for any future implementation of the proposed simulation system. The presented results additionally motivate to apply the proposed approach to similar simulation systems. The thesis concludes the presentation of the results with some considerations for future implementations.

Book excerpt: The present thesis establishes a complete framework for the combination of finite element and classical ray based acoustic simulations in small rooms and discusses the inherent challenges and limitations including all aspects of sound generation, sound reflection and sound reception. In this context, the thesis gives detailed guidelines for the best-possible determination of all necessary input data for both simulation domains. The overall potential of the presented combined approach is assessed by conducting extensive objective and subjective comparisons of measurement and simulation results for three types of acoustically relevant small spaces (a scale-model reverberation room, a recording studio and two different car passenger compartments).

Book excerpt: Mathematics course with 60 Java-based interactive mathematic simulations by the author Comprehensive and systematically organized collection of 2,000 Java-based physics simulations All simulations are runnable, and can be accessed both on- and offline Visualization of mathematic relationships Facilitates an experiment-based understanding of problems, including suggestions for your own mathematical experiments Calculation procedures can be adjusted in a variety of ways Introduction to simulation techniques with the EJS (Easy Java Simulation) tool Visual interface for simple and transparent modeling and programming Building block library for programming one's own simulations Quick access to simulations from links embedded in the digital text Mathematics is the language of physics and technology. Yet in the age of computers, mathematic skill is not based on mastery of arithmetic. Rather, it depends on understanding relationships in time and space, and expressing them with precise and clear formulas. In this regard, one cannot rely on the rote memorization of rules and formulas - insight and intuitive understanding are crucial. But how can this understanding be achieved in higher mathematics, which depends on abstract concepts such as complex numbers, real and complex infinite series, infinitesimal calculus, 2, 3, and 4 dimensional functions, conformal maps, vectors, and linear and nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations? The author takes a highly practical approach to facilitating the insight essential for true learning in mathematics. Students can work directly with the simulation programs, can visualize relationships, and creatively interact with the calculation procedures. Proceeding in textbook fashion, the work makes use of a broad palette of multimedia tools, and features numerous interactive calculation programs for mathematical experimentation. Students merely have to select one of the many predefined examples and set the relevant parameters - and in a flash the results are graphically displayed in 2 or 3 dimensions. In addition, the specific functions used can be changed or even newly formulated according to user preferences. For example, a procedure developed for a fourth degree power function for the numerical calculation of zero points can be adapted for use with another function. Each simulation is accompanied by a detailed description, instructions for use, and numerous suggestions for experimentation. The mathematical simulations are based on the Easy Java Simulation (EJS) programming tool. All of the files developed with EJS are completely open and transparent. The user can even draw on the examples as building blocks for the development his or her own calculation procedures. The appendix contains a short introduction to EJS. The work is enriched by a comprehensive collection of cosmological simulations as well as models from the Open Source Physics project, organized by subject area. Intended as a systematic collection of methods and materials for upper-secondary school teachers and as a course for students of physics and mathematics, the work facilitates hands-on and experiment-driven learning in higher mathematics. The print version contains the electronic text and simulations for offline use. For questions concerning download or online access to the simulations, please contact [email protected].

They are used to represent engineering systems in written form by means of letter elements and their interconnections, called bonds, instead of in the form of numerous equations. They may be used to increase the efficiency of new product design. This book introduces the reader to bondgraphs and their use on PCs. A broad variety of applications of this method in the simulation of the above systems is presented. Twenty fully worked examples complement the presentation.

Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief introduces the development and practical application of a module-oriented development framework for domain specific system-dynamic libraries (SDL approach), which can be used in the simulation of multi-causal and dynamic relationships on different levels of an industry, as an example the construction industry. Multidisciplinary research and development teams, scientists from different domains as well as practitioners can develop SDL units from varying perspectives based on this approach. For example, the explanation of the risk situation of a company, the identification and evaluation of project risks, endangered operational procedures on various functional levels, or to improve the understanding of the decision making process in detail. This book is an excellent source for researchers, programmers and practitioners. It enables the development of suitable simulation systems from the beginning and demonstrates that it is possible to connect the development of simulation models and daily work. It provides advanced-level students from different domains with a comprehensive overview and clear understanding of a new and valuable modeling technique.
